Is there a listing somewhere of grass courts in the United States?

I've been looking for that too apparently there are only a handful and they are private. I haven't heard of any real grass courts in so cal that doesn't ask for membership.

I have played on grass a few times. Once at Forest Hills during one of the challengers a few years ago, and then several times at Newport during the ATP event when I was there as an official. It's fun.

I've played "on grass" and on grass. Both are pretty good. I've only done the latter once, when I was very young, and not old enough to really appreciate it. However, I might try to get up to my great Aunt's place in RI this summer and play at the Hall of Fame. I hear those courts are sick! As for the former...;)

the easiest way to experience the grass, without breaking the bank, is to find some local tournaments that play on grass..

my buddy enters a local event annually, and they get a 'practice day' in the week prior, when he can bring a hitting partner.

I don't have enough interest to check memberships... I'd say building one of your own is probably the most expensive option.

It's also a good way to ruin your lawn and spend more time maintaining it than actually playing on it.

I play on artificial grass twice a week, and on real grass once a month. And they play NOTHING alike!

I would agree here although I've never played on real grass....artificial grass is the MAIN surface in Ireland. The thing is, theres different types. They play at different speeds. Artificial grass is more like hardcourts....at my club, we have 11 courts, 5 of them were re-surfaced about a year ago and they play REALLY SLOW and are high bouncing, like a very slow hardcourt and they are quite sandy so you can slide like a clay court! And the other 6 are an older surface and they play mediumish but the ball stays lower then the newer ones and there isnt as much sand so the ball does skid through the court a bit.

But from other members who have played on grass apparently its completely different, little to no bounce and plays really fast compared to artificial.

I've played at Queens, Roehampton, Hurlingham, Eastbourne, and about 5 other venues on grass in England. I've also played on a grass court in Rockville, Maryland, many years ago. The English have a lot of grass courts and almost NO clay courts.
