Gosh, so much to answer, rommil.

In any event, the issues re Andy have been covered here every week and twice on Sundays. Nothing new. *yawn*

I think I have given Roger his kudos, and then some, which he does deserve. Sorry if I don't erect a shrine, but that is reserved to Pete for the moment.

The issue you raise re Andy's bickering has been covered in the press. And has been given it's due. Folks here give it overdue because they don't like him and want folks not to like him either. So they can focus on that, and not on the positives.

But the press don't think that way. They don't consider him a bad boy, because he generally is pretty nice. So when he goes ballistic here and there, which is very rare nowadays, they focus on the stuff that offsets it.

Which is what folks always don't do here. There are the "exceptions."

With respect to the "controversy" at the net, I was looking to cover a new angle that I hadn't heard about, and the media hadn't.

And I'm still looking for that one. Still don't have the facts to do it, though. But I'm waiting. Got info, let me see it.

And if you don't like Andy's game, go to a tourney and tell him yourself. You guys are men (at least you try to act as though you are), you don't need me to do it for you.

And if it isn't worth your doing in person, well, I assume it's not worth that much to you.

I completely agree with Rommil. We can all see that Roddick toned down his act a bit with Gilbert but he still shows his true colors. Didnt you see how he threw his racquet across the court into the media box and almost hit a photographer (federer match)? Thats insane. He still puts on his little "shows" and pretends to be funny. He is very unsportsmanlike like. I simply dont like him. I dont hate him....I dont like him. Basically, anyone that he plays against, I'll root for the other guy.

But can you promise me to tell Roddick when you talk to him that I(just tell him my name) don't like watching him play because he complains too much?

Susan, where are they now? Although the rest of them are ranked below Andy as of the moment, this I can suggest. Check the ATP rankings. There is a guy there ranked higher than Andy. Federer, Roger Federer is the name.

I really think you are on questionable ground here Susan. In YOUR opinion it has been given it's "due". In your opinion it is given "overdue" here. But obviously there are many who don't think it is still worth mentioning. This is subjective, there is no way to objectively determine "due" so if many feel it bears mentioning, you cannot make their criticism's less valid this way. You seem to agree that they have valid criticism's...you simply don't think they should be paid that much attention to. Which is fine but it is not a rebuttal.

In any case, this is what I was asking in the other thread I started. If you think that people are "overdue"ing it and they simply want others to hate Roddick, then what is their real motivation? You agree their criticism's are valid, you just don't think they deserve that much weight...so the obvious question is, why do you think they are giving it so much weight?

Also, I don't think the "press doesn't dwell on it" is a valid defense.
The people here are free to mull things over and state their opinions, if they are dwelling on such things then that is more representative of a viewer's opinion than press articles...most press are restricted to reporting current events in at least a superficially objective manner....

*sigh*

My point is that I'm not hearing any criticism about Andy that I haven't heard for the past 3 years.

The only difference is that back then he was No. 50 or whatever in the world.

And now he is No. 2, and was No. 1, or whatever.

It's just the same, same, same, same, same.

He can't win for losin' so to speak.

But he has the last laugh -- as he's the one taking the money to the bank, even with all his limited talent.

And you guys are wasting your breath, because notwithstanding what you said 3 years ago, he is still a factor on the ATP

So put that in your pipe and smoke it --

along with whatever else you are smoking.

Ah OK Susan. You basically like Roddick and you don't like all the criticism of him. Which is understandable and human.

I think you have to ask yourself why people are doing this and have been whether he is #1 or #50. Your criticism of the posters is logically rather weak as I pointed out and while I sympathize with you being tired of reading the negative posts, it would seem the issue here is more your like of Roddick not their dislike....

However, I really do sympathize with you, it's not pleasant to read negative posts about someone you like. It's clear though that some people feel this much criticism is due whether you or I agree with the amount or magnitude of it. If it's more than I think is warranted then I ask what I think is inspiring it. You seem to imply that perhaps people begrudge the money he is making. I don't know if this is true or not in individual cases, though it doesn't explain why they don't dislike the other top players(who make nearly as much) or why they disliked him when he was #50 and not making that much...

Yes, rommil, but where are they now?

If Andy drops back to no-man's land (which many of you hopefully predict), no one will care.

But he's at the top. So everything he does is emphasized, whereas even worse things others do aren't publicized. Or they are de-emphasized.

