What are your thoughts on Serena? I like Venus a lot more, let's put it this way.

Serena has an extremely solid serve that can be overpowering. I think that her nerves under pressure are pretty solid, too. She's a tremendous athlete, quite large and muscular compared to the vast majority of her opponents, and this has helped her quite a bit along the way--one who can constantly hit with pace because of her athleticism and mass usually does not get pushed around very much but is rather the one who is pushing all of the others around. So, I think this has been a major factor in her success. I have never been overly impressed by Serena's tennis game. Her physical strength and explosive movement? Yes, this has been impressive. But I would much rather watch Radwanska or Edberg play, just because their games are so much nicer looking to me. . .or maybe it's because they seem less self-absorbed than Serena and they never publicly pulled the victim card when things weren't going their way which would have been a really ugly thing to do.

Lots of muscular women play tennis, very few are as successful as SW. She is obviously very talented, her attitude of course os another matter.

Lots of women are muscular, few are as explosive. She is rare, a combination of mass and speed joined at the highest levels. Like an NFL lineman with a 4.3 40, or Shaquille O'Neal. That is her.
It is more than her being merely muscular.

I agree. Serena has had more success as of late of the two but I feel like Venus has a cooler head under pressure. She doesn't yell or scream. She just gets depressed ( same as I do) until she hits a good shot then she gets back in it. Not saying I don't like Serena, but if the sisters play against each other in a final I'm rooting for Venus.

On a side note: hope your thread lasts longer than mine. I put this same thread in a poll during the summer and the mods deleted it in 6 hours.

Well Serena has many more comebacks from deficits under pressure than Venus does. Many argue that Serena's the best fighter in women's tennis this era.

As they came in the scene back in the mid 90' Venus emerged first and talked about her little sister who was even better. I thought that funny till I saw Serena in action. It's true enough. Even if characterwise Venus seems to me more elligible.

Serena for her part has the talent to have dominated the scene Graf-like for at least a decade, or so. Unfortunately her focus has not been on that, so one could say she is an under-achiever despite all her titles. Having said this I still think it's amazing to watch when an in-form Serena meets the other top girls. There real is a difference, which highlights her as one of the hall of fame in Women's tennis.

I hope she fares well in the coming years despite all her flavs, since she really is nice to watch (technicallywise-O'course) when she is into it. As for her interviews, who cares?

birth lottery? so all those years of training with her dad are just a figment of my imagination?

We have a fuzzy construct used in describing what's behind one's phenotype, it's called nature/nurture. Training falls under nurture, the rest belongs to nature. Neither can be ignored.

LOVE these highlights, she's so mentally strong it's ridiculous. Sharapova's screaming in that first link is absolutely insane. She shouldn't be allowed to play tennis while shrieking THAT LOUD each point.

and thats why i say, love her or hate her, if you bother with the WTA at all, appreciate the mental fortitude. no meltdowns, chokes, sevice yips and overall WTFery. A true champion.

Hopefully Kvitova can pick up the mantle when the WS fall off....

especially considering she doesnt do it in practice, its obvious cheating.

Serena's talent, physical gifts, and match toughness are without question.

Her often poor off court attitude and the way she puts down the sport are really off-putting. Plus her game, while effective, isn't the most pleasant to watch.

still not as bad as sharapova and the whole russian fleet losing to Oudin in that same USO.

and yes serena does not posess alot of finesse, but I appreciate an aggressive player.

Well I finished part 4, The comebacks against Venus in the 08 Open are just sickening. I didn't get to see the match, so I had no idea Venus was playing THAT WELL. It's scary how well they were playing there, especially Venus, and still losing, I know that one stung.

That must have been a tough match fot Venus, she has a total of 10 SET POINTS in match and didn't convert any. She played fantastic that day too.

She really should have straight setted Serena that day.

Serena is just more ruthless against Venus and able to block the sibling thing better than Venus.

My jaw was on the computer desk watching those highlights. She really SHOULD have straight setted Serena, but something crazy happened just about every set point, and she just couldn't win one for nothing. I know she had to be FUMING inside but kept her composure completely.

Love her or hate her, Serena is arguably an amazing tennis player. Her serve is arguably the best in the game today, and her 2nd serve is arguably the best ever among women. She keeps her head cool and her ability to deliver a 2nd serve ace is just uncanny when she wants to do it. She is explosive and even injured she can still usually make her opponents squirm.

She is also probably mentally the toughest woman since Steffi Graf to step onto a tennis court. Her ability to tough out matches and come from behind in situations where she should get beaten is amazing. It takes a lot to beat her and unless you stay on course the entire time she will likely make you pay for any lapse, just a few instances of this:

2003 Aussie SF against Clijsters
the already mentioned US Open match against Venus
2009 Aussie QF against Azarenka- least I think it was 09...down a set and 4-0 in the 2nd?

She usually doesn't get rattled by opponents very much, Venus could do it, and so could Henin...but usually the person across the net just has to flat out smoke her from all angles if they are going to win and Serena is playing well.

She does however have 2 major flaws.
1) Her lack of commitment has lead to her being a massive underacheiver. Based on her 2002-2003 form I and a lot of other people thought she was on track to Martina/ Evert numbers at the majors...but since then she has been sidetracked by off the court interests that have hindered her commitment to her fitness, the tour as a whole, and other things. She was almost a non-entity for a lot of 2004-2008 save the 2 Australians she won in that time, and her performance at the 2004 YEC. She rebounded in 2008 though and had a 2nd smaller wave of dominance in the wake of Henin's disappearance.

2) She has iron nerves at times with her opponents, but she certainly has a lot of trouble keeping her cool anytime the officiating goes in anyway against her. No I am not just taking the 2009 and 2011 US Open Fiascos, although those are really enough. She lost her head during the poor officiating at the 2004 US Open QF against Capriati, smacking endless UE's and losing. Now the officiating stunk big time, but Serena did herself no favors by allowing it to bother her to the level it did. The 2003 French Open is also an example, the chairs call rattled her immensely in regards to the hand incident and her form was altered the entire match there after. She has a lot of trouble shacking things off, so to speak.

But, in spite of those things she is an amazing player, 13 majors, easily a top 10 player on any sensible all time list, powerful serve, intensity, hunger. Say what you will about her personality and her attitude...but she makes the WTA interesting. You may not like everything that comes out of her mouth, but without a personality like her on the WTA right now it would even more boring then everyone says it is.

Spot on. Good review:)

Remember watching her play injured vs Henin at Wimbledon, inspiring. Unfortunately for women's tennis, she and her sister are a one-off phenomenon (contradiction in terms but I always consider them as a package) and the game will truly be the poorer without them.

To me Venus looks more graceful but also more hesitant. She lacks the overbearing self-confidence her sister brings on court. Doesn't seem to hit through balls the way Serena does but her movement is really pleasing to the eye.

Serena is the improved version, that's the final verdict, but I appreciate them equally.

Yep, when they are both gone, I can't see myself watching the WTA anymore. Something drastic would have to happen.
