Unless Novak wins Wimbledon, Murray still #1 on Monday despite no Slam finals

Viewed another way, the fact that Murray may still hold the #1 ranking come Monday (if Djokovic does not clinch the title) is a tribute to the huge number of ranking points he built up last year by winning tournament after tournament. It's taken just a handful of top players THIS long to come within striking distance of over-taking him despite the poor form he has displayed this year!

Rafa will be very close to Murray when the new ranking is released on Monday. Murray's days as #1 are definitely numbered, we'll probably have a new #1 by the US Open if not before. In Murray's case, it was a pretty pathetic run as #1, but I have to wonder if becoming #1 added more pressure that he simply couldn't handle? Nadal may have been #1 before, yet I never got the feeling he enjoyed the extra pressure that comes with the spot. Federer/Djokovic never really seemed bothered by that pressure, being #1 was something they enjoyed and took pride in.

Well it's partly because Federer and Nadal didn't play at the end of last year and then took out the most of points in 2017. That puts the bar rather low. If Federer wins Wimbledon and Djokovic is semifinalist, Federer will be "only" 4th, but only playing 8 tournaments !

As already said before, Murray #1 is a joke, and only because of the ranking system where Murray accumulated point in 2nd part of last year when all the top guns were out with injury! That's it, simple enough. And I am tired of hearing BBC commentators claiming Murry is the best player in the world..., please give me a break.

i'm wondering if it's a 'record' for a #1 player...

any other #1 without a slam final in the previous 12 months ?...

Ferrero, Safin maybe - I am sure there are plenty of names. The big 4 just pushed the bar very high. In Andy defense he had one bad Slam tournament - AO and thats mainly because the fact that he lost to a unseeded player. RG was great fight from him and Wimbledon was cutted by the unjury. He would come back stronger. If he wins Canada/Cincy + Us Open he could be number 1 after it.

Murray is number 1 best goaty player ever! Old man Fed is very lucky he is injured & allowed him a chance at one last pity slam.

when they were #1, safin had the 2001 USO1 and ferrero had RG 2003.
kafelnikov had the 1999 AO, moya had RG 1998... even rios had the 1998 AO final.

i'm still searching...... but i think andy pushed the bar at a new level !

I thought that you are asking after they became number 1, in that case probably no one else till the early days of the rankings - Nastase maybe

Regardless of the official ATP rankings, if Fed wins Wimbledon he's the de facto #1 since he holds two majors. I don't expect Nadal to transform himself into some HC wonder this summer and Roger has no points to defend until January, 2018. If he wins Wimbledon, Fed will almost certainly end up #1 again at some point this year.

I don't recall the world #1 Djokovic being out with injury in 2016 or does he not count as a top gun these days? o_O

I think Murray's risking his career by playing these tournaments with a hip injury if that's what he has. He will start looking like old man agassi very soon. He should skip the whole summer hardcourt season.

No, it's plain and simple that Murray is only #1 because the two best players in the world right now missed the second half of the season. Absolutely embarrassing, no one's ever been #1 without even a slam final to their name.

Absolute crud. Until to-day, Murray held the Wimbledon title and he still holds the WTF title and 3 Masters titles so he HAS been the #1 with a Slam title to his name! So what's your point??

The only 'absolutely embarrassing' thing around here are your posts, mate!

You realize that Federer has never lost to Murray @ Wimbledon, right? Only in that Olympic silver medal match back in 2012, but while it was played at the AELTC, it was not Wimbledon as we know it.

I think he might have meant reached a slam final this year, but even so it doesn't mitigate what Murray did last year to earn that #1 ranking and overtake Djokovic.

maybe Murray wouldnt still be #1 if:

1. Stan was consistent, but he only seems able to maybe win 1 major a year otherwise he is touch and go
2. Fed hadn't missed half of the year last year with injury and skipped the entire clay season this year to prepare for Wimbledon
3. Rafa had been halfway decent last year, which really he wasnt he struggled until this year
4. Novak had a major to his name right now

seriously people need to stop blaming Murray and the ranking system itself when the factors involved in this are the players themselves

True, but it was on the very same court, surface and venue where he had beaten him only a month earlier!

For a 36 year old guy, nothing is guaranteed. That includes the next two matches, and certainly everything beyond that point. He still has work to do to win this tournament, and there's a lot of tennis left to be played this year.

The way it's going, it might be down to only Fed and Nadal on HCs, on opposite sides of the draw.

Well from this week on he's a definite embarrassment as #1. hell, even Djokovic had a better 2016 season. Murray would trade his 1 slam and 2 finals for 2 slams and a final all day. He was a fairly deserving #1 after djoko crashed out of AO, but right now this is an absolute shame for the sport.

Yeah I know, it takes nothing away from Murray. Although, I think that Del Potro match probably took nearly everything emotionally and physically out of Fed, but that's why you play the game!

Get over yourself and learn some tennis history. Lendl went a year as #1 without winning any Slams. Wilander never won anything of significance after he became #1. Neither did Becker or Roddick. We won't even get into Rios. So I think the game will somehow survive the 'embarrassment' of any remaining weeks that Murray may hold the #1 ranking! The fact remains for the first 36 weeks of his reign as #1, and that's a lot longer than Wilander or Becker or Roddick held it, Murray was the Wimbledon champion and still holds the WTF and 3 Masters. Yes, his 2017 season has been a disappointment and he will be the first to concede that he hasn't played like a world #1 this year. He has clearly picked up an injury that may require some time off to heal (as happened with Federer and Nadal last year).

Surely anyone with more than 1 braincell can see there's some exceptional circumstances to the current men's rankings? You've got the best player of 2016 (Murray) suffering from the beginning of 2017 with shingles and a constant hip injury, really struggling for form. You've got 2 best players of all time coming back on the circuit and winning a slam each... and the former best player (Novak) fell off a cliff mid-2016 in terms of form.

Put those factors together and you naturally get a low ranking point number at the top. It's basic common sense surely? It's pretty obvious to anyone who isn't a wind-up merchant Murray has been physically struggling. If he'd been fully fit this year the ranking points would look very different right now...

You sound like Djokovic made any slam finals this year. Actually Murray has reached at least the same stage as Djokovic (and twice went farther) in every slam in 2017 so far.

And I think Sampras when he first became #1 in 1993 he was slamless in the last 52 weeks.

That's true but he was only Slamless for about 3 months until he won Wimbledon and he had already won his 1st Slam title 3 years earlier at the US Open.

Their 2017 Slam record so far is:

Murray: 4R, SF, QF.

Djokovic: 2R, QF, QF.