Wrong on both points. Tarango, Spadea and Rusedski are in no-mans land but any questionable behavior by them is also given negative publicity here. Tarango is still called a jerk if he is discussed here even though he no longer plays. Spadea was treated negatvely for some 'off the wall' show he filmed and Rusedski is still treated negatively for some comment he made a few years ago about Sampras. Some posters write alot but clearly don't know the game or even play the game.

Also a contradiction because Susan said if he drops back nobody will care but later posts that people have been criticizing him whether he was ranked highly or not.

can i remind everyone this is a public forum and kudos to everyone who has an opinion. who is this susan lady trying to lecture? it better not be me. i love, i mean love, my freedom of speech. don't you? you should be happy these people are giving you something to write about. furthermore, don't glorify the media in making sure that roddick's public personna is made neutral by your undying efforts to have the public see the good in him. puh-lease. the media's job is to make sure a story sells. i know all the good stuff he does. i think he's a nice person. i just hate his game.

it was my opinion that roddick's game is just plain ugly. so what? get over it. if it makes you feel better, i don't like watching karlovic, amy frazier, or arantxa either.

Hi, Susan, please tell Andy I don't like it when he hurls his stick into the photog's box or does a Jimmy Connors-imitation on the ump. I have defended his game, so I'll ask you to pass those comments on to him. Use my name if you like.

Andy does what he does. He's a tremendous player. But he has a few flaws. As a poster pointed out a few days ago, he also gives up against Federer, throws in the towel at a certain point. Now, that's his right, but as a top-level competitive player getting wealthy from his desire and ability to compete at the top level, I think he should use the Connors instincts more on the court when he is playing Roger. Jimmy was a whole lot more crass than Andy - more like Rios in some ways - but he fought like a junkyard dog.

If I make it to IW next year, we'll set a time and Andy can beat me upside the head with his PD. :)

Susan, in your previous post you challenged people to bring up issues to Roddick because you claimed that you have the access to talk to him or whatever. Now people are telling you to tell Roddick that they are annoyed by his behavior and antics and what do you do?"Be a man, go tell him yourself". First of all, I will not pay money nor time to see Roddick play in a tournament.
Then you start to rammble about other side issues(e.g. Roddick having the last laugh, walking to the bank with his money with his limited talent). That's not what we are talking about. How did you get there?
So back to the point. Again, since you claim that you have press access, will you be able to tell Andy that rommil and larrhall(just say we are some nobodies from a message board, is that ok larr?) thinks that he complains to much and that it might help his results if he avoids it? Will you be "woman" enough to do that?(at least you act that you think you are).

Roddick does come off as arrogant and he plays with an unnecessary swagger when he's winning. When he's loosing....that goes away. He also makes snide comments to chair umps even when he is well ahead in the match. It's like he can't just be gracious and let something go. He has to knit pick, and half the time he is wrong about the incident any way.

I don't like the way he gives those practiced pat answers during press confrences or interviews.

As for something specific....did you catch what he said to Federer when they shook hands after the Canandian final? It was gross, and not appropriate for the setting.

 Sorry for somehow giving the impression that I can serve as a messenger between this Board and Andy. I can ask him, and any other player, questions in press conferences, but it's not as if I'm going to pull him aside, especially when ESPN, CNN/SI, BBC, Skysports, etc., are vying for his time, and say, "Andy, here's some advice from so and so at the TW on how you can improve your results." I'm sure he is aware of the Board, and can log on for advice any time he wants. Otherwise, I'll leave the advice giving to Brad, Doug, etc.

I just read Andy's and Roger's interviews, and no mention about the "incident" at the net. In fact, Andy said wonderful things about Roger in his interview. I think it was a joke. But if I find out anything worth asking about that, I will. I did think that was interesting.

Onward and upward . . .

But on a more constructive note, if someone has a really good question to ask a male pro (something that hasn't been asked a bunch of times) and you'd like me to consider asking it, e-mail me at susan@tennisnews.com. It's nice to have new ideas of things to ask.

I'll be at the Open for most of the first week. I'm covering the ATP mostly, so probably won't be going to too many women's matches/ press conferences.

Also, if I'm out covering matches, I can't always get to all the press conferences. Lots going on in the first few days, so I have to see how much I can get to.

But I'm going to the Houston Masters, too, and there will be plenty of opportunity to ask all 8 guys questions, as they are interviewed after each of their matches. :D

Thanks.

It can't be boring if you spend time posting numerous responses to issues which you claim are sleep inducing. Another contradiction.

Susan, there is a danger when people talk too much. Sometimes you lose track of what you say that some how you will end up contradicting your self.
