I'm bored and like both of these players so I thought we could discuss this. I think even thought they both have two grand slams Hewitt has had the better career more big titles and a longer time spent at number one. However I do think that when Safin was playing his best tennis he was a better player then Hewitt (AO 2005 Final perfect example) but unfortunatly Safin has never been able to keep that form a long span of time.

Overall my vote goes to Hewitt even though I like and enjoy Safin's game more.

Safin's career is not over yet, so this thread is premature.

What is Safin wins another GS before he retires? It took him 4.5 years between 1st and 2nd slam, so he might win another 4.5 years after the 2nd, I.E. USO 2009.

You never know.

read the title it says "So Far".

Anyways some interesting facts Hewitt leads the head to head 7-6 very close matches it looks like. Hewitt also has 26 titles compared to Safins 15.

Safin however has 5 Masters Series Shields while Hewitt only has 2, but Hewitt won the Tennis Masters Cup twice while Safin never won it...interesting.

I don't see how one could argue that Hewitt hasn't had a better career. More titles, more money, better record in the slams, much better record overall, better ranking history, etc...

The main difference as you mentioned is style points. Safin at his best was awe inspiring, and what sticks out in people's memory about his signature career wins was just how brilliant and powerful and talented he was. On the other hand, when remembering Hewitt's signature career wins what sticks out in memory is just how inept the other guy was made to look. And both players were completely dominated by Federer in his prime, but Safin managed to step up one single time and pull off a great win. As impressive as that one match was, it doesn't overcome the rest of his comparative career shortcomings.

I agree 100% with what you just said, I personally like Safin more but the edge has to go to Hewitt in this discussion.

The only thing in favor of Safin would be that he won more masters than Hewitt (5 vs 2)

Yea, and he also played in one of the best matches of all time (AO 05 semi) and destroyed sampras in USO, but hewitt also beat sampras 7-6 6-1 6-1 in the USO. Hewitt also has a better h2h 7-6. Hewitt also had that davis cup with federer where he came back and won in five, my favorite match

The silliness of this thread is getting to the point where voice of reason is no longer heard. It's No. 1 of all times vs. No. 7 of all times. Case closed.

lol at this point Fed has 13 slams and should be higher and Nadal has 6 and wait I think he has another DCUP so he ties Safin.

Hewitt might have less master shields but he made mroe runs there has more titles, won 2 different types of slams, had a more consistent prime. Safin however when he was on was far better than Hewitt but the point is who had a better career and Hewitt has outachieved Safin. 2 year end no 1s 2 Masters Cups, 2 Slams on different surfaces, 5 top 10 years to 3 top 10 years and far better record. Sorry Safin just not on enough.

You are right in your comment. Pro tennis is very dynamic and everyone is doing their best to keep up with it. This is the updated chart that I think you were referring to with more slams:

Disappointed you are missing the most important category broken rackets. That shows true power and love for the game. You have to love something to destroy it.

Hewitt has US/Wimby while Safin has US/Aus...

Masters cup - Hewitt 2, Safin 0.

Masters series - Safin 5, Hewitt 2.

500's - Hewitt 2, Safin 1

250's - Hewitt 18, Safin 7.

....but Hewitt is an *******, so Safin wins.
