Tourna Tuff XL Overgrip Playtest

The application period is closed. The remaining playtesters will be notified by Wednesday. If you do not get notified, keep applying for future playtests!

Review due by August 24

Playtesters must post a review by the deadline to remain in good standing for future playtests

Include the following in your review:

Do you typically use an overgrip? (if yes, which one do you use?)
Was the test grip easy to install (any wrinkles during install, did the grip lay down nicely?)
Comment on the level of sweat absorption and hand slippage (if you currently use an overgrip, please let us know if the test overgrip performed better, worse or the same in these areas)
Longevity of overgrip (did it hold up well over multiple sessions of play?)
List any additional thoughts, including any comparisons to standard Tourna grip (optional)

BONUS ROUND

We are doing podcast with Tourna about this overgrip in particular and Tourna overgrips in general. Do you have any questions for Tourna? We will pick some of your questions for the podcast.

Lets see...
  • I know the 'original Tourna XL' was actually extra-wide, not long. Is the Tourna Tuff XL also wider? Or is is truly extra-long?
  • A nice feature of original Tourna was you could actually flip it over & use the other side. Will Tuff also be 'flipable'?
EDIT: according to the TW site, it is:
As with other Tourna overgrips, Tourna Tuff XL can be gripped on either side.
  • People here (including myself) have noticed that different colors seem to have better/worse longevity. Is this all in our heads, or does the dye actually affect absorption/tackiness?

BONUS ROUND Q:
1. RE Tourna XL overgrips, are these longer than regular overgrips? An extended OG would be extremely beneficial for those with extended grips and 2HBHs.
2. What are the various types of overgrips / intended user groups?

I definitely use an overgrip! Grip is such an important part of the game - it is your only contact with the racquet. A strong grip can improve every aspect of your game and make your shots more reliable, consistent, and effective. In my case a fresh overgrip always contributes to this. Grip / forearm exercises are also key parts of this.

An overgrip that performs well will allow you to have a looser, more relaxed, grip.

Questions for Tourna:

1. Since high school, I used both sides of Tourna grip. When one side got too dirty to use, I just flipped it and worked fine. I wonder if that was by design because Tourna wasn’t as durable.

2. Can the Tacky Tourna grip be made to be as absorbent as the regular version? I like the feel of the Tourna Tac grips, but they become slippery when my hands get too sweaty.

3. I’ve seen some Tourna grips fall apart & disintegrated while playing. The user claimed they were opened a long time ago and probably dried out. Just wondering if there are ways to revive the older, dried out grips.

Not a huge hand sweater and don't love Tourna so won't be signing up but curious for how this turns out/people's thoughts since one of my good friends and hitting partners sweats like a fountain lol

Well the sweat is gonna run down you arm and onto your racquet (even with a sweat band). Tourna seems to perform the best even a little wet. Wilson pro OG also works well but not for extreme wet conditions.

I have been considering buying some of these since the regular Tourna overgrips just don't last very long. Oftentimes they're done after 2 good hitting seasons. Can't wait to hear the feedback compared to the original and hopefully I'll get chosen!

That was quick ! Thanks TW and Tourna for the delivery of the XL Tourna Tuff. These overgrips will be put to the test as a heatwave engulfs most of the US. If they hold up these sweaty hands - they're doing a great job.

As @djNEiGht mentioned I also had a buddy who lost his racquet...slipped out of his hand and hit a post resulting in the total loss of a beautiful ProStaff 97. I generally don't have that issue, but a fresh grip always helps me to play better!

Guessing XL = Extra Life or Extra Long Life or Extra Long Lasting.

Not comoletely sure, but I believe Tourna had a patent on its light blue color for its overgrips and sued Gamma for copying their light blue color for their own overgrips, I think Gamma had to go darker in blue to avoid problem.

I don’t believe Gamma owns Tourna.
Wow, did not know that. I thought there was some relation or partnership at some point, but I could have been wrong :)

Is Tourna owned by Gamma?
Totally separate companies - one in Pittsburgh, the other in Alpharetta, GA. They are both American brands with overlapping product categories, but there is only one Tourna Grip, especially when you consider history/pro tour. Also - and this is more of general point for the thread - lawsuits are more common than you'd think. The entire industry is patent driven by necessity - they all try to copy each other.

Tourna Tuff XL feels much thicker than the regular version. The feel is soft, cushioned and dry bit grippy. Huge improvement in feel over the regular version. Hope it doesn’t get slippery. Will report after a few hours of playtesting.
Well said. I've been using it for a few weeks and agree that it feels thicker/softer than regular TG, and you nailed it with the dry but grippy part. I'm loving the feel.

I prefer the regular Tourna over the Tourna Tough for heavy sweating.

If you're not a supersweater, you may like the TT.

It does get slightly slippery, from my experience. I went back immediately to the standard Tourna.

My hands don't sweat so I use Tourna Megatac in cold weather.
I have a three pack of XL Tuff in my captains bag for an emergency at a match
HEAD at one point license Tourna Grip back when Andre started endorsing their frames as I recall.

Why don't they taper the beginning or end of the grips? Still only use the traditional tourna grip xl but wonder why no taper...

-sorry i missed this playtest, but ill be trying it when it comes to my store
-ive been back to using tourna grips again, now that the summer is here
-ive only been able to use 1x side of the tourna grips successfully
-the other side, the reverse side (once flipped) is very thin and/or dull
-so this TOURNA-TUFF XL grip/s seem to be thicker versions of their original
-as stated in the package, either side can be used

-in any event, it seems like a good idea
-cant wait to read the reviews and/or test myself!

I got selected... looking forward to it in the 90 degrees high humidity..
Perfect timing as I need new overgrips..
I am always concerned that my rackets will go flying this time of year.. honestly that's one of the reasons why I am selling my few Yonex rackets.. I have a very hard time with their zero butt and grip bevel feel.

You ever try building up the butt cap?
