poor ivan. seems to always come up short. this was his 8th final and 2nd in a masters series. but he's only won 3 times out of those 8 finals. in fairness, he did lose 3 times to federer. but he actually had match point against roger in one of those matches and the other was another tight 3-setter. then of course, 2 weeks ago, he squanders a 2-0 sets lead against nadal. this time, he was behind 0-2 in sets but manages to even things up. i really thought he'd do to berdych what nadal did to him. especially considering that he is more experienced that berdych.

so what do you guys think of berdych? is he the next big thing? is this his big breakthrough? remeber, he beat federer (in straight sets!) at the olympics last year and beat nadal in cincinatti this year.

Roger didn't lose to Berdych in straights. Roger hasn't lost in straight sets since being smoked by Guga at the French.

I am just happy 'cause Lube was trashtalking before this final how he was all confident and had a good record agaist Berdych. Well, guess what, it's fun to see Berdych make Lube eat his words.

Whilst Ljubicic was a little flat at the very start of this match, he wasn't given an opportunity to play much better for the first two sets. Couldn't get a bead on Berdych serve, who generally was forcing the issue time and again. No question Lube mentally stepped up in the third and fourth and tried something different, particularly on return, which worked. Classic 5 set match really and Lube tightened first in the 5th - can't remember seeing him at 0-40 on serve for a while. Good win for Berdych who when he's on doesn't appear to have much wrong with his game on any part of the court. He's quietly been moving along this year behind the Nadal, Murray noise and looks equally at home on the bigger stage. Be very interesting to see how he goes from here and would seem to have a game for all surfaces as well. Would be great if he could pull a Federer and let this big win forge his talent into a real force. A player with that sort of game should be higher than he is.

Final word for Lube - can't remember seeing someone so happy with runner up and genuinely treating success and failure the same. A model to us all.

Maybe its a good model to most us, where winning and losing does not mean much comparitively. But Ivan better be mad that lost, he definitely squandered the oppertunity to win the biggest title of his career against a less proven player. I don't think I could be happy at all, and this isn't my livlihood we are talking about (although sometimes I take it that way).

Haha i rush through sometimes becuase the professor sometimes gets his TA to walk up and down the rows to check up on what we are doing. I rather be discussing tennis than learn something that is sometimes useless, of course i listen when its useful.
