while the general consensus is Golden Era covering the 70´s and 80´s, now it seems to me about time to define if the 70´s was better or the 80´s was better.Just in terms of tennis names and games, not in terms of popularity or incomes.
Leaving aside three guys that were equally great at both decades ( Borg and Connors. mostly 70´s players and Mc Enroe, basically 80´s player) my line up is:
Newcombe,Rosewall,Vilas,Laver,Nastase,Kodes,Ashe,Smith,Orantes,Panatta,Tanner and Gerulaitis vs Becker,Lendl,Edberg,Wilander,Kriek,Cash,Noah,Gomez,Mecir,Jarryd,Curren and Leconte. Edmondson won an AO in 76 and Teacher in 81 but I don´t rate this players as of the same quality as those mentioned above.
which one is better?
Well, my opinion is clear here. While the 80´s were exciting and great watching, the line up of the 70´s is almost unbeatable by any decade or any era.Add Roche,Gimeno,Franulovic,Gottfried,Ramirez,Pilic,Pecci,Lutz and Okker among others to the 70´s group and you, plainly and simply, what you get is the decade where tennis has been played at its utmost best, in terms of quality, class, variety, different surfaces specialists as well as characters and individuals.
Like in modern music case, even if the 80´s ( and 60´s¡¡¡) had great bands and solists, well, there is no contest.70´s will remain unmatched for centuries to come. Can anybody offer a serious and realistic counteropinion?
