Wilander: Djokovic can continue playing for 10 more years, says the Serb is "smarter" than ever before

The physical shape of Novak Djokovic still seems to be at its best and despite the 34 years of age, many think that Nole can continue on the circuit for several more years.

Mats Wilander, made interesting statements about the Grand Slam fight and the number one in the world.

"When you look at Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal you think: Ok, maybe the two of them will stay another year or two in the circuit, then you see Novak and you think he can play for another ten years.
He seems more intelligent than the tennis player of the past and the margin that Nole has over others is immense. Novak is dominant despite not having the service of Pete Sampras and Roger Federer, he manages to dominate even on grass."

"He (Novak Djokovic) is smarter than before," continued Wilander. "When André Agassi started working with him in 2017, he confided in me all his surprise at seeing how little Novak leaned into the characteristics of his opponent, he placed himself in the machine world, stuck to his line, did not miss and played clean shots."

He wasn't though. The worst situation he was at the FO was when Nadal had set point for 2-1, but maybe he could have still won that one. At the AO IIRC, he had one five-setter but wasn't close to losing in the fifth, same for the final at RG against Tsitsipas. Since Wimbledon 2019 he won basically comfortably most of his slam matches, even Thiem in the AO 2020 final wasn't particularly close to winning it. To be "on the verge of crashing out" you need to be at least a break down in a set where if your opponent takes it he wins the match.

No way why should he be an exception to every other player so far in the history of the sport. Is he superhuman? Djokovic's level will drop dramatically at 38 tops like everybody else.

Yes he IS Superhuman.
Per his Dad, Djokovic is the "Son of God". Which means he is NOT human, but Superhuman.
Hence the mortal rules do NOT apply.

In other words the next gen will not produce any great players for the next 10 years.

These old guys need to shut up. They are so out of touch and just say outlandish things to stay relevant when they aren't.

He was down two sets in Melbourne to Mussetti. And down two sets in Paris Final to Tsitspas.

So yes he was very much in trouble.

He was in trouble, but not close to losing. Tsitsipas wasn't even close to winning any of the last 3 sets at RG, and Mussetti hardly won games after going 2-0.

Next gen is useless. They are just NOT good enough. It doesn't detract from Novak's greatness, but they just clearly and plainly suck.
They lack talent, work ethic, physical fitness etc. Most importantly, they are happy to NOT win slams. They are good with 2nd place.
Even Becker said that he can't believe how unambitious the next gen are and how much killer instinct they lack.

Some days I think he must be betting on how many sets a match will go, or he is waking up literally half way into a match.

Sure he can.. But he won't. Once the records are dusted he probably retires in 3 years max. There will be no reason to keep playing. Really he could have retired after the French and been Open Era GOAT if were being honest about it. The Double Career Slam sealed. WImbledon was just icing on the cake.

The only thing that will keep Nole playing is Nadal winning more and thats probably not likely to happen after next year which will probably be his last

He won exactly 1 game. Hell, he hardly won any points after going up 2-0!
That was one of the weirdest matches I've ever seen. After going 2-0 up, he just didn't bother to play anymore. Felt like a fixed match, injury or completely ran out of gas for some unknown reason.

They're all so happy getting the runners up trophy at the peak of their careers and kiss the winners rear...bunch of pathetic losers

They do their best,
but it's not enough against Novak, he is the GOAT for a reason.

I hope that's someone's bad translation of Swedish...

Even five or more years would be pushing it, but Wilander loves to push the bull.

His contemporaries are almost done and dusted....Which tennis players younger than Djokovic are capable of achieving anything great? We've seen multiple generations produce worthless talents that are either injured, mentally weak or just don't have a game that is good enough. The draught is still not over and until it does he will keep winning where it matters the most

I believe Wilander.
Djokovic still has a 94%+ win percent over everyone younger than him in slams at age 34 and everyone older to him is useless, so yes, he can play for many more years...
