structured/shaped polys playtest

Nice thread fgs, nice to see such comprehensive reviews!

Being a flatter hitter i find string shape contributes more to spin than you do. If i had to guess i would say around 15% or so? I have stopped trying shaped strings in the mains as i find
1) my flatter first serves start dumping into the net with monotonous regularity with shaped polys
2) flatter forehands start hitting the tape as well.

The best controllable spin i have gotten was from nat gut mains/prince syn duraflex crosses in a lower powered racquet that let me swing out a lot and get good RHS. So now im trying nat gut with other crosses as well. Funnily enough, i dont mind shaped polys in the crosses.

Keep up the good work!

zoolander,

thank you very much for your kind appreciation.

the best spin i do get is also from natty mains (@23kg) but with poly crosses (@21kg). but 1,30 natty only lasts me 3-3,5hrs and that is something i simply can't afford. any sponsors welcome:).

so far (after 100+ strings shaped and round ones) i can say that shaped ones do give me generally better spin and better control but i like to look at real world situations - after the first hitting session (usually 2hrs) the profile on most of the strings is worn out and you can tell no more difference in the sweetspot between what initially was a shaped string and a round one. so, towards the end of the lifetime of the string it sort of evens out. in fact, interestingly, most of the "previously" shaped ones fall behind compared to some round ones (mantis power poly or kirschbaum competition for instance) in the "final" period of their lifetime. the ones that keep their shape for a longer time (interestingly either stiffer ones to start with or triangularly twisted ones) still have more action on the ball than round ones, but there are not so many that did manage to keep their profile beyond the 2hrs-mark.

a white triangularly shaped mains which should be 1.25 but is rather tight through the grommets and a grey cross, also poly, apparently 1.20, much more true to size. the triangular shape might do for the larger dimensions while it is rather realistic that from the cross section it does fit in into the 1.25 category. being full poly i decided to string slightly lower than my usual poly/multi hybrids, but basically still in tune with what i would start a 1,25. i did 20,5kg on the mains and 20kg on the crosses - my reference set-up is 1,20 helix mains at 21,5 and (still) mcs/htmf at 21,5 too.

power / control: there is good power coming with this hybrid, but this one definitely goes at the expense of control. the launchangle is somewhat higher than what i am used to, so in order to keep the ball in i just went for some additional spin. nevertheless, i was not able to consistently play shortangled crosses and slices still tended to float behind the baseline. stringing higher might be recommended, but that is an issue i will adress a little bit later.
grade: 3/5

feel: i was missing any form of crispiness, of freshness. this stringbed played mushy on the verge of dull. due to the higher launchangle my attempts to play some droppers ended up with some nice sitters to be crushed by my hitting partner. i've played worse nevertheless.
grade: 3/5

spin: it was somehow like a deja vu, reminding me of the tecnifibre black code 4s experience. this shape should have been supposed to bite the ball but not much really happened. it is a spinny combo but in my opinion just slightly higher average. interestingly it seems to be the mains - another point i'll come back later.
grade: 4/5

comfort: i don't think there should be any issues even with players with more tender joints.
grade: 4/5

tension maintenance / durability: tension maintenance was fine but durability was close to none. the (thicker) mains broke (in the sweetspot not on a shank!!!!) after slightly more than one hour of hitting, and that included warm-up too. this was one of the fastest breaking polys i have ever played, obviously with a nominal diameter of 1.25!
grade: 1/5

overall: 15/25

stringing higher - my experience so far, without exception, has been that increasing tension drives down durability. so, maybe if i did string higher the feel would have been crispier, livelier, whatever, but then i would be needing two fresh sticks at least for every practice session, and this is absurd.

spin: the mains broke after roughly one hour but as the crosses looked almost in pristine condition (usually they are thinning out - but i was following this matter lately and they thin out from ball contact and not from mains sliding over them, as the thinning occurs on top of the weave and not at the intersection with the mains) i decided to give them another go and strung them up with another set of mains. nothing spectacular this time, plain round mantis power poly 1,25, keeping the same tension for the crosses. i almost felt "like home" - the ball was spinny, controllable and quite touchy for a full-poly set-up - and it lasted 3,5hrs!

tecnifibre black code 1.28

having rather recently playtested the black code 4s 1,25 and quite a while ago the regular 1,24, i decided to give the regular black code 1,28 a run for the money too, hoping to find in the slightly thicker diameter a little bit of the missed crispiness of the other two.

power / control: it is no surprise that in this respect there is a solid ratio of the two apparently opposing aspects and indeed i felt a little bit better "connected" to my shots than with the "slimmer" sisters. i could easily go for putaways and pretty often land them in and i also got sufficinet support on shots on the run to direct them quite deep into the opponents court. while the performance is really solid, there are other strings in the same price bracket that do go a step further in this aspect of the game.
grade: 4/5

feel: while i was better able to play touch shots with this one than with the recently tested 4s version, and slices did indeed come pretty rock-solid, the black code 1,28 still leaves me wanting by quite a margin. with the helix or tour bite or even the lethal 5 i feel i can play touch shots somehow more "naturally", this one makes me "work" - i simply can't play them intuitively but have to "prepare" them.
grade: 3/5

spin: very good performance in this department and in my opinion in the same league as the "much praised" 4s, which, again in my opinion, means that there are some which i feel get more action on the ball.
grade: 4/5

comfort: i got along well with it but then i am not a very sensitive kind. i still would not recommend this for players with a history of any -itis.
grade: 4/5

durability / tension maintenance: durability was in my usual range, namely 4 hours and i did not notice any drop in tension over this time span.
grade: 4/5

overall: 19/25
