Golden Era rivalry: the men´s 70 or the men´s 80?

while the general consensus is Golden Era covering the 70´s and 80´s, now it seems to me about time to define if the 70´s was better or the 80´s was better.Just in terms of tennis names and games, not in terms of popularity or incomes.

Leaving aside three guys that were equally great at both decades ( Borg and Connors. mostly 70´s players and Mc Enroe, basically 80´s player) my line up is:

Newcombe,Rosewall,Vilas,Laver,Nastase,Kodes,Ashe,Smith,Orantes,Panatta,Tanner and Gerulaitis vs Becker,Lendl,Edberg,Wilander,Kriek,Cash,Noah,Gomez,Mecir,Jarryd,Curren and Leconte. Edmondson won an AO in 76 and Teacher in 81 but I don´t rate this players as of the same quality as those mentioned above.

which one is better?

Well, my opinion is clear here. While the 80´s were exciting and great watching, the line up of the 70´s is almost unbeatable by any decade or any era.Add Roche,Gimeno,Franulovic,Gottfried,Ramirez,Pilic,Pecci,Lutz and Okker among others to the 70´s group and you, plainly and simply, what you get is the decade where tennis has been played at its utmost best, in terms of quality, class, variety, different surfaces specialists as well as characters and individuals.

Like in modern music case, even if the 80´s ( and 60´s¡¡¡) had great bands and solists, well, there is no contest.70´s will remain unmatched for centuries to come. Can anybody offer a serious and realistic counteropinion?

Not sure about the tennis case, but no way is 70s music greater than 60s or 80s, in my opinion.

IMO there are great bands in the 60´s and 80´s but the quantity of talent and creativity of the 70´s is really breathtaking.

Like in tennis, one can say the 60´s are the Pre Golden era, the 80´s the Pos Golden era and the 70´s, the Golden Era.

Let´s take the top ten players:

1970´s Borg is better than 1980´s Borg
1970´s Connors is better than 1980´s connors
1980´s Lendl is better than 1970´s Newcombe
1980´s Mac is better than 1970´s Vilas
1980´s Wilander is better than 1970´s Rosewall
1980´s Becker is better than 1970´s Smith
1970´s Ashe and 1980´s Edberg are tied up
1970´s Nastase is better than 1980´s Cash
1970´s Kodes is sbetter than 1980´s Noah
1970´s Orantes is better than 1980´s Kriek

So it is damn close, 5-4 for the 70´s but it can be even if we consider Edberg´s 80 as better than Ashe´s 70.OK I´ll concede it but the difference is in the second unit:

1970´s Panatta, Gerulaitis,Laver,Gimeno and Tanner are beter than 1980´s Gomez,Mecir,Jarryd,Curren and Leconte.

70´s Edmondson and 80´s Teacher are even

See my point? the top 20 of the 70s is better and by a mile.

I'd agree the 70's where better than the 80's but the late 80's were very strong. The early to mid 80's say 81-84 where a lull in quality. Borg basically retired in 80, playing only a handful of matches 81. Connors was winning in 83-84 as an old man playing exceptionally flat. Mac lost it in around 83-84. Lendl, Edberg, Willander, Becker, Mecire, etc games were better in the later 80's. If the early 80's could be better then I'd give it to the 80's but the 70's where stronger decade.
The other benefit of late 80's was AO went to Melbourne Park and became professional. In the 70's the AO was a great tournament because all the Australian turned up and there where a lot of top ranked Australian holding it up, but early 80's the AO quality was thin.

1980 and 1981 were great.1984 was totally Mac dominated except at Roland Garros, and just at the fifth set.1983 was a two men race with Mac taking the edge by winning the Masters with a clear victory over Wilander.Noah was pretty good that year, Connors won his last major and Lendl won no major final, and he played all of them, except at Wimbledon were he lost in the semifinals.
1982 was very entertaining. You had a great newcomer in Mats Wilander, the return of Jimmy Connors making headlines and also a big return to the top for Vilas and Gerulaitis.Lendl won everything except the big three titles (Wimbledon,Roland Garros and Flushing Meadows) and, yes, Mac had an off year, coming off his booming 1981 season but played brilliantly in the last three months.

well, Winstonslim great post gave me some ideas to bring up.The real important one is what defined Golden Era is variety and quality atop so that the whole different range of styles were played and covered by the top players, but also by those players who are close to it and gave depth and richness to the 70´s and also 80´s.

the Magnificient Seven came in 61

10 years later it went into tennis with:
Laver
Newcombe
Rosewall
Kodes
Smith
Ashe
Nastase
(Roche,Gimeno,Okker rounding up the top 10)

In 81, in the very middle of the GE we had
Borg
Mc Enroe
Connors
Lendl
Vilas
Gerulaitis
Tanner
( rounded up by Clerc,Kriek and Mayer)

and finally in 91 we got
Becker
Edberg
Sampras
Agassi
Courier
Stich
Chang
with Ivanisevic,Bruguera and Muster rounding up

which one of those three sevens is the best?
