ELO measures your average performance; not your peak. So yeah, guys like Stan will be punished, due to his rather pedestrian .620 career winning pct. And ditto for Safin. It makes sense. Safin lost a lot of matches to people ranked several rungs below him.

If I were a betting man, I’d be afraid to bet on Safin; mainly because I have no idea if he’s going to get drunk until the wee hours of the morning before a match, or if he’ll show up in perfect shape. The guy was incredibly interesting; He played arguably two of the greatest hardcourt matches I have ever seen. But he has also lost to several opponents that Ferrer would regularly eat for lunch.

It makes sense that Safin has a low ELO, which measures your average performance.

That being said, I’d much rather have Federer face Ferrer than Safin. Ferrer didn’t have the tools to beat Fed very often very often. But Safin, if not hungover and while clicking, could beat anybody.

But yes, titles are what matter. So Safin> Ferrer. But Ferrer had the better ELO. Ferrer was far more consistent. His average level of play was higher than Safin’s. It makes sense.

And this is rather extreme example comparing Safin and Ferrer. There is another guy like Safin but has at least some passion for the game. Like Del Potro.

Delpo highest ever ELO sits at 2331 and Ferrer who is hardest worker at 2348. It sounds logical to me.

Safin and Ferrer are both abberations.

Among active players only 4 guys even reached 2200 ever.

1. Djokovic 2470
2. Murray 2347
3. Alcaraz 2239
4. Nishikori 2210

No one else ever even crossed 2200 among active players. ELO does reward consistency. So that means even Medvedev going on huge streaks is not consistent enough.

Above 2200 ELO right? @Rovesciarete

Of course! More towards 2040 I guess. The win over Novak was worth over 12 points I guess.

Among the active players only three have achieved a higher Elo peak: Djokovic with the absurd 2470,3, at amazing 2347,2 and Alcaraz edging him slightly with 2239,7. With a good run in Rotterdam he should overtake him, we will see.

I’ve never seen anything quite like Sinner in my entire life.

Nadal has always been the high watermark for insane defence for me. Young Rafa did things with the ball at end range that I never saw anyone do before or since, but now Sinner is starting to create his own unique highlights in this area, particularly on return of serve.

Some of the sticky defence he can play on the backhand side is absurd. Instead of arms he has gigantic limber squid tentacles. Try and stretch him out wide on the backhand side and he doesn’t even need to slide into an open stance backhand. He sprints out wide and does a Safin scissor kick jumping backhand and slaps a 170kph DTL winner.

This guy has broken down a previous barrier to what players were expected to be able to do in defence and has created a new standard.

Wimbeldon should be interesting for sure. As of right now, I’d put him as the #3 favorite; behind Djoker and Alcaraz. Of course, he might surprise me yet again. It will be interesting.
