Here we go, the last romp in the dirt for 2018 before we head to green and verdant pastures. Qualifying rounds have already started so the party is underway.

The reigning champ, last year’s then unseeded, Jelena Ostapenko has taken up boxing to help defend her title. She looked tough in Rome at the featherweight level, losing in the QFs. She comes in ranked 5th in the world.
Serena Williams, returns (again) to regain her dominance. She is unseeded this year, so that will mess with the draw. She could face some tough opponents early, and likely they don’t want to face her either.
Halep, oh Simona, can the number one win a grand slam? If anything, to get the haters off your back?! I have faith in you honey. Last year's finalist returns with a score to settle.
Kvitova blazes in with 4 WTA titles on the year, including 2 clay titles. She skipped Rome after back-to-back titles, so should be fresh and ready to play.
Svitolina coming off of an Italian Open title defense will be a major contender, without a doubt.
Sharapova continues her slow and steady rise since her comeback a year ago, going deep in Madrid and Rome.
Pliskova returns after assaulting a defenseless piece of furniture (it was a horrible call, agreed). Will her newfound energy translate to a RG title?
Wozniacki, the Australian Open champ, reached the QF last year, but is usually not a huge threat on clay.
The other Caroline, Garcia continues her rise. I think she could go very deep, and with the hometown crowd at her back, could also be a contender.
Venus Williams, always a threat. (edit: won a mixed dbls title in '98 and dbls in ('99, '10), but has never won the French in singles)
Muguruza hopes to lift the trophy once again, although coming off some tough losses, hopefully she can regroup.

Let’s see who else…

Kasatkina – I don’t know what to think about her yet.
Kontaveit – lost to Svitolina 4 and 4 in Rome SF. Ran into a red-hot Kvitova in Madrid and played her valiantly. There is a lot to like about this up and comer.
Stephens – we aren’t in the US and it isn’t a hard court, so… idk, prove us wrong Sloane like at the US Open!
Kerber - usually not a factor on clay, but I think she plays better when not a favorite.
Azarenka – Vika is always a threat and also still on the comeback trail. I think she can return to her former form with more match play, she is close.
Bertens – Madrid finalist; the clay master could cause some upsets.
Keys – I still have faith in you Madison. Kick some butt!

Your guess is as good as mine as to how this will play out. I have my faves but I’m not tellin’

Rooting for Halep but after last years heartbreaking loss for her I’m not sure if she can ever rise to the occasion in a final.

Hope she proves me wrong!

I think Svitolina may break through and win her first slam title. She was so good in Rome.

As much as I like Simona and root for her, she hasn’t consistently shown the killer instinct that is needed when her back is against the wall.

Petra has had a nice clay court season but I think that Roland Garros is a bridge too far.

A lot depends on the draw and wherever Serena is in the draw to determine how far she will go. She doesn’t have enough matches under her belt. I think that she can win a 2-3 matches but she will not go deep. I hope she proves me wrong.

Maria can go deep but I don’t believe she can win. Her serve is unreliable and she gets into too many 3 set matches. Her endurance over the course of a tournament will fail her (sans Meldonium) if she keep playing 3.

Mugu is like Wawrinka. She hasn’t shown anything positive during the clay season but may come out slaying since it’s a slam.

I would love for Ostapenko to defend her title. She’s very hit and miss. And her second serve is HORRIBLE! She can defend it well but if she meets a power returner (like Maria) she’s in a heap of trouble.

Sloane- No, Venus- No, Pliskova- No, Woz- No

What I am hoping...Mugu plays her way into form in the early rounds + and plays well at net. Either that or just bash through everybody, but not the medium pace into middle of the court stuff, actual ballbashing. Vamos!

What I'm also hoping for...Mladenovic to get destroyed in front of the home crowd. Forza!

Who I want to win: Masha, Ostapenko
Who I dont mind to win: Kvitova, Mugu, Svitolina
Who I dont want to win: Pliskova, Halep!

Who I think will win?

someone mentioned in above except Pliskova.

I believe if Maria can bring her game from Rome and serve from Madrid, and good draw she can do a big damage.

Allez!

I can say with more confidence who will NOT win: Serena, Sharapova, Azarenka, Ostapenko, Svitolina, Venus, Stephens, Keys.

Anyone else COULD win.

I hope Halep wins RG.She needs to win one GS at least.I think Sharapova will have good performance here but it wont be enough to win RG.Serena Williams will either make deep run or lose in the early rounds imo.

Venus has a singles title? Or do you mean doubles (she has 2 women's doubles, but last was 2010)
I thought Venus only had singles titles at Wimbledon and the USO?

Venus has never won the French Open. She made her only final there back in 2002 but lost to Little Sis Serena.

Kvitova is definitely one to watch. Comes into the French Open on a 10 match winning streak. Can beat the best on clay if in the right form (Serena-Madrid!). Hope we get GOAT Petra, would love to see her win it.

Otherwise: Pliskova, Svitolina, Muguruza, García or Stosur ;)

Imagine if we get Serena v Halep 1R with a 2R of unseeded Azarenka v the winner of that and then a 3R drawing of Sharapova! It is a possibility.

This draw will definitely be interesting to see play out. Slam champs Serena, Azarenka, Stosur and Kuznetsova unseeded. Serena and Kuzy both former French Open champs.
Former French Open finalists Stosur, Safarova and Errani will all also be unseeded.
2010 champ Schiavone could also get into the draw as a qualifier so she could face anyone.

With the exception of Halep, any one of these players could also lose in the first week.

Eeep! Sorry about that, I was reading the wrong stat. She won the Mixed Dbls in 1998 with Justin Gimelstob. Peer review works, thanks!

Halep and Kvitova favourites in my opinion, Ostapenko and Svitolina just behind because of the weak second serve, Garcia at home, Mugu in form or Pliskova also can't be discounted. Dark horses Bertens dangerous on clay, Maria looks up for it, Kasatkina has the game to do well. Williams no chance, her legs have gone, don't fancy Kerber or Woz on this service. Tournament of the year for me this, my big hope we are Williams free early.

Thinking we got lots of players that could go deep. I think Maria might make it to
the second week. I don't feel she got the endurance for all the long matches she could
face. Serena always got a chance but she is big unknown. No match play to speak of but does
she really need any ?? :)

Kvitova and Pliskova are my favorites to win this. Both playing well and peaking at the right times.

One quarter is kinda stacked already. Not that I'm expecting Serena to do well, but she plays lefty Pliskova in first round I think. Karlina is also on that side of the quarter with Mugu on the other half. So Expected matchup in that quarter Mugu and Karolina Plsikova.

And yeah, Mugu Kuznetsova first round. Mugu has great record vs her though.
