Replace Yonex Grommets

Hello all,
I've always been turned off from buying yonex frames as I like to put lead under the bumperguard - that's why I only buy unstrung racquets with unused grommets - and the grommets seems very tricky to put back because some of them are "pre-flared".

Any experience of putting back "pre-flared" Yonex grommets? Are replacement grommets "pre-flared" too?

Thx =)

I just replaced the grommets on a 2021 vcore pro 97 a couple weeks ago. After reading many horror stories about how hard it would be, and hesitating to do it, I have to say it was pretty easy. I had to cut or smush (with needlenose pliers) the existing pre-flared grommets in order to get the old ones out without drama. Putting the new set in was really very easy; I did not have to heat them up with a hair dryer or anything like that. In some places I did need to use an awl from the inside of the hoop to line up the new grommet with the inside hole in the frame (and I wouldn’t suggest trying it without an awl on-hand), but with that done the grommets slid right in much more easily than I expected.

The new grommet set did not come with any grommets pre-flared and I think that would be impossible because you’d never get them through the frame holes that way. I think you can get a tool or make a tool (search in the stringing forum) to flare them once they are seated. I’m sure that would be better, but I left mine un-flared this first time and strung it up and haven’t had any grommet splitting so far.

Thanks pjv- j was curious about this also. For reference- what other grommets have you changed in the past and how would you compare it to those racquets? I have changed head extremes, Wilson ultras, babolat Aeros. Always had to use a little hair dryer work and always an awl. I don’t enjoy changing grommets at all!

IME replacement Yonex grommets are not pre-flared. Of the various mfg’s, replacing Yonex grommets is usually not too bad.

Putting back pre-flared grommets is going to be very difficult, if not impossible in some cases. Personally, I wouldn’t bother to try.

That experience related above is the first and only time I’ve replaced grommets. Based on YT videos I watched (none of which were Yonex and many of which looked difficult), I’d say that Yonex racquets - at least the VCPs - must be among the easier ones to replace grommets on.

-as stated above, replacing grommet kits can be a PITA
-have an AWL, and use carefully
-using heat to make the grommet strips "more pliable" is a very good suggestion, for the more stubborn/tight fitting grommet kits
-changing grommet kits needs a bit of know how, but take your time
-it can be damaged if not careful
-it can be inserted wrong side up, etc...
-first word of caution, dont force it, too much
-second word of caution, "make sure you get/buy the correct grommet kit for the specific racquet model/year"

Thanks
I am very familiar with changing grommets from Head, and I wanted to be sure it was not too much of a pain in the a** with yonex
