Clay season is his best surface and he must earn the most points as possible in order to have a chance at #1. In the past years he earned between 3,500+ to 5000+ points during the clay season, but it looks like he will have a hard time gaining those points which will not be good enough to get pass every players.

Too many players that he has to overcome, not just Nole.
Current Ranking
1 Novak Djokovic 13845
2 Roger Federer 8645
3 Andy Murray 7130
4 Milos Raonic 5160
5 Tomas Berdych 5140
6 Kei Nishikori 5040
7 Rafael Nadal 4990
8 David Ferrer 4310
9 Stan Wawrinka 3575
10 Marin Cilic 3360

I never thought it was possible for him to regain No. 1 in 2013, yet he surprised me and most people. It's not out of the realm of possibility, but I think it's highly doubtful.

After RG, the only direction Rafa can go is up North.

However Murray and Novak will pummel him left and right at the HC tournaments.

So, Rafa may end up this year with the lone ATP 250 he won in South America. He will end up in top 8 still.

Probably the one with the least number of titles in 2015 but still in top 8.

It only needs to be appoint at the end of the day, well, season. Then again, a draw and meeting the right characteristics, like having played fewer tournaments

E. Ties. When two or more players have the same total number of points, ties shall be broken as follows:

1) the most total points from the Grand Slams, ATP World Tour Masters 1000 mandatory tournaments and Barclays ATP World Tour Finals main draws, and if still tied, then,

2) the fewest events played, counting all missed Grand Slams, ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments and Barclays ATP World Tour Finals they could have played (as described under A. above) as if played, and if still tied, then,

3) the highest number of points from one single tournament, then, if needed, the second highest, and so on.

I think it's a record. No #1 has ever had such a point lead over the #2.

By nominal value; however the points system was changed after 2008 so with adjusted values for pre-2009 rankings, Federer has the record for point lead over #2 based on performance.

Federer ended no.6 in 2013 despite only havin a title at Halle.

So these things happen.

Seeing that he is not gaining big points at clay, definitely it is kinda utopic to think about it. He has to maintain a top 4 position first

The ultimate accomplishment in the sport of tennis is winning ITF-sanctioned grand slam events. THAT is what #Rafael continues to play for. #WeeksAtNumberOne is an Open-Era-only statistic which is irresponsibly described in this forum as something more important than an #ITF-sanctioned grand slam event. #WeeksAtNumberOne only spans 40 years of the sports 120 year history. #Minor

ITF counts the points earned at slams

rafa earned 0 points at AO, 2000 at RG and USO and very few points at Wimbledon.

thats like 4200 points

Novak earned 2000 points at AO, 1200 at Wimbledon, USO and about 600-700 at RG... thats about 5000 points...

Anyays nobody cares about ITF "best player" in the eyes of the people the dominant player is the one who wins the most slams..

Except Agassi does a former great ever returned to number 1 once his ranked dropped as low as number 7? If we include the age of Rafa than unlikely. But still he has earned the benefit of the doubt :)

I don't get swayed over Munich and Madrid. Let me see him successful at 5 consecutive tournaments and then I will hop on the bandwagon

If he can play that well on his worst surface, what makes you think he won't be able to do even better on grass and fast HC? :???:

Maybe last year? Look what happened there. That said, like you, I'm expecting better grass and HC results than last year. Murray seems recovered from the surgery for good now.

when he lost to murray on clay in madrid I never thought he would sink that low. So it doesn't look likely which is sad.
The fire and perhaps the knee are not what they were.

Nadal earned a total of 1190 ATP points for the entire clay season this year before heading into the FO. That's well below his standard in the last 10 years.

I can't see him reaching #1 if he can't dominate the clay season.

I am not sure if Nadal will reach number one again but I do think he will probably win more slams.

I don't trust myself to say it is completely over for Nadal. In my gut, I think he will make some sort of a comeback. My gut is right 90% of the time.

YES, IF:
- Fed retired in a month.
- Djoker gave up on his diet and started pounding donuts.
- Andy became such a headcase that he was committed to a padded room with a straighjacket.
- Kei's burn racket literally burned his hand maiming him for a few years.
- Del Po never returned (sad)
- Raonic's injury kept him out 2+ years.
- Berd lost all the progress he made the last year.
- Ferrer tanked matches out of respect to Rafa.

Yeah, if all those things came together he's got a good chance. But in all seriousness he can't even keep up with Ferrer in 2015... what are we even talking about lol?

My gut says the dude is looking old and slow in a game where you can't be old and slow...ever.

So, maybe if Doc Brown rolled up to his house in a Delorean and took him back to 2008 form...

Doubt it. Nadal would need a much better start to the season if he were to achieve #1, but I have a feeling that won't happen.

The problem is Nadal's forehand, and backhand.

Nadal's forehand is still lethal sometimes, but nowadays Nadal's just returning a spinny ball, without any power or depth; or too much power which causes a fault.

Nadal's backhand has become underwhelming, in a BH to BH battle, even Murray could beat Rafa.

With those important weaknesses, I can't see him returning to #1. Maybe back up to #3, but that's about it.

what an impressive points lead Nole has over Federer

Even more impressive lead he has over Nadal. I mean 3 times as points and they are both the same age. That is impressive.

I'm really starting to believe that Djokovic is equal to Nadal. Sure, Rafa has more slams, by amassing clay titles, but Djokovic seems more rounded and consistent.
Plus, it seems Djokovic will have more longevity.

Rafa had an early start, but Djokovic was still consistent nr.3 in Fedal Era, but Rafa is nowhere close to nr.3 in Djokovic era. That says a lot.

I believe Nole got the nod over Rafa due to being more consistent overall in the ITF events (W SF F F as opposed to DNP W 1R W)
