Who Is the Favorite to Win the French?

I'm talking about the women, we all know Rafa is going to sweep the clay season under his rug of dominance. Anyway, who do you think is going to be the favorite? And yes, it is a bit early to be talking about it, but I'm bored in class.

My picks:
Sharapova - She seems to move a lot better on clay, and her only two tournament wins last year were on similar courts, at Rome and Roland Garros. Of course, coming in as the defending champion, she is definitely going to feel some pressure, but as long as she keeps a level head, and doesn't have a brain spasm like she did against Na in the Australian semis, I feel like she could go deep again into the tournament. She might have to take out Serena, but I feel that she might be able to on the slow clay.

Serena - Serena is on a tear these past couple months. New number 1, season final Champion, and she seems to keep getting better and better. I truly believe that if she sets her mind to it, she could win any tournament she wants. No one can stop her, unless she's injured.

Stosur - What more to say? Her game suits clay immensely. She has that super high bouncing kick serve, the major topspin forehand, and the slice that, if hit correctly, can skid and cause major problems on the clay. She took out Serena in 2010 after being down a match point, and made her way to the finals. Last year, she made the semis and lost to Errani, but she has proven that she can take out almost anyone on clay, as long as she keeps her composure. The only one I can see troubling her is Sharapova, as the topspin will set up right into Sharapova's hitting zone. However, she took Sharapova to a very tight three sets at Stuttgart last year, so it is possible.

Who do you think?

I will say Radwanska - her counter punching style will work at the French. Also, she's mentally very stable.

Li Na as my second pick - if she's focused on Tennis again.

Sharapova (30%) - She'll win by making her opponent succumb to her shrieks.

Serena (60%) - If she isn't hampered by that back injury from AO, she's still the best woman on the tour.

Stosur (5%) - High kicker or not, she'll mindbeep herself out of the tournament.

Everyone else (5%)

Whatever happened to Sharapova? I've always wondered why she only has won 4 grand slams. I remember the hype that surrounded her after the Wimbledon 2004.

Can someone enlighten me?

Queen Serena, especially if the serve is on fire, then it doesn't matter who it is on the other side. Yes, even Henin.

Really Serena?

She didn't win many French Open's in her prime. I doubt she's gonna start now. A little too old to be winning on clay at this point

Clay is for the younger cats. Not players in their 30s

The womens French is wide open and has a random winner each year. Examining why Serena hasnt won the French since 2002:

2003- Henin cheated and won.

2004- Her nemisis Capriati took her out.

2005-2008- Henin total rule at RG, no chance for others, including Serena

2009- lost super tough match to Kuznetsova where she let a 3-1, 40-15 lead in the 3rd set slip. Serena was winning the French easily had she won that one as Kuznetsova won on to easily win it from there, crushing Safina in the final. Kuznetsova is the 2nd best clay court player of the era behind Henin (or 3rd behind Serena possibly) and also tougher than anyone today. Kuznetsova is no longer a real contender.

2010- Lost to Stosur after blowing a match point in the 3rd set. Was winning it this year otherwise as she would have had a really bad Jankovic in the semis, then Schiavone in the final who I like alot, and was super happy to see her win that French, but who Serena is a nightmare matchup for.

2011- Missed due to injury.

2012- OK this is the one that is truly baffling as she should have run away with this one. I think she just put too much pressure on herself as she wanted another French so badly, and she knew that she had no real obstacles but herself this year.

If she survives the early rounds, and she should and usually lost (most of her losses are quarters or later) who is there to stop her anymore. Henin is gone, Kuznetsova is pretty much done, I had hopes her strong Australian was a resurgence but that isnt the case it seems. Stosur looks done, and Serena will be on revenge mode after losing to her in 2 different slams the last few years and come out determined to crush her, even on clay. Sharapova isnt beating Serena on any surface. Azarenka and Kvitova arent that good on clay, nor good in a matchup with Serena.

Truth is their is no firm favorite at the French, hasn't been one since Henin retired.

You can say Serena is the favorite, but would you really be surprised if she didn't win? Probably not, now if she didn't win Wimbledon that would be shocking.

We also should be waiting for the Clay Season results, obviously.

True, it wouldnt be surprising if Serena doesnt win the French. It wouldnt be surprising if any particular player doesnt win it. Whoever is the favorite probably has no more than 30% chance. It is quite wide open, but if Serena doesnt F up in the early rounds it will be hard for anyone to stop her and will take a tremendous effort, and if someone takes her out in the late rounds it sure as heck wont be Sharapova who would be probably the best chance on clay if Serena went out. Sharapova`s becomes possible favorite to win the French the moment Serena were to lose, but drops to something like 5th favorite as long as Serena is in the draw, since Maria has more chance of winning a World Science Fair than beating Serena ever again.

Yeah, well, no other player who was 31 or older has ever been ranked # 1, either, so maybe that oughta tell you something. Vegas has Serena at 5/2, Vika at 3/1, Shoulderpova at 4/1, N Li and Kvitova at 8-1, and Sam the Man at 12 to 1.

Think Serena is going out in the QF blaming an injury. Radwanska will never ever win a GS. My bet is on Sharapova.
