To think federer was so close...

To almost losing his slam advantage vs Nadal.

Just think about it, if he lost the AO this year, he would be at 17 slams, while Rafa would be at 16 already tomorrow.

His AO win was so crucial, he took matters into his own hands and helped his legacy.

So instead of 1 slam advantage he will still have 3 now.

You think Federer himself didn't know this? Instead of letting the pressure get to him, he lived in the moment and swung freely, enabling him to enjoy his finest 30 minutes on the court at the end - as he said so himself. He knew exactly what was at stake and he knew he was capable of producing the level of tennis required to get there.

This will be Nadals 15th slam, not 16th ... Now I think he will probably win Wimbledon and definetely the USO .. so that brings him up to 17 at the end of this year .... too close for comfort ...

I think realistically come Sunday we will see Rafa lift his 15th major, but then federer either plays awful at Wimbledon or does what he normally does and play well, and now he has a new backhand he could lift number 19. I think no matter what happens, nadal can win 20 majors and I'd still prefer Rogers game and style of play, but I respect both of them, they are true champions

It was massive in terms of the GOAT debate. Fed kept Rafa at bay. Rafa should close it back down to 3 as think he will claim 15 on Sunday.

I think Wimbledon will be interesting as I think both will have their chances there this year!

Truth. You cannot call him Nad-dull. His name is topspinmonkey.
See? That's how it's done over here. That's how you insult a pro player on behalf of yer fellow fedfanboyz.

Kidding.
Mucho mas macho ... respect to Rafito. This is one competitive son of a gun, and there is nada dull about the way he is playing both offense and defense, imho.
Big re5pek to Stanley for getting himself back into a final. He will need to revisit Slanimal/Slaminal mode this Sunday in order to have a real shot against the all-time champion of claycourt tennis.

I will definitely tune in to watch it live.
Hoping for a five set war with a Finnish similar to the one in Melbourne a few months ago.
Allez!

Is this the only thing Federer fans care about, or what? He didn't even win RG yet. Wawrinka is probably the toughest opponent you can face in a slam final. And Nadal is not young anymore to handle all his attacks easily.

It has more meaning than it was 5 months ago. The difference now is 3 slams instead 1. Totally different.

Nowhere near in the bag yet.

If Wawrinka brings his SF form then Nadal could be in trouble. He hasn't played a single quality opponent yet apart from spraying ball basher Thiem.

I think Stan has a chance but it took him 5 sets to get by muzzard who has been only slightly less terrible than Djokovic this year....

Also as someone said on TV that 20 minute time frame in the AO final changed both players legacies forever. And never was there a more important time for the tennis history books than the 5th set where Nadal was up a break and had a game point FH that clipped the tape ever so slightly and sailed out. Would have been 4-2 lead. Regardless Fed still could have held serve and broke the next game as he was playing high risk tennis and was on fire. Crazy to think though he cemented his GOAT status forever. Nadal isn't winning 18. Best case is 17 and that would be a stretch and fed might just add another wimby here in a little over a month....

True but Nadal looked imperious vs mugs at Miami until Federer's attack humbled him.

Wawrinka's bombs off both wings will cause Nadal problems. Murray is always a bad match up with his persistent defence and running.

Fed/Nadal match in Miami was much closer than the scoreboard indicated(even Roger said that) and first set could have went either way. It was nothing like the beatdown at Indian Wells.

Like I said Stan can win and I won't be surprised if he does but comparing Feds performance in HC against what Stan will face on clay is completely different. Fed and Nadal have both dominated Stan over the course of their careers H2H. I expect a good match!

I'm not sure what's sadder, the fact people think he's already got the title in the bag (where were you all in January 2014?) or that the slam count seems to matter so much.
lol nothing more important than goat arguments, something I definitely take part in unfortunately even though i know better. maybe if certain fans of a certain player didnt downplay fed and scream h2h everytime, people wouldn't obsess over slams as much

True all I'm saying is I expect it to be closer than a straight sets beat down. Wawrinka has the weapons to trouble Nadal who is playing great but his defence isn't what it once was.

Can't wait for the final!

Is that why he has made 5 wimbledon finals?

i mean tbh, the last final he made was in 2011, where as with rg, it was 2014, and well we dont really know how he would have fared in 2016 because he withdrew early. i mean that's like me saying that fed could do some damage at rg (yes i realize fed's success on rg pales in comparison to rafa's success at wimbledon) as fed himself made 5 rg finals as well. nadal, post prime is certainly a lot more vulnerable on grass, especially first week, but hey i would never count him out.

I'm excited too and think it will be a great match! I like Stan so won't be AS upset if Nadal would have played, and lost to Muzzard. lol.:D

There is no doubt post 11 he has poured everything he has into clay season and has been bounced early at wimbledon or not been there. But he has bounced back and played good hardcourt tennis in the summer like in 2013 when he won the two masters 1000s and then USO.

Off topic I think Fed really messed up not playing the FO. He could have made the semis easily I think and then who knows.

Most of them were fluke. Only ones where he actually dominated were 2008 and 2010 (Weak field)
lol 5 finals a "fluke". One win against Roger who is the GOAT grass court player and was in his prime and another 5 setter against him. Don't talk about weak fields unless you want to talk about Feds first 7 slams or his head to head in slams and slam finals against Nadal and Djoker. Fed has 4 slams against those 2 players. Fed FEASTS on weak fields.....

i dont know if its necessarily pouring everything into rg, or just losing half a step and not being able to make up for his weaknesses. he was always vulnerable during the first week of grass, when you know it actually plays kind of how its supposed to, but was able to make up for it in other ways. after he hit a certain point, he is not able to and tbh i feel like some fans dont seem to understand or acknowledge that. but i definitely do agree, that the past few years are not necessarily an indication ( imean hello if anything this year is proof of that) and that rafa can play well into the second half of season if he remains aggressive (FOR THE SAKE OF MY HEART, I DONT KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT THAT LOL).

oh god noo, watching some of these clay court matches just emphasizes what a good decision it was for fed to skip out, how damn grueling for the body and even if he made it to semis, i could see him losing to stan, or someone else, and then ofc miserably to nadal.

How many finals has he been to since 2011? LOL.
