I Want A Great Damper...What Should I Get??

This is a pretty easy question to answer. I want a great damper. I use SPPP 17L strings and my racket is the Head Liquid Metal 6 (OS). What would you recommend??

If you like the “across-the-strings” kind, I like the Alpha and the Gamma blue and purple gel kind. The problem with the gamma is that it will eventually leak, that's why I like the Alpha best.

If you just want a dampener, IMO the good old #64 rubber band is still the best out there and it's what I use. ;)

^^ but I want to know what is the lightest dampner in the market ?? I use Pete Sampras dampner, and it seems kind of heavy. has anyone had this experience ??

if you want to really dampen the racquet i don't think a rubberband is enough. try the prince nxg silencer, it works well and will never fall off your racquet.

Power Pads

Another alternative is to use power pads. I used to use a dampener (cable grommet), but didn't like how it killed the feel of the string bed. With power pads, there is just enough dampening without killing the feel of the bed. Also a nice alternative if dampener weight is an issue for you.

the babo damps come off sooooo easy

the the fun ones that wilson sells actually were pretty good. my opponent/new friend gave me his chili pepper one because my babo one flew somewhere on the other side of the court (later to be found in 3rd set tiebreak) and it worked like twice as good. idk bout the others but the chili pepper one is definately my fav dampener haha.

If you like the rubberband idea, I would suggest the Gamma Shockknot. It is the same concept as the rubberband, however, it has a special shock absorbing material in it which is superior to the rubberband. It works great for me!

nothing absorbs vibrations better than a rubberband. in fact it absorbs too much for my liking and i prefer a standard dampener.

hmm i'd say rubberband coz it's not heavy and it's just as effective like those $5-20 damper. i find it to be better anyway

I like the Tecnifibre Vibraclip. It doesn't pop off easily, light weight, and does not "over" dampen.

After trying different brands and types. I decided to stick wit rubber band. Its cheap, light and it does not fall off, comes in different colors too.

For me, it depends on the racquet. I generally like a worn out(loose) Wilson W because all of my racquets tend to have small head and/or dense string pattern. I dislike dampeners that push my main strings too far apart and the big ones that take away too much feel from the racquet. If possible I would hope to play with no dampener, I've only found one string job so far that allows me to do this without the irritating ping sound.

i use a conbination of the market dampener and rubberband trick
i don't like the clinck sound from the racquet,
my prokennex frames came with factory dampeners at the 3, 9 possition, they broke off.
now i use the clear USopen (oval shape, does not fly off), dampener on the troat mains
i also use 2 rubber bands on the crosses at 3 and 9 clock possition,
haven't heard a word from my racquets since :)
i just hope the setup is legal, so i dont get called on it :)

Jam all your commercial dampeners where the sun don't shine, rubberbands are the only way to go for real tennis players.

IMO the older Yonex dampeners were the best and I still use them even though I have a few of the new ones. It's also pretty light at 2g and doesn't come off easily.

When you consider that dampeners have zero effect other than to muffle sound, go with what makes you happiest.

I've got the Spongebob dampener......I still haven't used it though.

I'm hooked on these black circle "tennis ball" dampeners that came with Wilson Ultra wrap (came in yellow too).

As much as I like the Unique Sampras O's and cable grommets, I refuse to use them on my PS85s and kPS88s as not to be poserish.

I used a rubber grommet I got from Lowe's $1.97 (pkg of 2). Alot like the Sampras O ring. Tried my new Volkl Catapult V10 V-Engine (X-1 Biphase red 55#) with and without it. I kept it on because I didn't care for the ping without. Seems to work as well as other dampers I've used.

Now why would that be poserish? I have done a comparitive test of dampeners and the Unique Sampras O-dampener is simply the best. Others look fancy but they still let string vibration though. With the O-dampener you get a uniform feel on the stringbed and as soon as the ball leaves the strings the vibration stops.

Pft, although this post was made in 2007, I still have a fine working Gamma Shockbuster from 1992...

Anything small and circular, for a more hollowed out pop sound, get a Wilson smiley face :)

If you still enjoy the slight ping, get Babolat circles or Sampras O's

We can't tell you this. IT'S ALL PERSONAL PREFERENCE. I like the Sampras dampener but a lot of people hate it. People like the rubber bands, but I hate it. You have to borrow some dampeners from people, hit around and then buy the ones you liked best.

I like the Gamma Shockbuster 1. I guess it overdampens, but I like that. The first model is definately better than the second as it doesn't "pop" as easily. It has Zorbicon gel inside.

If you have a problem with dampeners popping out (the two-string ones), just wrap some of that transparent office tape around them. Problem solved.

really? i don't know what all the fuss is about with dampers. do they really make a difference? or is just a mental thing?
