How does a 4.5 guy with 2-0 wins get bumped down to 4.0 in a season of bump ups?

Been looking through people's USTA records and I cam across this guy:

He is rated 4.0C as of 2010. However, if you see his 2009 record, he was rated 4.5 and in that season, he played 2 matches in a 4.5 team, both of which he won:

How did this guy get bumped DOWN to 4.0 after winning all his 4.5 matches? Especially in a year that everybody complains about being bumped up? And guess what, as you can see, he's won every single 4.0 match so far (4-0).

There are other guys with 11-1 wins in previous seasons and still manages not to get bumped up. I wonder how the NorCal USTA rating system really works...

Both of the 4.5 matches he won were against 4.0s - and he had a 4.5 partner. I can see why the computer would call him a 4.0 based on that.

And now he is playing against 3.5 guys that could have been arbitrarily bumped up to 4.0. One guy at my club was 3.5C and lost all 6 of his matches in the 4.0 Division and was bumped up to 4.0. lol

Did you end up playing against his team?lol It looks like their a pretty deep team. Convincing team wins also, or maybe everyone else in the area sucks. Don't know.

I don't see the justification for bumping him down. If he was at the 4.5 level and didn't play any 4.0's, keep him there until he loses alot (justification for bump down). Maybe he applied for a bump down because of medical reasons.

I don't why his 2009 team page lists him as a 4.5C. It should have been 4.5s since he only played combo in 2008 and that does not count toward a computer rating.

As the others have said, he played against 4.0's that were playing up. Since he only played those two matches, he got separate dynamic ratings for each match and then it got averaged together.

Since he was really a 4.5 self-rate, the computer doesn't recognize him as a real 4.5 in 2009 so technically he wasn't bumped down but given a brand new computer rating for 2010 which happened to be in the 4.0 range as the computer thinks his 4.5 partner carried him to those two wins.

Also, looking at his 4.0 opponents this year. All were low 4.0's (guessing based on poor records) or 3.5's last year. He'll be bumped up to 4.5 next year.

Looking at the roster, I know one of his teammates, haha.

In 08, there was a guy in our district that was 5-0 at 4.5 and got bumped down to 4.0 for last year. Not surprisingly, he kept playing 4.5, joined the frontrunner 4.0 team, played 2 matches to qualify for districts, and played in the 4.0 playoffs. This was all done by the computer. The system is good, but it's not perfect, and occassionally, you get anomalies like this.

I don't know how to rate myself. I am a terrible indoors player but Outdoors I am pretty good. Only problem is if I play indoor 3.5 usta flex in winter I get killed 6-1, 6-2 all the time playing indoors. But in Summer when I play usta flex 3.5 outdoors, I usually beat these same people 6-4, 7-5. Don't know if anyone else has the same problem.

one thing to remember about the computer is that while it makes mistakes, its not as if we had people doing it that the result would be any different. Just think of the *****ing and moaning when certain people stayed at level and how they are all buddy buddy with the coordinator.

if you have questions on people and the process, contact your league coordinators and see what you learn...

in our region last year the best player from '09 at 3.0 was kept at 3.0, he beat all but one person all season including 6-7 people who were bumped to 3.5 so who knows what happens?

of course there are people I would hope wouldn't be at 3.5 this year based on some others who were bumped, but we all want to win, right?...so anyone above us must be a level higher :)

If you look at TennisLink instead of the NorCal, it appears that he moved from another state and had his computer rating transferred. The TennisLink presentation of the data kinda sucks but squint hard enough and you'll see it :)

Thanks for the heads up, I see it now. Being from Norcal, I rarely look at tennislink. It sucks compared to Norcal's frontend, haha.
