Remember what happened the last time you gals rented a car in IW and then one took it to the airport or got a ride or something and then never paid her share of the gas? Don't let it happen again.

Nah. That never happened. You are remembering things incorrectly, by quite a lot.

Wow, thanks Brittany!

I would appreciate your recommendations in the Indian Wells/Palm Desert/La Quinta area. We are staying at the Renaissance Esmerelda, and we are trying to decide whether to rent a car or not.

I will look for your tent!!

Sureshs, our group will be there M/T/W (second and third round).

Cindy,

Of course! Palm Springs is a little far away if you are staying at the Esmerelda. I have a ton of recommendations and hopefully some will meet your needs. In La Quinta, there is a great sushi restaurant, Okura Sushi, Mexican restaurant, Las Casuelas Quinta, and steakhouse, LG's Prime Steakhouse. In Palm Desert, I would recommend seafood restuarant Pacifica Seafood, the island vibe of Tommy Bahama's, and California cuisine from Cork Tree. Indian Wells is pretty small and not many restaurants. A lot of the really good restaurants are located in the hotels like Esmerelda, Miramonte, and Hyatt.

You can check out my blog from last year for more places to go:
http://blog.tenniswarehouse.com/category/bnp-paribas-open-2012/

Hope that helps! Please feel free to ask any more questions!

I will be at the Holiday Inn.

I will be driving from San Diego. When are you in SD?

Was planning to just stay one night in SD somewhere near Airport? And then head out early in the morning?...But now I'm wondering if I should check out the SD sites before driving over to IW on Fri (OR I can see sitesee on the way back).

Also, anyone have advice on how long to spend in IW and SD? I usually get kind of burned out after 4 days of watching tennis (ie: Aussie Open, US Open) - much rather be playing** The events are fun, and will definitely checkout the weekend activities.

3/12 UPDATE:

My pics are up on Flickr (didn't want to spam this board) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/demiace/tags/indianwells2013/page3/

Saw some of the TW playtesters and their demo court but unfortunately the line was a little too long when I got there (very popular attraction this year).

As for playing tennis - Got invited to fill in for some missing guys at Monteray CC - part of 4th annual "Team Tennis Championships" for a Minnesota team that needed extra 4.0 men...

It was exactly what I was looking for from this thread...(play tennis in the morning, watch more in the afternoon + at night); great people and awesome dinner* Hope they have something like this at other tourneys too :)

**Btw, I checked out La Jolla - beach just north of SD and was cool to see the seals out there on the beach.

The drive on Rt 74 (aka "Pines to Palms" Hwy was very cool - light dusting of snow like Granite said...) - recommend doing this route only in the day time though - Big Horn has a lot of twists and turns but extremely fun for spirted drive

Hello all,

May I ask if there's anyone from the Bay area that's going to the tournament? If yes can I please ask you for a ride. I will definitely pay you back to compensate. Thank you in advance!

Is anyone doing wristband pickup?

They would be shipped to/dropped of at San Francisco. Please let me know.

I wonder if I should start a separate thread requesting wristband pickup?

Hi All-

If anybody wants a pair of tickets for Wednesday March 6th Day session, shout to me- I'm arriving at 11:30pm on the 5th and there's no way I'm going to feel human enough to want to go to the tournament all day. Email me at nightandday4@gmail.com and I'm happy to let you have them so they won't go to waste.

Thanks,

Dave

The time has come. I will be in IW Thu (7th) evening till Mon (11th) morning. I have opened up my email through TW, but it does not show it. Maybe will take a few minutes.

Send me email if you want to get together, along with your phone number. I will see the email on my cell and then call you. I will have a laptop, but plan to use that only in the hotel at night.

I actually was able to book a place in Palm Spring that has 2 private tennis courts - so if any 4.0+ want to play, let me know... easiest email is VAtennis (at) gmail - or just google "tennis bargains" for contact info.

I went ahead and bought parking lot passes for all the days I'll be there. Hopefully it will be a fun, fan-friendly tourney - will try to check out corona night and all the great practice courts.

Post your plans here.

I will be there for the opening long weekend. I will be arriving Thursday March 7 afternoon and leaving Monday morning. I will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express, which does not have a tennis court.
Obviously, you must have chosen the cheapest place where you don't have to tip :D

It provides free buffet breakfast, and as I described in a Hawaii thread, I will do my best not to tip anyone who just serves me coffee enthusiastically hoping for a tip. But luckily these small places are usually self-serve.

