WGLF FM (Gulf Radio) first aired classic rock songs in Tallahassee in 1970, the same year I graduated from Leon HS, bought a 1964 MG Midget and drove with my best friend about 150 miles to see many a great musical act a month later at the 2nd Annual Atlanta International Pop Festival in a tiny hamlet south of Macon GA. The highlight was a performance by James Marshall Hendrix that culminated with his solo guitar performance of the national anthem at midnight on July 3 as the 194th anniversary of American Independence began while he was strumming.

Invest 40 minutes of your time to see highlights of the show (sorry, no TSSB vid available but he did it as an encore after the end of this vid).:

Protection racket/protection money demaded by bullies at school is usually countered with just one high reverse roundhouse/wheel kick. . . . until, more of 'em showed up, then it's time to employ Tom Cruise's subconscious Vanilla Sky run.

Cruiseytom is not stringytom’s roll model, trying to make All The Right Moves and being a Risky Business man/boy when all he should have done was remain an Outsider or maybe try expanding his range by pedaling and Breaking Away.

Jets at Raiders: The Heidi Game.

As a big Joe Namath fan, teenage stringytom was enjoying the offensive frenzy going on from The Oakland Coliseum that day, which caused the game to run over its expected conclusion. NBC decided to drop coverage even though the game had not been decided at 7pm EST. In its place, viewers were forced to tune in for the scheduled broadcast of a made-for-TV version of the classic Heidi.

Fans everywhere erupted over dropping the coverage, which resulted in network/league policy modifications to ensure coverage would not be preempted in the future.

Long before Jaws and Star Wars Oscar awards nailed John Williams’ legacy as a musical score creator, the modest musical savant from Floral Park in Long Island created the score for the TV version of Heidi.

Williams is second only to Old Uncle Walt Disney in total amount of Oscar nominations but has only won 5 out of nearly 60 times his name has been recommended...Fiddler On The Roof, Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. and Schlindler’s List.

Came to know Jenna Elfman from the movie Looney Tunes and from her appearance on Letterman.

I am more familiar with the beautiful Ms. Elfman from her starring role as Dharma in Chuck Lorre’s first hit sitcom Dharma & Greg, about a very unconventional couple living in San Francisco. She plays a young lady raised by two 60s flower children parents and her husband Greg (Thomas Gibson) is a very WASPy yuppie lawyer. The ensemble cast were all veteran TV actors and Greg’s best buddy was played by Joel Murray, younger brother of Bill Murray.

Really funny series!

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost [1916]

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

The Claremont near Berkeley, Hotel del Coronado in San Diego, and Chateau Marmont in L.A. are also popular for stay-in-town respites.

John Belushi found The Chateau Marmont comfortable enough to qualify as a final resting place. A strange woman with the most common of names, Cathy Smith, tucked him in for his very lengthy nap.

One state north of California is the home of a hotel used by GOAT director Stanley Kubrick to shoot the exteriors for a film starring Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers and an unknown child actor named Danny Lloyd. Yes, Oregon was The Shining locale for a hotel cut off from easy contact with society once winter storms set in.

The homecoming parade sabotaged by Delta House renegades was filmed in a small town named Cottage Grove, about 25 miles away from Eugene.

For a long while, University of Oregon officials tried to disavow any association with the film but enough Eugenians insisted on giving a Duck about film history and the school now embraces their role in the film’s success.

Otis Redding recorded Sittin’ On The Dock just three days before his tragic death in a Madison WI plane crash at the age of 26. It was the first song to reach #1 on any chart posthumously.

The song was inspired by a harbor in Sausalito.

From Rolling Stone:

Still, Redding was committed to the road for the rest of that summer, including a six-night gig at Basin Street West in San Francisco in August. When rock impresario Bill Graham made him an offer to get out of downtown, Redding, a country boy at heart, was happy to spend those days on Graham’s houseboat.

It’s here where Redding began writing the song – and where the first of the myths and misconceptions about it began. Marc Myers, in his book Anatomy of a Song: The Oral History of 45 Iconic Hits that Changed Rock, R&B and Pop, mistakenly noted that Redding went to the houseboat to catch his breath right after playing Monterey. Meanwhile, the city of San Francisco recently put the lyrics on display on a pier in Brannan Street Wharf. But Redding was more than 10 miles away, at Waldo Point Harbor in Sausalito.
