Still feeling the effects of the data breach :(

Kinda just writing this out of frustration but after all this time I am still having problems due to the sports warehouse data breach.

My info was leaked and I had thousands of dollars in fraudulent charges leading to the shut down of accounts I used frequently, including walmart. In some cases I cant reopen accounts with them now leading to inability to get basic things I need. I know there isnt much you guys can do but hopefully you can share this with Mark, Drew and other upper management that it is still a major problem for some of us.

I am an original customer of both Tennis Warehouse and Skate Warehouse, also Running warehouse and just really sad this was allowed to happen.

sucks. Data breaches seem fairly common.

Did you have your credit card info saved to your account or just from what was supposed to be a single use transaction?

Unfortunately breaches happen, but the way sports warehouse dealt with it was really poor - no direct communication from sports warehouse, just an email from a law firm that sports warehouse contracted to inform customers that there was a breach.(n)

Yes TW had my debit card info saved I believe which is how it got out.

@TW Staff still no response from you guys, guess you don't care?

I’m sure they care, but they probably have to be very careful about what they say since it could be interpreted as speaking for the company as a whole.
Also not sure what OP is looking for. It sucks. These things happen. If you’re mad (and likely rightfully so) take your business elsewhere.

We’re lucky to have this forum at all.

You could also say that TW is lucky to have loyal customers that have shopped with them since the very beginning.:unsure:

The purpose of my post is to share with TW that their data breach has had real and long-term affects for people and hopefully enact change in their system so that it doesnt happen again. Also it is to give them a real-life look into how it has hurt people, a face behind the name so they dont just look at the victims like numbers.

The data breach destroyed my ability to use walmart online (and I still cant) at a time when I was caring for a loved-one who was on hospice. This made it difficult for me to get some items such as towels and rags, bed liners etc at a time when I really needed them. I am using the forum to express to TW management that we are real people and deserved better data protection. This is how changes happen not by just accepting things in life as they are given to you as you are suggesting.

As for what Im asking of TW, maybe a simple apology? Or maybe just acknowledging that this thread exists? @TW Staff you are welcome to contact me privately as well.

Wow, I'm sorry @Shaolin. What happened to you is a major bummer, especially since you were caring for a loved one.

How long ago did this breach happen? Were you able to recover the thousands of dollars that were stolen from you? What happened to you is one of the biggest nightmares for all of us. Hopefully, you are able to make a full recovery and put this behind you as soon as possible. I wish you the best of luck.

Use PayPal or Apple/Google Pay always. They can be hacked as well, but they have more safeguards in place. And the fewer places that have your info the better

Also stop using your debit cards! That is YOUR cash. Credit is THEIR cash. Lots of consumer protection exists for credit cards but when someone steals your debit card it can take weeks or months to get your money back.

Solid advice. Consider getting a prepaid card for online transactions as well. I’ve heard of credit cards offering 1 time use card numbers as well, specifically for online ordering.

Thank you @Pheasant I appreciate that.

Yes it was certainly something I wouldn't want to experience again. Luckily I caught the charges right away so wasn't on the hook financially but it still took many hours of being on the phone and extra stress at a time when I was already at full stress capacity. At one point the fraudulent orders were coming in so fast that once one was dealt with there was another once already made. Now the main issue is not being able to use accounts I used to use becuase their solution was to delete and block all of my info, including my email address and not allowing any orders associated with that address. Just a few days ago I found something online I needed and couldn't order it because they deleted my account and blocked anything using my email.

Tennis Warehouse just sent an email regarding updated terms of use/arbitration clause, with a massive recipient list showing full names and email addresses, no bcc…nice job TW, who dropped the ball this time?(n)(n)

I just noticed this too! Another TW blunder. Now I have thousands of customers emails and others have mine as well.

@TW Staff are you going to keep ignoring this thread??

somebody at TW is feeling like that guy whose water bottle fell on djokovic. "oh FML don't look at me right now"

in all practicality, some revealed emails probably isn't the worst thing and everyone's email addresses are probably leaked on some corner of the internet already anyway. but still, it's definitely not a good look to see our info can be released just like that.

It’s because it’s like TW top brass (Drew Munster, Mark Sczbecki, Rick Kerpsack) haven’t learned a thing from the totally tactless way they handled the data breach.

This^^

One single piece of data, such as an email, without anything else is not PII (personally identifiable information). There needs to be multiple pieces which can be linked together to create some kind of risk.

Does it look bad? Sure
Does it matter? Not as much

Also, hate to be "that guy," but OP, how do you know all of your ire was caused by this data breach?
There are data breaches everyday, you likely just don't get notified or hear about them. (Home depot, target, hilton, chase, Equifax, hundreds of ATMs and gas stations) to name a few.
There are basically data breaches of some size and scale everyday.
Companies have no compulsion to reveal them, except certain regulated industries.
I understand your frustration but it seems short-sighted to lay out TW.

What was the corrective action taken? Did the intern get fired? :X3:

As if data breach was not enough, I also just noticed the 900+ other TW customers email on the list because TW failed to use Bcc.

This is very disappointing business practice and email etiquette, to put it lightly. This does not give much confidence in how one's personal data is maintained/treated. If all of you recall, after the last data breach, not even a 1yr offer of Free Credit Monitoring was handed out.

One could argue, "it's just an email, what's the big deal". Well, it's one piece of the puzzle. With just a little social engineering and Google, you could piece out many info to breach accounts. The point is it's not acceptable, even if it's just an email address leaks. I sincerely hope TW can learn from this and previous incidents.

iOS users should be using the “Hide My Email” feature for every single site that requires a login. Separating your accounts by relay addresses is another layer of protection.

this is good advice. there is 0 reason to be using debit cards in 2024. it's asking for whatever bank account you have tied to it to be hacked directly. credit cards offer you lots of protection at no additional cost to you (well, except for occasional places that charge a card fee). there are plenty of cards with $0 annual fee and at least give you some % rewards back.

and I used to be reluctant to use Apple/Google/Samsung pay as I didn't want yet another company storing my card info, but I realized they use tokenization, meaning they hide your actual CC number and use a random tokenized number instead. so essentially just one of them has your card number, and then you don't have to worry about giving out your actual card number.

Yes. The card number that’s transmitted to the card reader via Apple Pay will only work from the device it originated from. So if a merchant’s POP software automatically stores card info, which many do, and they attempt run the card number manually it will decline and notify the cardholder.

I’m sure there are ways to get around this, like anything else. But it’s just an extra layer of protection.
