Here we go, the last romp in the dirt for 2018 before we head to green and verdant pastures. Qualifying rounds have already started so the party is underway.
The reigning champ, last year’s then unseeded, Jelena Ostapenko has taken up boxing to help defend her title. She looked tough in Rome at the featherweight level, losing in the QFs. She comes in ranked 5th in the world.
Serena Williams, returns (again) to regain her dominance. She is unseeded this year, so that will mess with the draw. She could face some tough opponents early, and likely they don’t want to face her either.
Halep, oh Simona, can the number one win a grand slam? If anything, to get the haters off your back?! I have faith in you honey. Last year's finalist returns with a score to settle.
Kvitova blazes in with 4 WTA titles on the year, including 2 clay titles. She skipped Rome after back-to-back titles, so should be fresh and ready to play.
Svitolina coming off of an Italian Open title defense will be a major contender, without a doubt.
Sharapova continues her slow and steady rise since her comeback a year ago, going deep in Madrid and Rome.
Pliskova returns after assaulting a defenseless piece of furniture (it was a horrible call, agreed). Will her newfound energy translate to a RG title?
Wozniacki, the Australian Open champ, reached the QF last year, but is usually not a huge threat on clay.
The other Caroline, Garcia continues her rise. I think she could go very deep, and with the hometown crowd at her back, could also be a contender.
Venus Williams, always a threat. (edit: won a mixed dbls title in '98 and dbls in ('99, '10), but has never won the French in singles)
Muguruza hopes to lift the trophy once again, although coming off some tough losses, hopefully she can regroup.
Let’s see who else…
Kasatkina – I don’t know what to think about her yet.
Kontaveit – lost to Svitolina 4 and 4 in Rome SF. Ran into a red-hot Kvitova in Madrid and played her valiantly. There is a lot to like about this up and comer.
Stephens – we aren’t in the US and it isn’t a hard court, so… idk, prove us wrong Sloane like at the US Open!
Kerber - usually not a factor on clay, but I think she plays better when not a favorite.
Azarenka – Vika is always a threat and also still on the comeback trail. I think she can return to her former form with more match play, she is close.
Bertens – Madrid finalist; the clay master could cause some upsets.
Keys – I still have faith in you Madison. Kick some butt!
Your guess is as good as mine as to how this will play out. I have my faves but I’m not tellin’
