Eugenie Bouchard: "I love this, this is what I want to do."

Just saw an excellent interview with Eugenie Bouchard where she talked about suffering a lot of losses but still feeling her love for tennis growing stronger and stronger committing to making hard training.

I thought it was a strange pairing but she has also started heavy coaching with Andre Agassi working on new tactics (which she wasn't allowed to talk about in the interview).

So refreshing to see a young player with this much commitment and showing the desire to want to play and train as hard as is humanly possible even when it might not be "cool" or "trendy" to say so.

A lot of people on here don't like her game but I still think she could become a top 10 player.

Bouchard already was a top ten player back in 2014! I think she got to 5th in the world!

A lot of young players need some break to regroup. I hope EB just keeps rising from hereon in.

Agree. And she has had a huge amount to contend with.

The best case scenario for me is if the lawsuit with USTA is resolved extremely quickly, she spends less time with product placements, and then starts seeing the benefits of all this incredible dedications and is back at the top of the game again.

@Harry_Wild - Thanks for the correction - I forgot she got that high in rankings!

Why doesn't it look like she wants to be there when she plays?

In my opinion she always seems very pumped up and enthusiastic. She wants to be there, maybe not smiling but that's because there are too many concentrations required and she's focused in. Agassi used to be like that.

Yes i saw that too, definite change of tone.
I "stood by Genie" for 3 years (unlike all the horny/haters on the I stand by Bouchard thread who mainly hate inbetween the horns) but I am now running out of patience.
Not sure what happened in the 3rd set against Petkovic.
She can't seem to consolidate her best game at all. Her best game is still top ten, but she rarely playes it for more than a few games at a time.
Lots of problem s on the serve and ROS, it seems.
Anyways, she's still just 23, there's time, but when will some consistent improvement occur?
Remember 2014, making all those slam quarters, semis and finals, saying she was still not disappointed in herself for losing Wimb final? My god ...

Hopefully the first thing Andre did was ask her to give him her phone, then obliterate it in to 1000 pieces, and tell her to focus on being a tennis player, not the trappings of being a tennis player.

Bouchard at least had a good smile at the end of the match with Andrea Pektrovic. Good handshake like they were friends. Have not seen that in a while on either the men's or ladies matches unless it is with Rafa and RF. And Bouchard got goose egg too in the third! Maybe Aggasi is teaching good sportmanship too to Bouchard!

Did I miss something there, Agassi is working with her?

Yeah, I know. It's pretty interesting. Most likely a short term thing while Djokovic is out of the game? There is a post about it on here and @marc45 has kindly posted the details below

Bouchard inspired by Agassi training sessions

"Eugenie Bouchard is raring to go after spending time on court with men's former World No.1 Andre Agassi."

http://www.wtatennis.com/news/bouchard-inspired-agassi-training-sessions

hadn't heard either, but with Novak out...

her game does resemble his in style, if not results

Thanks for posting this. I should've included more details in my original comment.

It's quite shocking to think that she is already 23. Don't get me wrong it's very young (much younger than me).... But that time in a player's career between 18 and 23 seems to just vanish very quickly. Must be hard for anyone to feel like they made the most of it in today's game.

Even the paragon of career management, Fedr, had a few lost years. I think Genie is well on her way.

well, nice to hear someone have faith in her.
So much Genie Bashing! on these thread and in the Canadian media too. Last week there was a piece in the GLobe and Mail (our National newspaper) by a sportswriter that was massively insulting--not just to her tennis but to her person in general.

And you're right--that time did vanish quickly for Genie, and she had to eat the biggest serving of humble pie in recent memory. I just found out Bianca Andreescu (her countrywomen, but only 17!) just beat Mladenovic in DC, and may well pass Genie in the rankings if this keeps up.

I really hope she gets it together.

my wife is into Asian Horoscopes and Bouchard is born on the year of the GOAT :)
but says there has never been a consistent year of the Goat player with the best being Safin
which is saying exactly just that. There was also Blake and thats about it with a few of
them now her age they seem to be roller-coaster mentalities with the best being Konta.

Monfils beaten by a 200 ranked player could be mistaken for year of the Goat but he
is Tiger Virgo just like Tim Henman, supremely gifted but both can be similar mentally.

She is my wife and at least loves tennis albeit in a different way

To think Le Monf was saying these court suit his game and so happy cause he does well here
Like most keep hoping for Bouchard to be solid its similar in my wasted hopes for him
At least brain reprogramming will be common in the future for these younger flimsy minded gens

Agree. Canadian tennis generally gets a lot of hate on here. Tough for me as someone who loves North American tennis (even though I am not American or Canadian  )

I think a lot of people are jealous of Bouchard, so when she had all of her struggles people delighted in kicking her while she was down. She also has a very strong personality and actions which some people just can't seem to handle (the Fed Cup issues etc. etc.).

Honestly the only thing I am interested in is how she goes on the court and knowing that she is putting in the work with training. All the product placement stuff I am not a fan of but I can put that to one side and not really be that bothered with it.

