mariano puerta doping case

it will sound really rare, but I heard that the atp paid mariano puerta about 4 million dolars to mantain silence when his doping was postive in the french open final in 2005. Rafaels nadal doping gave positive and not hes. But as you can image they couldn`t suspend nadal due to its image and fame, and they do what they do with puerta.

Yeah! The same with Juan I. Chela, Guillermo Coria, Guillermo Cañas, etc. They were framed!

Yo no lo creo, y me parece una gansada.

I'VE GOT THE SAME STORY LAsT WEEK FROM A LOCAL PRO !!!!!

It's a lot better for this bussiness (tennis) to have a Nadal than having Puerta.
Nadal sells a lot more than Puerta so.....

Andres,

esto suena como la historia sobre Maradona, no? es solo una casualidad que lo que dice este chico me lo comentaron a mi la semana pasada. Dicen que le pagaron a Puerta para hacer el test en lugar de Nadal.......nada documentado, es solo un rumor.

English please.. this is an international forum.

So: What did you say? :)
International forum: Meaning there are people who doesn't speak english. Meaning that some people don't have the obbligation of speaking english.
Meaning that in the rules, it's not specified "ENGLISH ONLY", cause spanish is the 2nd most spoken language in the world, after mandarin chinese :)

Doping controversies

In 2003 Puerta received a two-year doping suspension after testing positive for clenbuterol at Viña del Mar. In his defense he argued that the substance had been administered to him by his doctor to combat asthma and that it had no performance-enhancing effect. The sanction was subsequently reduced to nine months suspension and a US$5600 fine.

In 2005, he was once again banned, this time after he tested positive for the use of the cardiac stimulant etilefrine. The suspension was for 8 years, the longest so far in tennis history. Puerta also had his results disqualified from every event from the 2005 French Open onwards, and forfeited all his entry ranking points and prize money. Since he had recently lost the French Open final to Spain's Rafael Nadal, that signified a loss of €443,282 (£300,671, $456,000).

The International Tennis Federation tribunal noted, however, that "The amount of etilefrine in his body was too small to have any effect on his performance" [1]. Puerta appealed against the ban, claiming on his web site that he only ingested trace amounts of it accidentally left over by his wife in a glass.

On July 12, 2006 his suspension was reduced to 2 years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, making him eligible to restart his career on June 5th 2007.

Poor guy, just a scapegoat.Maybe he'll pull a Tommy Haas though.

It's not polite, imo even very rude.. There are people here who don't understand spanish. I'm very curious as to what you said still.

I don't believe the stuff about Nadal, would really shake up the game if it was true but I just can't see it.

As for Puerta, I feel he was innocent. The traces were not enough to give him an advantage which makes an 8 year ban seem pretty silly, particularly as it seems apparent he didn't have the intent to take the substance.

I think he is due back in June so hopefully he will be able to get back to somewhere near the level that his talent deserves.

I worked all last week in the telmex cup, atp of buenos aires, and I heard the rumor there! Is logic, since nadal sells much more image than mariano puerta!
read the hole post in spanish, is much more complete.

I don´t know how someone had the balls to make a thread of this.
If your point is that Puerta didn´t deserve to be suspended for 2 years it´s ok, but let alone this "patriotism" slandering other guy who is a legitimate champion. Let´s defend Puerta but what you did is totally classless, not a good way to start here.

I wish I could read it lol ;)

It certainly is logical but I don't think the ATP would be that corrupt, also for Puerta to have to live with the stigma of being a cheat and to never play competitive tennis again would be something that i'm sure no amount of money could persuade him to do.

Talking about "patriotism" I think your position is clearly in favour of Nadal, ovbiously Zaragosa you are Spaniard...........so don't ask the other ones to be objective when you're not.

Don´t make me laugh. Anyone with a brain would say it´s a silly accusation, you don´t need to be spaniard or argentinian. If some spaniard player tested positive, I would never slander the guy who played against him to defend the spaniard player.
"Objective" is someone who doesn´t believe some rumour without a proof, so I´m being objective here and the guy who said that isn´t being objective.
Now someone who reacts against a non-sense accusation isn´t objective? Give me a break.
And he´s not just slandering Nadal, he is also insulting Puerta if he implies his dignity as a person and an athlete costs 4 million $.
Off the record, Puerta is my favourite player between the non-spaniards.

