The Sound of Beauty (PS 85 6.0)

Well today I hit with my ps 6.0 85 for the first time ever. I've hit with a k90 and a tour 90 and my babolat PD which Im retiring. Nothing compared to a true 6.0 85. One of the greatest things about the racquet is the SOUND it makes when you hit a good shot. Its like a muffled smack , which sounds so clean. I don't know why but the sound alone made me like the racquet even more. Anyone else appreciate the sound of ps 6.0 as much as I do. I don't know why I didn't switch to this stick sooner. It is one of the best sticks I have ever hit compared to my old babolat PD and the k90 which I demoed. It honestly tells you right away whether you hit a good shot or not. Its like you are hitting the ball with your hand.

So you're moving from a PD to a PS85? That's a pretty big change. Anyway, welcome to the PS85 club! Was there something in particular you didn't like about the K90?

Sure is. My strokes have always been clean even when I started learning tennis. So the switch wasn't that big of a deal. I just had to increase my swing from a compact one to a longer one. I got over the weight issue in 1 to two weeks so now it just feels like any old racquet. I hit with a lot of topspin. Whenever I hit with my pure drive I never felt like I did things on purpose. I didn't really have feel so it felt like I was blocking a shot every time rather than hitting. Then the k90 came out and I gave it a demo even though everyone on this board says smaller headed racquets are only for pros which I think is complete ******** and found out what "feel" actually was and decided to do some research and find out which racquet had the best feel and got a ps 85 6.0 instead of the k90. What I didnt like about the k90 was that it was less demanding than a prostaff 85 and I wanted to have a racquet that was really nit picky that way it would perfect my strokes eve more. Personally I think the ps85 have almost the same feel as a k90 though. And for all you beginner players I think you should definitely experiment with smaller head sizes it may make you suck at first but hey you aren't very good right now anyways so you really have nothing to lose. They'll only make you better in the long run. The sound of a ps 6.0 is just beautiful though. One of my favorite things about it.

Hi Sean. I just played with a friend's PS 85 and my experience was similar to yours. I was surprised that the small head did not result in mishits, and overall did not affect the way I played. The racket was so smooth and cut through air so easily. Like so many posters have commented, the racket actually felt light even though it's weight is quite considearble cf other rackets on the market. The feel was great and overall I played a good match with it. This old venerable stick is still one of the best rackets available.

LOL @ WhiteSoxs and Mr. Sean. i don't know if the selling point for a racket is it's sound for me, but I do like the sound it makes.

The 6.0 wont automatically perfect your strokes more than the k90, that's just silly. YOU are the one who need to focus on your mistakes and practice no matter what racquet you use.

Just my 2 cents.

Out of Curiosity. How does one go from using a "bazooka" with no feel to a raquet that is 15sq inches less and hits like a board. There is no way you made a smooth transition. Sorry.

Honestly it wasn't that big of a change. Sorry if you are hating, but it wasn't a big deal. I sacrificed a little bit of power, But I'm more of a control player so it was even better. I was sore for a week but I adjusted to it and now I the weight doesn't bother me at all. I also changed my swing a little bit form a less compact one to a longer more fluent one.

Yeah, the switch isn't a big deal if your an athlete. In fact it would be easier to hit with the PS 85 than the babolat from the beginning since I believe its more of a players stick.

Yup , sound & feel . It does sound sweet - cannot be described in mere words .

I, too, have switched from the PD to the PS85 (albeit with a PS 6.0 95 inbetween). I actually agree with most of you said, especially this:
"Whenever I hit with my pure drive I never felt like I did things on purpose"

Thats right on with how I felt. With the pure drive, it felt like you were just hitting balls and hoping they'd go where you want. But with the PS85, its feels like you have to purposefully drive the ball there. I don't think my explanation helps at all, but I agree.

Also, I always used dampeners with the Pure Drive. With the Pro Staff, theres no need. Its the first racket I've use where I prefer not having a dampener

My experience here: I learned tennis a 14 with a Dunlop Maxply (wood). Yes you guessed right I'm old! I played 4 years, then stopped for 10 yrs then restarted at 35, stopped at 40, and restarted at 44. All these times, I was changing rackets because new technology was coming on and old rackets were no more available. Meanwhile the game changed. I was taught flat shots, dead in the center, pure sweet spot contact points. Continental grips etc... The newer racquets are designed for Top spins and eastrn, western semi western grips. etc... I strugled finding the right gear and adapting my game. I recently by accident discovered the Ncode 90 Tour. Revelation!!! Was going closer to the old feeling. I am not a strong hitter and certainly do not break strings. But I have long swing and hit basicaly flat, thoug I learned the top spin! I tried the PS85 because of all what I read in reviews, and thought smaller size is better for me, though I had reservation about the weight and the head size. Well, I must admit I reached my state of tennis nirvana when I first hit with it. And all the myth about being a heavy racket is non sense. In fact ( and for my taste of course), if it could be 50 grams heavier, aroud 400 grs, that would be ideal. Personaly I find it light, and feels much lighter than an Ncode 90 tour. (all things equal - strings, grips, dampers). But for me this is it. And certainly you won't learn or improve anyting in your game with it. But if you know well the fundamentals of tennis strokes you will enjoy playing tennis and will reconfirm your knowledge every time you hit with it. They say life is a circle. You end up where you started. As for my tennis racket, I reached at this point. No more experiments. - PS 85

i can relate to all you ps85 lovers out there. for me, i started playing with the ps85 as a hand me down racquet. i had no idea the history behind the racquet. i just thought it was a crappy old stick. but as i got better, i soon came to appreciate the feel and control, not to mention the sound this stick creates. i absolutely love this stick. i've tried to switch numerous times, thinking newer technology would be better. well, 20 racquet demos (purchases  all that money wasted) later, i still hit with the ps85.

remember, those who think this stick has too small of a head, keep in mind that a tennis ball is relatively small compared to the size of the raquet head. you only need to make contact to the same surface area the size of the tennis ball. plus, kids and grannies used to use wood racquets back in the days with head sizes of 75 sq.in.

i love the PS 6.0 85. it's the best serving racquet, period. i am just 5'9" and weigh 140, but i served so well with this racquet, my opponents were taken by real surprise. beautiful control, and great pace if you swing loose and smooth.

sadly, after a period of use, my shoulder started to hurt and i couldn't serve any more. i guess i needed to use the gym and work out a bit before using this racquet. wonder of wonders, i switched to a wooden racquet (dunlop maxply) and my serve is still very good, and my shoulder doesn't hurt as much anymore. i always carry 2 racquets with me: the maxply mcenroe (wood) and the puma boris becker super. i use the wooden one on my serve, and use the puma while receiving. the puma is not the best serving racquet (hats off to becker for generating that pace off the racquet) while returning serves with a wood racquet is like threading the needle.
