What would winning the Olympic Gold do for the Top 4, in terms of season and career?

Roger - Icing on the cake, not a big deal overall since he already has an Olympic Gold medal.

Novak - Would mean a huge deal for his country, as they have never won a Gold medal since returning under the name Serbia.

Rafa - Doesn't add much to his career but would help redeem himself from the embarrassing second round loss at Wimbledon against an unseeded player.

Andy - The next best thing for British tennis after Wimbledon, although it would put even more pressure on Andy to win a slam ending the drought.

Roger: Just adding to the list of things he has won, and OG in singles is the only big thing he doesn't have

Novak: Big for Serbia

Nadal: Redemption for losing early at Wimbledon

Murray: Winning a best of 5 final, especially against a top 3 opponent, would give him some confidence in the Majors

Its very likely Murray has to beat two of top 4 to win it this time.

hmmm.. I would like to think that winning the gold, would be a lot more important as a country achievement, rather than a individual achievement.

Fed - Golden Slam

Nadal - the potential of a double Golden Slam at some point

Djoker - the potential of a Golden Slam

Murray - great achievement on home soil

Since both Fed and Nadal won the gold in 2008, I think Nadal should focus on double and Fed on single because that's the one they are missing.

Roger: "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be playing at Wimbledon at the Olympic Games. It's just a really big deal for us to be living that Olympic spirit, right there, at the most incredible arena we have in tennis."

There will be and has been plenty of slams but who ever wins Gold at Wimbledon will have one of the greatest prizes in tennis history.

Novak: Big for Serbia (and the confidence boost he will need to get back to 2.0 form)

Nadal: Same as Fed he knows history is on the line and will want to prove himself after the early loss.

Murray: Would mean the most/ Home Crowd having just lost and being so close as the first brit in 70 something years/and part of me thinks having a singles Gold would play into his confidence against Roger in future slams...and maybe finally break that pattern as well.

I think the value for Fed is somewhat smaller than for the others.

For Rafa , he would become a two time OG gold medalist. At this point in history, the OG may mean a bit less but given the trends of top players competing, I'm sure 10 yrs from now, 2 OGs will be seen as an important achievement.

For Novak, it's more about country and continuing to put Serbia on the world map.

For Murray, it will be about finally outperforming the other 3 in an event witnessed by the world.

For Fed, he has already given Switzerland the pride of being the home of the greatest player ever and from a personal career standpoint, he really has very little left to accomplish. A singles OG would be cool but I think given his Wimby victory he might not sweat it. If he hadn't won Wimby I reckon he would have been super motivated.

Roger - Shuts up the *******s.....who can't see that there is no difference between a Singles Gold and Doubles Gold Medal when playing for your country.

Novak - He cried when he lost in Beijing 08, he shaved his head when Serbia won DC....which became the pivotal transformation for 2011. If he were to win here.....it could make his stronger again.

Rafa - To take some of that negative form away...to be in position to win a Gold Medal on all three surfaces in 2016.

Andy - Would help him even more at Wimbledon next year.....by winning something extremely signficant like Wimbledon OG. Hopefully the Murray haters in Britain will warm up....the media will be more endearing. Murray can finally cry with happiness and not dissapointment.

Tsonga- Just to ruin all your top 4 dreams :)

Roger was only talking up the singles coz he wanted to motivate himself, afterall for a guy who has won everything there is in tennis how else to he going to get the motivation from?

For Switzerland, a Gold medal is a Gold medal.

Nice rationalization!

Please listen to your demigod himself; he values the SOG significantly!

Roger: Protects his #1 ranking, add to his personal collection, further proof for GOAT.

Rafa: Out of the equation.

Agree with Novak and Murray views from OP.

If Federer wins he'd be only the second person to win all 4 majors, WTF and the olympic gold at least one time each, after Agassi that would be a big deal.

If Murray wins it all Scottish people (including me) and most of the rest of Britain won't shut up about it till he wins a grand slam and then we'll be worse :)

Since people love these silly terms, we should make one for this. The Career Platinum Slam. Yeah, that sounds impressive.

For Federer it would mean a lot as it is the only thing missing in his CV (Davis Cup too, but that's a team effort).

For Nole basically the same, although he is still missing Roland Garros, I think he will win it eventually. He has less pressure because he will probably be playing in Rio too unlike Fed.

For Murray it would mean something too, but I think a slam is his main target.

A single player can not win davis cup solely on his effort ..any country needs solid single player & solid double team to win DC.

Its not a player fault that his country does not have adequate good players to support him to win DC.

A DC win can not make any player great (e.g. Troicki) though its a good achievement to have in career.

On wikipedia its refered to as the "super slam" haha

Well done, Sports Illustrated. I guess after Rafa also got the Career Golden Slam, they needed to find a new term for Agassi.

You forgot Davis Cup.

There is no doubt that Davis Cup has a large historical significance in tennis. But being a team competition, it doesn't have much importance on Federer's legacy, which is based around being a singles performer. You can be eliminated from the competition even though you never lost a match and you can win the competition even though you never won a match.

Consider the rankings of the top 10 players from both Switzerland and Spain (in bold).

Federer (#1), Nadal (#3), Ferrer (#5), Almagro (#10), Verdasco (#16), Granollers (#20), Wawrinka (#25), López (#30), Andujar (#36), Ramos (#46), Ferrero (#56), García-López (#70), Chiudinelli (#129), Lammer (#251), Bohli (#290), Bossel (#394), Ehrat (#484), Laaksonen (#487), Sadecky (#544), Marti (#717)
