While I am sure many of you are familier with Borg's rather unique statistics and records I am sure that many of you are not. So I have complied a list of some of Borg's more impressive achivements.

- Won 33 consecutive Davis Cup matches ended by retirement (all time record)
- Won 14 consecutive 5 set matches (all time record)
- 41 consecutive match wins at Wimbledon (open-era record)
- 28 consecutive match wins at the French Open ended by retirement (all time record)
- Was 20-3 in grand slam 5 set matches, which is 87% (2nd in the open-era)
- Won back to back French Open - Wimbledon titles three times (the only player ever to do so)
- Won 5 consecutive Wimbledon titles (open-era tied record)
- Won 6 French Open titles (all times record)
- Only player to win 3 or more titles at Wimbledon and the French Open
- Through 1977 he had never lost to a player younger than himself
- Grand slam match winning percentage of 89.2% (open-era record)
- Won over 41% of grand slams ever entered (open-era record)
- Youngest player ever to win a Davis Cup match at 15 years old
- Bageled his opponents (sets won 6-0) 116 times from 1973 through 1981 (a record over this length of time)
- Won 3 grand slams without losing a set (the only open-era player to win more than 1 grand slam without losing a set)
- Won 79.9% of games at the 1978 French Open and 76.8% of games at the 1980 French Open (the top 2 game winning percentages at grand slams in the open-era)
- Won 43 consecutive matches (2nd in the open-era)
- Won 46 consective matches on clay (3rd in the open-era, although had it not been for retirements he would have over 90 consecutive match wins on red clay)

I think, Mac beat Borg first indoors at Stockholm (of all places). Wasn't it 1978, when Mac hit his fiirst great run indoors in Europe.

Am I missing something here? What does this mean?

Is this a prediction?

Borg retired from several matches on red clay that he was ahead in. For example, Borg was 4-1 up in the 1st set of Hamburg in 1980 against Teltscher but then Borg retired from the match, forfitting the match. In the 1970s winning streaks were not really considered important and it was not uncommon for players to retire during matches in minor tournaments. This is different from a walk over where a player does not play a scheduled match at all.

Ah, that's right. Thigh injury suffered due to a fall at Hamburg. Borg's participation at RG was in doubt.

In regards to walkovers there is some doubt as to whether a streak of match wins counts in the case of a walkover. There is contradictory information about this.

I believe that the rule of thumb is that a walkover does not count as a victory in a winning streak total for the victor but it does count as a end to a winning streak to the loser of the match. However this is not a universially accepted rule.

In relation to Borg's clay court streak, I counted this information myself in a previous thread:

This is an 82 match streak that Borg effectivly had on European Clay (also all on red clay I belive unless any of the clay events Borg lost at in the USA were played on red clay). This streak EXCLUDES a match that Borg lost in Hamburg in 1970 were Borg retired in the 1st when he was leading 4-1. Remeber that all of Nadal's streak matches have been played on European Red clay.

N.B Match results are taken from the ATP website so there is a possibility that the information is incomplete. Please make any additions or corrections if you know of any.

82 matches-

1977: Nice, Monte Carlo WCT, Pepsi Grand Slam, Madrid, Barcelona (23 matches)

1978: Pepsi Grand Slam, Rome, Roland Garros, Bastad (20 matches)

1979: Monte Carlo, Hamburg*,Roland Garros, Bastad, Palermo (24 matches)

1980: 2 Davis Cup matches on Swedish Clay, Nice, Monte Carlo, Nations Cup** (15 matches)

*Not including match in R16 where Borg retired against Eliot Teltscher, Borg was leading 4-1 in the 1st set at the time

** Borg loses to Vilas in the semi-final

Note that Borg went on to win the FO without losing a set in the next event after the Nations Cup.

I believe Moose did a similar count from the ITF website and reached a figure of over 90 matches.

I wish Borg could have come along about 20 years later. Can you imagine him and Fed and Pete being around all at the same time? Sheer chaos!

(Tennis was pretty deep in the 70s and 80s.)

Talk about a round-robin.?!

No doubt at all.
Retirement is one thing, W.O. another.
You retire, you lost.:)