I feel exactly as you do re Bouchard. People acted like the Fed cup non handshake was the end of the world--to me it was a gaffe by a very young woman who's not afraid to speak her mind. It was silly on her part, but forgivable.
I haven't seen her treat other players poorly in any other context.
I also like that she's very candid, she'll say things most other players wouldn't. She works hard, as far as I can tell.
Absolutely true re. the jealousy ... kind of pathetic.
As far as pushing product, anyone who's asked, does it.

The Canadian bashing is weird--you mean Raonic as well? Even though I personally don't find Raonic exciting to watch; I have infinite gratitude for what he did for tennis in this country. Any Yank who bashes Raonic but likes Isner or Querry is a hypocrite. LOL
The younger Canadians coming up--Shapovalov and Auger are surely going to bigger forces than Raonic. And now it looks like Andreescu might be as well (too soon to tell, at least for me.) So the hate may have only just begun!

Where are you from?

And is your name--every7--a reference to how often cells replace themselves? Just wondered ...

Agree. And yes, I was meaning Raonic lol. I know it's heresy to admit fandom for Rao on here haha.

In Denmark it is not as popular to like American style tennis but I love it, ever since seeing Sampras play indoors tournaments.

That's interesting about Raonic being eclipsed by the younger players. He may thrive being out of the spotlight a bit. I think he SHOULD win Wimbledon one year, but I also thought the same thing about Roddick

I don't think "Canadian tennis" gets a lot of hate on here. I think that Canada's 2 biggest tennis stars are "slammed" because of their own specific circumstances.

Genie is slammed because she gets an inappropriate amount of attention relative to how well she has played. Clearly it's about her looks. And while there will no doubt be some jealous people that would diss her no matter what, there is a large group of people who are saying she hasn't really played well. She doesn't seem to have worked as hard as many other tennis pros who just don't happen to look as good. Having said that, I would be naive to think that looks don't matter and that having a good looking blonde woman attracts fans to the sport. There is a reason why Genie gets the appearance fees and got the wildcards. It's a business after all. And, in the end that is really what it's about. People don't like to admit that pro tennis is a business. Genie is a business person more than she is a tennis player. That's a fact.

As for Milos, people just don't like the "servebots" and Milos isn't exactly gregarious. Again, it's a business and style and personality rule in the end. It's not always about the tennis. Unfortunately. But then again it's because we're human. Damn us!! I've always thought that people were happy to understate his abilities and not recognize his work ethic (in contrast to Genie).

Tennis fans have been fine to get behind the young teen Canadians. So, it's not a "Canada" or "North America" thing, it's a people thing.

All just my opinion.

Denmark! I spent a fair bit of time there, I have a brother there.
Great country!
Highly civilized.

Raonic hasn't been eclipsed yet, Shap and Auger aren't even in the top 100 yet (they're 18 and 16 years old) but I think they both have the potential to be better than Raonic.
Milos seems stuck these days--less good than he was a year and not improving.

It may seem specific to Milos and Genie, but I noticed the same thing on the other tennis site I used to go on.
BTW--you don't know anything is lacking in Genie's work ethic. People say that alot because she posts alot on instagram, social media whatever. Doesn't mean she doesn't practice or train. It's my understanding she does.

Milos is actually an extremely likable guy. Smarter than your average bear. As for servebots (a term I don't use) like I said--Americans are not as quick to dislike Isner or Querry--neither of whom are as good as Milos.
I think there is something to Canadian tennis getting bashed a bit. It might be different for Shap and Auger because they are looking somewhat omninous, and tennis needs something like that coming up. Way more promising than Milos ever looked, IMO.

I totally agree with your comments about Milos. I have been very irked by people dismissing how good he is and how hard he worked to get there. The guy has picked one weakness at a time to overcome and he has done an amazing job.

Regarding Genie, well, we'll just have to agree to disagree. (I actually feel sorry for her. I think she got too much fame too fast. Never a good thing.)

ETA: Just to be clear, I don't dislike Genie, she might be a fine person behind the "image", but I still think she gets given too much slack. I hope she succeeds in life. I just don't think her focus has been on tennis. And I'm a tennis fan.

Probably true about too much fame too soon.
That was true of Agassi as well (though Genie will never be a player of his caliber of course.)
Maybe that was the connection to Agassi. I know she worked with Gil Reyes, who had helped Agassi so much at one point.

But I mentioned the thing about casting doubt on her work ethic because I wondered what proof there is of that assumption. I see the assumption alot online. I even heard Genie address it, saying, (something like) just because you see me at a fashion shoot or a basketball game doesn't mean I haven't been practicing.
I'm just curious if there is anything behind the presumption ...

I know someone who worked with Genie, breifly. Was told by him, she has a very messed up family situation, not making her professional career any easier.

But by this point I expected to see some consistency from her, and it's still not happening. Baffling.
