French Open 2019 Power Rankings

Got this idea from a youtuber named Gil Gross. I will give my list of the top 10 favourites for the French Open and I will change it the closer it gets to the French Open. You guys can make up your own power rankings for the FO 2019 and give your opinions on mine. Here goes.

1. Rafael Nadal- Clay GOAT. Even though he is the second best player overall at the moment and Djokovic seems to have his number but on clay he is still the favourite IMO unless he struggles during the clay court season this won't change.

2. Novak Djokovic- Best player in the world right now. Favourite for every tournament, the only reason he is number two is because Rafael Nadal exists.

3. Dominic Thiem. The second best clay courter of the past couple of years. Should reach at least the semi final again.

4. Stefanos Tsitsipas. Had a great AO, did well at Barcelona last year. I expect him to continue.

5. Zverev. He is fifth because I can only see the players above beating him even on clay. He is only behind Tsitsipas because of not showing up at slams.

6. Roger Federer. Might be a grandpa but expect him to beat most players even on clay.

7. Roberto Bautista Agut. Beat Djokovic in Doha, played well in Australia, if he continues his form he could do some damage.

8. Kei Nishikori. Great on clay. But has never really played well at the French.

9. David Goffin. Should do well on the red dirt.

10. Lucas Pouille. Has started the season off well and can play well on clay.

Probably expect some changes in the next couple of months since some of these players are on the list just because of how well they started off the season. For example Pouille.

Even if Nadal struggles during the clay season he is still the favorite at RG. I've seen that play out more than once before.

True. But if he struggles during the clay court season I can't just assume he is going to show up for the FO when updating the power rankings.

I hope you're right about six. He lost to Gulbis in '14 lol. Hoping for an SF appearance.

0 chances for Federer, Nishikori, Pouille, Goffin.

Some chances for Schwartzman, as he was 2nd best player at RG last year and for Wawrinka as a former winner and finalist.

But as for now Djokovic, Nadal and Thiem together have ~97-98% and the others like 2-3% for all.

Yeah I was actually thinking about putting Schwartzman in. We'll see how he does during the clay court season. The rankings could change a lot

How does Djokovic have Nadals number on clay? Where is the proof of this?

Pretty good list. While it seems premature, others have projected winners for all of 2019 and beyond. It will be interesting to see how this list will be altered after the three clay M1000s have been played.

I would say that an RG power ranking while we are still in the hard court season is pretty pointless. I would wait until after MC to release the first version of this once we have had a chance to see everyone on clay.

IMO Thiem will not be a huge factor during this clay season. But that's only my opinion and of course considering the last 3 seasons he is one of the favorites.

Goffin also has some troubles coming back to his 2017 level so I wouldn't put him in the list. Tsonga and Monfils on the contrary seem to get back to their best so I would put them, especially considering it's the French Open.

1. Nadal
2. Thiem
3. Zverev
4. Djokovic
5. Tsitsipas
6. Khachanov
7. Wawrinka
8. Medvedev
9. Nishikori
10. Federer

The clay field is just amazing this year. So much depth and quality. Easily one of the strongest, in the past 25 years.

Aguts a fourth round man.

Nishikori gets injured

Goffin hasn't done anything for ages

Pouille lost on clay to Mischa Zverev last year. Which is kinda like losing to Schwartzman on grass

Despite this its hard to think of others to replace them in the top 10. Shows how bad the clay field is.

Coric and Schwartzman are two players who should be on this list.

At the MC, Madrid and Rome is probably 50-50 between them. At FO Nadal is the favourite over Djokovic. Probably something like 60-40 or 65-35.;)

6-1 over Djokovic at RG says otherwise.

If we take out matches involving the worst version of each player (2006 Djokovic, 2015 Nadal) it becomes 5-0 to Nadal, with only one five set match.

People are kidding themselves that Djokovic has a serious chance of beating Nadal there.

Nadz and Joe are 7-7 in their last 7+7=14 matches on clay but Nadz has RG pretty well covered. Same story in 2019?

Let's hope not.

Im glad that someone else can say it like it is. So much of Djokovic's RG success came when Nadal was either at his worst ( 2015 ), or he withdrew ( 2016 ). LOL

There is no proof that Djokovic is any match for Nadal on Chatrier. He hasn't been before now when Nadal was in even semi-decent form.

Until proven otherwise, Thiem and Zverev are currently better than Djokovic on clay. Also what the hell has Tsitsipas done to warrant such a lofty position?

Rafa deserves to be the favorite, if healthy. Beating Nadal at RG has been the toughest test in tennis.

But, I think you exaggerated here. While has won a ridiculous 11 titles to Novak's 1, and has a 6-1 head-to-head at RG, Novak has been, arguably, the second-best player there over the last 15 years. His overall record has been second best, and he has made Rafa work hard to defeat him, most notably in 2013.

1. Rafael Nadal, to be honest at the moment he is the favourite I'd say, but not by a lot.

2. Novak Djokovic, his AO final form, makes him a big candidate for winning.

3. Dominic Thiem, has only lost to champion last 3 RG.

4. Roger Federer, still a favourite to win Grand Slams.

5. Danill Medvedev, I'm not sure he is good on clay, but I think he is the next gen player with the biggest chance of winning a Grand Slam.

The 2015 win doesn't mean much, I agree.

But the 2013 epic should show it's not a foregone conclusion, especially considering Nadal has declined more than Djokovic.

I agree. Shall wait for everybody to play at least one tournament on clay.
Regardless, i think Nadal, Djokovic, Stan are likely the top players comes clay season.
Thiem's post season training seemed to have ruined him.
Nishikori is Nishikori.
Goffin is nobody at the moment.

The last hope of the Swiss is sw19. later, the federer cycle will be over.
Medvedev in clay, it will not do any harm.
the Russian is in his sauce in hardcourt, that can be clearly appreciated and could also surprise on grass.

2013 was the only time Djokovic matched prime Nadal blow for blow at the french. It was a 50/50 match on the day. One in five matches where Djokovic had a serious shot of winning.

Right now I'd give Djokovic a 20% chance in a match against Nadal there, even if Djokovic destroys Nadal at the sunshine double.

That's fair.

I'd consider 20% a serious chance though.
