YES!!!! Wayne 'the train' Odesnik takes out Luby!

I watched this guy in DC, and he was just great...a small guy who fights hard for every single point. His match with Isner was three tiebreak sets! He gave him the hardest time until Isner got to Roddick.

OK, sorry, back to Canas...man, I would hate to see him out this early.

All this hostility, but Mathieu is a great all court player, is transition and mental game could be a lot stronger.

But I see no resemblance in his game to Mari Sharapova :confused

Mathieu don't have no variety, when he comes to the net he is ackward. He only hits the ball as hard as he can from the baseline.

Haha, second that he's such a fighter! From seeing him last week, and now this win I definitely expect to see much more from him soon! Funny how the two new Americans on the seen are "older"!

Wow, bagel in the third! Très bien, Paulo!

Odesnik and Isner deserves all the credits for proving us that American tennis is still alive.

I looked up Odesnik after watching him play del Potro and Isner. He did well in the juniors, was never at the top, and has been toiling away down in the challenger events and qualifiers. He had to go through qualifying again in Montreal, and is now through to the second round! It would be great to see him having some success, though with his stature (or lack thereof) I wonder how far he could go. He reminds me of Hewitt, only smaller.

Why, coming to the net is supposed to be a virtuous attribute by itself? If I could hit like Mathieu from the baseline, I'd camp at the baseline and go to the net to shake hands, as the saying goes. That's what Federer often does too.

That's not working for Mathieu even though he hardly beat Canas. I can't stand watching Mathieu playing his one dimensionnal game.

Odesnik has never been higher ranked than 171...I hope that changes. Guess who he may play next? He might get del Potro, who he beat in DC...or he could get Dancevic. Oh, I'm so glad I get TTC right now!!!

this is not the first time it happens something similar to cañas... i thought he was way over the choking thing.

Mathieu was down a set and down two breaks in the second, he hardly beat Canas, if Canas didn't choke you wouldn't be speaking like that.

I will concede that there was a bit of choking involved. But still, he was firing some great shots to get through the second set and steam roll the third. It isn't like Canas stopped trying, he just had no answers for how hot Mathieu got all of a sudden.

Incredible comeback by Mathieu!
He got in a roll, and crushed Cañas in the last set. Willy didn't have an answer to the frenchy's shots. Deserved the win, and risked more to get it. Kudos to him!

looks like Canas sorta rolled his ankle, he definitely was on the defence more in the third and Mathieu just ripped a lot of winners and overheads, but canas' ankle i dont think it was that bad, just fatigue because he didnt really slow down in his footwork that much i seen him run around a couple backhands,
oh well mathieu really stepped up and played really good
congrats mathieu!

Canas IS one-dimensional as one-dimensional can get. No net play, no shotmaking...just running across the baseline like PONG.

We must have watched a different match. Canas is not a choker to begin with, and I certainly didn't see any sign of choking from him today. He didn't beat himself. He was overrun by an avalanche of brilliant shotmaking and has nothing to be ashamed of. His wheels are as quick as they come, and he couldn't get to all those shots. I don't know who could. From 0-4 in the second, Mathieu moved into the twilight zone and never left. That's what I saw.

I can't believe Canas lost it, he must have suffered some injury. he just wasn't moving past 1.5 sets. With immobile player it is very obvious his opponent will hit tons of winners and will look awesome

Yeah, Cañas suffered an injury alright. It happened when PHM whooped his @$$ so I imagine it's painful now. It should be healed by the next tournament though.

Mathieu is a choker, i hope his next opponent will woop his ass out of the tournament. Leave that tournament for the ellites.

Tennis is such a momentum game, isn't it!!! Quite remarkable passage for PH from set and 0-4 in the second, but kinda sad Canas is out, because I thought maybe he'd run into fed and double-bagel him and fed would retire and get off the tv screens finally. But still a remarkable momentum match, neither one of them will ever forget it I think.

Mathieu will choke just like all the other Frenchies, Canas have all his chances to win. Canas in 2.

waow... what a win for PHM ! bravo ! :D
to do it against a fighter like cañas wasn't easy (and it's a sweet revenge from their RG gladiator match 2 years ago !).
i just saw some parts of the match... and some frightening backhands from paulo ! ;)

What do you mean WASN'T moving? Canas was running AS ALWAYS.

There is a difference between running, and getting to every ball in a perfect position, and even slightest physical problem will effect that ability of getting to the ball.

Most players will whine and quit at the slightest discomfort, they know at this level if they are not 100% there is no chance of winning.

Other players will play through and loose the match

Do you remember Roddick and Murray in Miami? Roddick was still running, seemed ok, but he quit because he felt he wasn't 100% anymore

Canas was playing o defensive at times and Paul Henri was hitting the ball very big and moving Canas around. Opening up the court for PHM.

BTW, it's hard to get into pfect postion when the opponent is killing everyball with serious power and pace.
