college recruiting videos

any tips on what should be in a college recruiting video that a junior is sending to a college? what do coaches like to see?

I'm making a video for a kid who is looking to play lacrosse but also plays hockey, football, and soccer.

My plan for the video is to show a bio (physical stats) as well as awards and merits both academic and athletic. After that there's a personal statement from him saying why he's a good choice, what he can bring to a team, and what he wants to get out of college and college athletics.

The highlights follow that. Coaches are looking for a kid that they can coach to be a great player, so you need to show everything.

Went to a seminar at Quiksilver/Roxie where a women's head coach was present. He said too many kids are sending in videos of their strokes. He said most college coaches want to see match play, specifically match play where the prospective player is playing somebody better than they or their own level. At the very least, do not edit out points you happen to lose.

He said the videos he's most interested in are videos from actual tournaments rather than a practice set and that he can tell all he needs from watching 3 games.

He said if he gets a video where it appears somebody is getting fed balls and going through their strokes, he pretty much discards it right away unless they're somebody he's heard of. He also said a video where the player is playing somebody significantly worse than them is also something that is discarded.

I completely agree. I have watched and talked with college recruiters at a futures tournament. They seem to be more concerned with a player's mental and emotional health than with his or her strokes. They want to know how the person behaves on court, that's where the flaws and strengths really come out.

I don't think Stanford has the goods to hold those skills haha

It should be a video of you playing points with someone around your level. From the coaches and players I've talked to, the coaches are really looking to see if you can construct a point. they want to see if you have the ability to plan shots ahead of time, instead of simply bashing balls.

match play...no slice ups or club pro sessions.

I want to see good and bad...I'd love to see a loss to a better player to see how you're handling yourself and how you're thinking through the match.

Coach Carter said it best

We just went thru this with my daughter - She is a rising Sr. and just last week committed to play Lacrosse (over Tennis!!!) at the D1 level -
FIRST and formost is target schools YOU will be happy at! do not go for the coach, the uniforms, mascot, history...etc. Look at schools you will be happy at playing and going to class at as YOU will be there for 4 yrs (very often the coach will leave before you).

As for Video's tape a match vs a better player - maybe a tourny against a highr ranked player - or set up a match vs. a local pro or again another top jr. The coaches want to se how you play but also how you adjust and respond to pressure and different situations. DO NOT send a highlight reel - anyone can look like a superstar and the coaches will toss it.

Also create a 1 page Resume with a to the point cover letter - SELL YOURSELF - You can call all the coaches you want (they all list at minimum email on the schools website) ask them questions

Remember Coaches get tons of emails and dvd's from players and you need to stand out - both in your ability and attitude.

A financial aid package from a D3 school with a great program where you can play sooner can be alot better than no $$$ or having to walk on at the D1 level where you may not play much.

In Truth you are starting late as by now most coaches have been looking at kids since they where rising Jr.s - we started our process after my daughters freshman year at camps and tournaments targeting schools.

I played this guy, lost to him 6-1 2-6 10-6 few months back. I think hes got offers from various colleges with almost full scholarships so he must be doing something right in his video.

i played D1 tennis and was captain of my team my senior year. During my senior season I sat with my coach and watched some of his receruitment videos he received. He definately paid WAY more attention to those who sent him videos of actual matches. It's a good idea to have a match taped, and edit in stats, and academic accomplishments that stream before the match starts. Nothing gives the impression of how you play better than a tough tournament match. Make it a good one, not one you just steamroll over some chump. Some people would send in training videos, and workout videos and such. We would watch those, but coach was definately paying more attention to the tournament play.

If a coach has already came and seen you play multiple tournaments, then a workout video might be a good idea, or a video may not be necessary.

however, if he hasn't seen you play, there really is no substitute for the tournament match
