Federer disagrees with Nadal on WTF surface

But other than that I agree with Fed. Indoors needs more attention. Since there is only one masters on it, it need something big.

I'm fine with it being an indoor event. However I want a surface different from the majors. Carpet or wood, and it should be fast or super fast. It's time for Juan Martin to win something big!

Agree with Federer. There needs to be a prime event played indoors every year. Diversity is needed.

“I know there’s an argument to have it on clay, on grass, to have it outdoors — and I did play outdoors in Houston,” Federer said. “I just feel indoors doesn’t have enough play. The indoor season is small. I believe indoors deserves a huge event, which this one is.”

I agree we should have 5th slam indoor.

But does not have to be hard courts. Grass or clay is fine.

The original idea was to have "carpet" indoor but the carpet effectively disappeared. So it could be one of 3 surfaces we have.

yes I think I agree with Fed. It needn't be the WTFs but it needs to be a prestigious event especially given surface homogenization and all that. Indoors offers a different thing with a lower bounce and flat trajectory not to mention no wind etc that gives a variation that other surfaces don't have. Happy for it to be the way it is. Unless Nadal and Djokovic are arguing essentially for the diminished status of indoor tennis as a whole? Should the slams intermittently swap surfaces? Well they may have changed in the past but not systematically to ensure parity every few years!

We have:
1 clay GS, 3 clay masters
1 grass GS, no masters
2 HC GSs (1 medium fast, 1 slow), 5 masters (2 medium fast, 1 medium, 2 slow)
1 indoor WTF, 1 masters

Keep it..it gives variation.

What about it is so illogical?.

Rotating the surfaces every year would be terrible for organizers. It's the main reason the grass season is almost non existent, because it's hard to maintain the surface.

Besides that, the truth of the matter is Nadal's suggestion is self serving, and it's not the first time he's done it. He's always hated indoor tennis, particularly HC's. He only wants it to rotate surfaces for the one year it ends up on clay and he has a much better chance to win it than he does now.

Doesn't it kind of speak for itself that a tournament held in november, is held indoors? Or do they want to move it to Australia?

If 250s (and regular clubs at that) can maintain a grass surface, then bigger tournaments sure as hell can as well.

And Fed wanting it to remain on indoor hc isn't self serving?. If it was on a surface he hated, he would want it to rotate too.

Fed is right. Nadal's alternating surface idea isn't much better then having RG on alternating surfaces.

Federer is right and Nadal is wrong.

Fed think what's best for tennis and for the fans, but Nadal only think for himself.

I just find it laughable when players make comments on how ATP should change the schedule, surface types or venues, blah, blah, blah. That's a real bad attitude. You can't change the sport to suit you because you are not bigger than tennis. OK. Maybe he is like a god in Spain (I've heard the king of Spain adores him and invites him to his parties) and maybe he thought he could influence even ATP, but I think he shouldn't keep on commenting on this issue. Once or twice, maybe it's OK, but if you keep making his kind of comments over and over again, that looks like you actually believe you are bigger than the sport itself and you want everything to be changed to suit you which is arrogance. I hope someone tells Rafa this. Actually, I think his dear uncle Tony is spoiling his nephew here, so I would blame him rather than Rafa himself.

I agree as well. If the WTF were played on clay, there would be much less incentive and motivation for any of the top guys to play Basel/Valencia and Bercy. Bercy already suffers as is sometimes. Imagine if the WTF was played immediately after on a totally different surface.

Why not rotate the slam surfaces while we're at it. That would go a long way toward boosting the number of career slam winners.

Sure TMF, Fed is a saint :)

Players have a right to speak about the excessive hc on tour.

What Nadal's camp is doing is not merely speaking out their thoughts. They actually want to influence ATP and pressure them to make changes. Tony already stated some crazy rubbish like "now it's Djokovic's and Federer's turn to get injured" or something like that. I admire he's great work with his nephew, but he is a jackass. Nadal's camp makes comments on the surface every once a week, it seems, and it's getting tiresome. Tennis has been this way for a long time and I don't know why it has to be changed because of one player in history.

The argument for WTF on a rotating surface makes no sense to me. Why not have the Grand Slam's on rotating surfaces then?

Why would you only have one event that changes its surface every year? Isn't the whole point of it being a distinct event is that it has its own specific surface and conditions?

If Federer is selfish he would request RG play on fast hard court, or he might ask Rome, MC and Madrid switch to grass.

You guys will start saying Roger is selfish, thoughtless person who is a bad role model. And he wouldn't win any of those 9 sportsmanship awards.

Roger is right on this one. But they should speed up the surface as well, in my opinion. Shame it is because I don't think it'll ever happen.

Has nadal really Said he Wants it to change surface?

I really try to like this Guy, but i just cant. He is so selfish. Just thinking of himselfnand Wants everything to change so it suits him. Why not try to adjust and take on the challenge?

His uncle always complains about something too, but nadal is worst. He has no respect.

ZERO WTF, deal with it.

agreed, good to see roger speaking about it.

it's really sad to see how they 'damaged' the indoor (carpet or hard) season, as if the regretable homogenization of playing conditions wasn't enough. :-?

I don't agree at all with Nadal on this one. If anything, the current clay season is way too long, which is one of the reasons why the grass season is so short. I don't see the point in adding a clay tournament at the end of the season just because the clay GOAT wants to turn this into his advantage. The season ends with Basel/Paris which are all indoor, explain to me the logic of following that up with a clay tournament?

Approximately 70 days and Nadal will have won the AO. No one will remember the WTF.....and when Nadal wins he will be crowned the greatest player of all time.

That AO final, in many people's eyes, including mine felt like the beggining of the end for Nadal. Everything changed that night.

Those were the good ole days.

A week prior to this poast, certain vociferous fans were predicting Nadal would win his first WTF and therefore surpass Federer. As though one WTF surpasses six.

When this did not come to pass, they quickly shifted their attention to the AO, and said that by winning a second AO he would be the GOAT.

Tragically, this did not come to pass either.

Maybe the Dark Knight and Poobah can find some South American 250, that if Nadal wins than he can be GOAT since Fed has never been there. LOL.

In majors count--yes (they are already matched with Olympic Gold in singles), but as the GOAT no, since Serena did not win the Grand Slam--the distinction which elevated Graf to that level. Similarly, Federer has more majors than Laver, but Laver proved his GOAT status by winning two Grand Slams.

I have not understood how, if Nadal wins WTF or AO, he would surpass Rod Laver's CYGS. Can someone explain that to me ?

Why is Rod Laver only relevant in Fed's GOAT case, not in Nadal's GOAT case, LOL !!!

Does Laver cease to exist whenever Nadal's name crops up :)