Everyone is talking about the weather, thought I'd provide some insights as well (not much of an insight though).

I live in SF and it's Tuesday night here, and it's raining cats and dogs, garbage bins are getting blown over from house to house.

Usually, what happens up here in SF will spill over to SoCal in about a day.

Oh that will be great. Are you there just for a day?

Call me in the evening. I will be checked in by then (check in time is 3 pm)

Hey just found that the Holiday Inn has tennis courts!!!

" In between rounds of golf, enjoy the hotel's on-site shuffleboard and tennis courts."

Make me mad how tennis is an afterthought to golf

That is still unresolved, isn't it? hopefully i will come across some tournament insiders who can tell me. if i remember, the theory was that she was an asian model, or his daughter from an unknown marriage, or just a new woman in his life.

I know this has been asked a million times, but . . .

Are there any public courts in near our hotel (Esmerelda)? We will have a car.

The hotel has two courts, but they sometimes are occupied.

I did not find any public courts in the area. I also looked at a similar thread from last year. People advised to just sneak into a hotel's courts.

There are 2 courts at the park directly across the street from the entrance.

Also 6 courts a couple miles west at Civic Center Park:

Granite: Are any of these parks good for pick-up games (where you just show up or do you have to pre-arrange a match)?

A couple quick questions from a 1st timer:

Q1) Do they let you bring backpacks, cameras, a tennis racket into the facility?
Q2) There's a 50% chance of rain on Fri - how well does the facility handle rain delays?
Q3) They do not seem to be selling general admission tickets for Sat/Sun day - are Loge tix (with 30% off) the best bet? Maybe Mon/Tues are better days and less crowded?

Thanks!

Its a madhouse on sat/sun(they did sell GA tix those days, but sold out a while ago) I don't like how 'big' this tournament has gotten, it was a lot more relaxed a few years ago.
Mon/Tues is less crowded than Sat/Sun

There's a 50% chance of rain on Fri - how well does the facility handle rain delays?

there's no roof, so if it rains no play.

Not really sure about pick up games, don't live in the area, but guessing the small two court park not good and civic center park is a maybe. To be sure i'd set something up.

If they are sold out of Gen Admin, then loge with usta discount is best bet. Sat / Sun are crowded but that can be kinda fun too. Big crowd drop off for Mon / Tues and better matches too. Your preference.

Like Moose said, if it rains, no play and ticket holder basically get hosed.

Thanks guys! I'll try to get some at the box office. I bought parking pass for Sat already so will probably poke my head there just to see...

Indian Wells Credential ppl were suppose to give me a media pass, but they had a technical glitch forcing me to pay for tix

I'll definitely be there all day Monday though, and maybe do some hiking during the weekend at Joshua tree..

Wow---$50 general admission tickets still available for next Monday thru Thursday. Mens 3rd round thru the quarters.

Thu update

I reached very early, was planning to check in and take the rest of the day leisurely. But just as I parked the car, I noticed the shuttle waiting. A woman approached me to take her friend's ticket for today at half price. I did, told the hotel I would check in later, and boarded the bus.

Security accepted me as the "Carol" in the ticket and I was in. Watched Djokovic and Nico practice. Then Azzy. She is really tall in person. Watched Heather lose to someone really tall. Had lunch. Then watched Tomic beat somebody. Went into the TW tent. Then back to the practice courts. Established contact with MNPlayer from this board. Watched Francesca practice. Then Fed and Haas showed up for practice. Found rkelley from this board there.

Saw a young thin woman with her clothes almost falling off revealing everything. Turned out she was a "player guest" for Malisse. Saw him losing to somebody.

Then had enough and came back in to check in and connect to the Wifi with my Chromebook.

I had read about this, but you gotta see it in person to believe. Not talking about Fed's shots. But the average age of the crowd. It is a healthy 80.

Your kidding about the average age right? Oh wait, it is Florida; "The Elderly State". :)

Hey, all.

The gals and I are going to IW this year. We would like to go to a nice restaurant and then walk around the swanky part of Palm Springs/Indian Wells. You know, wherever tourists go where they have cute shops and lots of atmosphere and charm.

Can anyone tell me what part of town I should be considering for our evening out?

Probably downtown Palm Springs. It's not really swanky, but has lots of little nice shops and restaurants.

Went for the night session for a while last night. Saw part of the Rosol-Hewitt match, then someone who looked like Ryan Harrison practicing with his father (someone said it was his brother). Bopanna and Rampras were supposed to start practice on Court 3, but never showed up - someone said they were in the restaurant.
