Another very interesting first round encounter at the Rogers Cup should be between Guillermo Canas and Paul Henri Mathieu.

Mathieu is a very flashy shotmaker, who is often considered a bit of an underachieving type. He has been in great form lately though, reaching the round of 16 of Wimbledon, where he lost to Roddick, and winning a tournament on clay right after Wimbledon at Gstaad, over Seppi in a 3 set final.

Canas of course is a bulldog who runs down so many balls, and can hit so many without missing. He has had a great comeback year, and has been a tough out on both clay and hard courts.

Still on hard courts, I like Mathieu in 3 sets.

Going to have to go with Canas in 3. I think he is just to damn consistant for PHM, who makes alot of flashyshots but wiith an equal amount of errors.

Mathieu had made some strides this year, but he has yet to prove himself on the bigger stages. I will lean toward him in 3 sets, but then again Canas has won in Canada before so this could be a toss up.

Saw Mathieu play a practice set with Moya, and also saw Canas playing Davydenko. Mathieu played some of the most brilliant tennis I saw on the practice courts yesterday. If he plays like that, he'll win. Whether he can play like that in a real match is another question. Mentally, he's more fragile than Canas. So who knows.

Mathieu will choke just like all the other Frenchies, Canas have all his chances to win. Canas in 2.

Do you include Gasquet in that crowd, like when he "choked" against Roddick at Wimbledon coming from 2 sets down to win 8-6 in the 5th? Oh wait, it was Roddick who choked that match against the "Frenchy."

Not to burst your bubble or anything...

These guys are battleling it out there. They started their match way before ljubicic's match and Odesnik is already a set up.

Mathieu holds, and Cañas serves for the set 5-4.
40-0

Failed return of serve. Cañas wins 6-4

Canas just broke in the 1st game of the 2nd set.

Would somebody please tell Mathieu to get his serve in, and that it's ok to go down the line with his backhand, while Canas all the way in the AD court

Canas just gets every ball back. He is also playing agressively at times, stepping into the court and making powerful shots from wide out. Mostly though he is just so consistent and chasing down everything.

I can´t believe it, Cañas was 4-0 up in the 2nd. Now it´s 5-4 Mathieu, he is playing brilliant tennis right now.

Mathieu has two SP on Cañas serve.

I'm still wondering why is Willy hitting heavy topspin TO THE MIDDLE OF THE COURT!!!!

Btw, Mathieu takes the set!

Mathieu has to cool off. If he doesn't, there is not much Canas can do to stop him -- or hardly anybody else for that matter, the way he is playing.

Canas is just too one-dimensional...exactly like PONG running left and right across the baseline...no shotmaking whatsoever. PHM seems to have seen and adapted to this.

Fed must have been REALLY off to have lost to Canas twice.

Not to take anything away from how Mathieu is playing, since he really lifted his game midway through that set and started ripping some unbelievable winners, but does Canas look a bit injured to anyone? He looks like the way he is using his legs on the serve is kind of strange, and he seems to be twitching one leg between points. He doesnt look to be moving as well either.

Mathieu to me is the Sharapova of the Atp tour. Do you watch tennis ?(no offense to you).
People always said that Mathieu is one dimensionnal, sort of Sharapova like.

It is not easy to play against a PONG machine who never misses, and can run down so many tough shots, even if its offense and creatively is arguably limited. Your referring to Federer, even if it were on his worst day, losing to him twice is evidence of this. It takes someone playing really well to overcome the PONG machine, and Mathieu is doing just that right now.