It's to bad that you aren't even willing to translate and share information when asked to. Spanish maybe the second language in the world, but English is much more widespread around the globe. It's obvious you are able to read and write in english. Don't want to argue any further about it.

On-Topic:
I would be happy to see Puerat back in the game after this summer. Just hope that he will be able to reach the same level again, and that will be very hard. Is he still ranked actually?

Yes, it is rude for people to speak in another language and not let the others understand, while they are easily capable of doing so. Not saying that anyone who hasn't helped the non-Spanish speaking people are simply rude people in general, but the act is rude.
Jelle, there are a lot of make-shift translators all over the internet. Babel Fish is good. It's not perfect, but you can get the basic understanding. There isn't much to what was said, however: OP said that it was easy to let Puerta be "caught" so to speak because he has already been "guilty" before, so the second time would look just as guilty. It wouldn't be convenient for the ATP to let Nadal get "caught." He also said that he worked at the Copa Telmex all last week and had various sources confirm his speculations. That's as much as I understood.

I think it's only a conspiracy theory and nothing more. I've been hearing this rumor about Nadal doping for two years. Nothing has come of it and probably never will. Without confirmations, these are all just speculations, and maybe wishful thinking on part of the anti-Nadal's.

I think when the whole site is in english and the home site is based in the US then it's safe to assume it's an english based message board.

That being said the old, 'oooh, Nadal has muscles he must be on steroids' rumors are tiresome. And they are rarely leveled by Americans because we are used to athletes having a developed upper body.

I have a picture of my son with Nadal in the year 2004. At that time Nadal was about 1.80 m (5'11" ) tall and he was 17 years old. He was already a strong guy and his weight was around 75 - 78 Kgs. Right now, four years later, according to atptennis.com, he is 1.85 m (6' 1"), 85 Kgs (188 lbs.)
So he grew 5 cm (2") and increased his weight in 8 - 10 Kg (about 20 lbs.).
Is that unusual at that age? I don't think so.

I can't understand what's the deal with Nadal. He is a strong player with great legs for tennis. His strokes, full of topspin makes feel Federer uncomfortable. But Nadal is far from being invencible. His main achievement are his victories over Federer. These matches put him in the headlines. His flamboyant game is very attactive to fans and media. So it can't be real. There has to be something wrong because he's too good. Doping? steroids? There has to be a reason for this incredible physical development. I'll bet Nadal is taking banned substances......please...that's stupid!!!

My son, who is in this picture , in the same period grew 12" and is about 15 Kgs. heavier. Steroids? Absolutely not. He eats like an animal and practices tennis 3 hours per day.

By the way, the same day of this picture, Nadal defeated Federer 6/3 6/3 at the Nasdaq 100 Open.

http://picasaweb.google.es/jlkm2219/FotosNasdaq/photo#5035502649891198498

Regarding Puerta, I wish he would return to the élite of tennis. I really liked his game. He commited a mistake, same as Chela, Cañas and other argentinian players. Frankly I don't think that these players needed that substances to success in tennis. I think they took an easier way to recover from injuries. It was just stupid, not an anti-argentinian conspiracy.

P.S. To the non spanish speaking members: "www" means world wide web, globalization the whole world, different countries and cultures. USA in not the navel of the world and english is not the only important language. As a latino I'm proud of my mother language and I'm doing an effort to speak and write in english. Maybe I'm not Shakespeare but at least I'm trying to do my best.
Writing in spanish is not in any way a lack of respect to the forum.

Best regards, saludos, shalom, salaam, ciao, aufwidrsehen.....

I´m agree with most of the things you say except that Nadal´s main achievement is beating Federer. That´s something to admire but his 2 French Open titles, Wimbledon final, no.2 ranking in the last 2 years and longest streak on clay ever are much more important achievements to me. I could mention the Davis Cup title in 2004 but that´s a teams competition.

Winning two Roland garros is a great achievement. No doubt. Kuerten won three RG and never had the media coverage that Nadal has. Nadal is a great player, but his rivalry with Federer and the fact that he has a positive balance against him, is, according to what I've seen in the media, even more important than his two RG and other great perfomances.
