Led Zeppelin vs the field

goldenera

Semi-Pro
Led Zeppelin dominated the Blues&Hard rock&folk style ( and with indian, arabic and reggae masterpieces in the middle as well)and are considered the greatest ever band. Some other bands were challenging them, all of them excellent and we are talking about tastes here.

Led Zeppelin strength was the unit and the boldness. That made them explore and adventure to new types of music that they covered with excellence, because the amazing talent was there.Loyalty among the band memebers remains unique ( not the charlotesque stuff of DP;PF;RS;BS;who) as proven by their retirement when Bonzo died.

That translated into the addition of the 4 being even greater than the sums of their individual parts. And their talent was, one by one, God touched.

Here is their record against their main historical opponents ( of courts all matches played on grass since grass was the most current turf back then:)

Guitar:

Page could be only defeated by Hendrix, but unfortunately due to Jimmy´s death, their prime years never overlapsed. He could be beaten ocassionally by Clapton or Beck but his record against the other legendary lead guitars is as follows

10-0 vs Richards
6-4 vs Blackmore
7-3 vs Howe
7-3 vs Young
6-4 vs Van Halen
7-3 vs Iommy
9-1 vs Harrison
8-2 vs May
7-3 vs Slash
10-0 vs Mustaine
7-3 vs Towhnsend
6-4 vs Gilmour
7-3 vs Lifeson
8-2 vs Fripp
8-2 vs Allman
7-3 vs Rossington
6-4 vs Frampton

He was the soul and leader of the best ever band and that suffices to put him alone. His legendary interplay and sensibility with the guitar is amazing and while others had a better technicque, none could go on playing different solos over the same version as he did and even less had their vision and raw musical talent.

Drummer

John Bonham reinvented the drumm play and nobody has even gotten close to him, except Moon and some times Peart. No Portnoy,Jordison,Watts,Carr,Wright,Ward,White,Tayl
or,Mc Brain or Cozzy Powell

He beats them 8-2

His record against Brufford and Barker is 7-3 and 6-4 vs Paice and Carl Palmer

He never missed a beat, his strenght was legendary and could play counterbeats and off rythm entries and plays that would completely reverse the pattern and often anchored the lead guitar and the frontman, emerging as the true spiritual and physical force of LZ and the guy that saved the band whren the others where not at their prime.Just listen to him at Kashmir,Achilles last stand and Trampled Underfoot and, of course, at When the Levee breaks.Amongs others.

If Page was the soul, Bonzo was the muscle

Bass

or shall we say bassist and multinstrumentalist at once?

If that is the case, only Manzarek. Keith Emerson and Geddy Lee come close.

If not,and we only judge bass play, I only foresee Entwisthle and maybe Chris Squire as better bassist although some of JPJ bass lines are amongst the greatest in rock history. His amazing musical talent and knowledge translated into songs like No Quarter or In my Time of dying. He was also instrumental in many songs, specially acustic and he never missed, providing the template rythmics, focus and sound that made LZ so great.

His record against Lee is 5-5 but he beats Hughes 8-2 Waters 6-4, Lenny 8-2,Harris 7-3,Glover 7-3 Bruce 6-4 Mc Cartney 7-3, Deacon 7-3,Wyman 9-1 and Geezer 8-2

John Paul Jones was the real blood on Led Zeppelin musical system. The liquid that interacted with the three organs to make things work smoothly.

Lead Vocals

Well, the Blonde God of Rock has probably the most amazing vocal register anytime, or at least during his prime ( 68 to 75), after which his personnal tragedy and too much smoke and drink hurt his vocal cords. He never sounded like before but he was so smart and such a talented musician that he knew how to take advantage of it.LZ sounded harder, more methalic and less acustic because, mainly, Plant had those changes in his voice and his life and, of course, Page had his own drugs case.

But Knebbsworth 79 and Rotterdam 80 were still places when Plant, once again showed that he was a true blues and rock singer, a man who wanted to explore new ways to interpret and make music move forwards without losing an inch of his principles and music foundations.

He whipped the floor with Lennon and Jaeger but got some trouble with the likes of Mercury,Gillian and Daltrey. And only prime Marriot and prime Winwood could challenge his number one spot there. At least, in my humble opinion.

His record against the all time great lead vocalists are:

Gillian 6-4
Van Zandt 7-3
Mercury 6-4
Winwood 6-4
Marriot 6-4
Daltrey 6-4
Dio 7-3
Coverdale 7-3
Ozzy 7-3
Foggert 6-4
Scott 7-3
Tyler 7-3
Cobain 8-2
Rose 8-2
Jon Anderson 6-4
Morrison 7-3

Robert Plant was the heart of Led Zeppelin

I don´t know if there is another list. Some Pink Floyd fans are now enraged with me and will show their anti zeppism in all possible ways...
