WOW! I used to use the Sampras O on my Ozone Tour, but since I replaced the rubber for the plastic grommet and lowered the tension from 58 to 56 it simply jumped away at every single shot - terrible! How do people like Davydenko and Nadal manage to hold their dampeners? :confused: Anyway, had to play without it and listen to that annoying ping.
Now the rubberband not only stays in place, it is as good or even better than the O! Great feel on my strokes, no ping and no more flying Os! :D

I'm in!

Been a user for years, this is the best pic I have now of how I tie them.
I use a #64 and wrap it 2 or so times then tie a single knot at the bottom and tuck one hanging loop under each side of the upper wraps, this way there are no loose ends and the knot stays tight. Looks very tidy too!
My friends and customers call this the " iStringit Method "

Any recommendations for a different way to tie it on? The method in the first post is absorbing too much :/ I can't get a good feel like I do with my Tecnifibre dampener or this rubberband that came with my other racket. Yes, I know I could try to copy the style on the other racket, but I don't wanna risk losing it :/

do the Agassi, Roddick, Sharapova tie... just wrap once, single knot (tie well under the cross string) keep the knot loose... then roll the knot/band up to the cross string... forcing the knot to tighten a little and will get "smaller"... once you reach the cross, pull the band (wings?) if you need it tighter. good luck!:) (BTW Agassi's one time stringer showed me this)

Kind of depends on how tight you tie them. A typical tan/brown #64 rubber band you can get in big bags from stores like office depot can last probably 2-5 string jobs. I like to use colored bands that are slightly thicker that last quite a bit longer.

Rubber Bands all the way! I'm all about size 63 though, half an inch shorter leaves less on the tie. (I joined photobucket and TT just to be part of this club!):D

Some Questions

Questions to the people in this group:

  • What type of rubber band should I use? What thickness, brand, etc?
  • How should I tie them? I've tied them in the past, but nothing like how you tie them, can someone explain please? :)

I've got some rubber bands from mail/post/etc, would they work? They're rather thin...

look for #64 rubber bands... that's the size you want. :)

do you have a Staples office supply store in your area? they carry these bands... 100 per pack for about one US dollar (in the States).

Thank-you for the reply. I actually live in England, but there is a Staples close-by, so I'll check it out. And Rubber Bands seem sooooo much cheaper than dampeners! :shock:

+1 new convert.

$.99 for a bag that must have close to 100 #64 rubber bands at Staples. They have 2 bag sizes, I almost missed the smaller bag I bought.

Don't know if I tied it "right" but works for me; I like it. Absorbs the twang but doesn't deaden anything. I tried the Gamma Shockbuster but it was loose on my racquet. I also used a Head button style dampener that was ok, but was a little cockeyed on the strings.

I have discovered that wrapping the bottom cross that intersect the 2 middle mains provide superior sound and vibration dampening. I know its illegal but who really gives a frick.
