ok, i was watching the sharapova match (maybe rerun from earlier) on the tennis channel last night. sharapova was on. the last time i watched her played, i had mute on (AO i think.), didn't last long until i changed channel.

this time around, i thought i give it a shot and watch it with just a bit of sound. i changed my mind after i heard her screams. she makes one of the most annoying sheiksssssssssssssssss sounds ever. i then put mute on and eventually, changed the channel.

it kinda make me want to watch a williams match and i definitly like sharapova more as a tennis player due to williams's off court antics and attitude toward other players (maybe just their dad). anyway...this is what i called desperately hoping, wishing, & praying that this "scream" will be address by wta tennis (i know they won't, due to her top ranking and popularity).

she is a top player and all.
i really want to watch tennis.
in a way, i hope she doesn't make it too deep into the tournament as i want to watch tennis, damn it. this is sad.

It really bothers me too from a spectator perspective. I just put in on mute
I have to say that it could be considered gamesmanship to an extent as to have your opponent scream at you every time they hit a ball must be off putting

I kinda hoped that since she's no longer #1, TTC and ESPN2 would show *other* matches. "Oh well...."

I left the TV on Mute and occasionally glanced at the creeper to see what other players' were doing.

I don't have a problem with shrieking from anyone. A lot of tour players men and women (women probably a little more though) make noises while hitting the ball. It is not uncommon. Yes, some shriek a little more or louder than others. I think it would be silly to ban it, it's part of the game and part of them working hard every shot.

There is a huge difference between shrieking and what Sharapova does. I enjoy watching her but that voice!!! It drives me nuts, so I too usually have the tv muted - mind you, I usually mute out the annoying commentators too (especially during their love fests on their favourite players).

I don't really mind grunting, like what Rafa or Serena do most of the time.

But Venus and Maria are truly annoying to watch most of the time.

Did anyone notice, that during her first round match, her opponent began making low pitch grunts, and I swear to god, Maria started grunting in the same pitch to match her. It was freaky.

The squeeling like a pig in heat is bad, but is worse is when they do it on easy shots like volleys, or even worse, when they take practice swings.

WTA definitely has to do something about this. Maybe if they made them play naked they would feel silly making all those weird noises??????

I watched 5 minutes of her match. My wife (who hates sports) was watching with me. She does not mind watching Federer and some other players. She asked me why that girl (Sharapova) was screaming. I told her its part of her game....she asked me to please turn the channel...I did. I really hate the WTA.

Did you know there is actually a gym ( I think its in Jersey City), where they put up a alarm that alerts management when someone grunts or yells over a certain level. Apparently their policy is that grunting and so forth is not allowed and distracting.

Some poor sap doing power squats was booted when he started to grunt. Made the news.

I once played a guy who would actually spoke words as he hit the ball. "come on", "hit through", "topspin".. Very odd. I may take the grunt over that.

my friend was at last yr's women's US open final. he was all the way up in the z section. even with the loud wind blowing, he can still hear sharapova shriek. he thought of jumping off the stadium to end his misery.

i wish they have enough players to protest and give the organizers something to go by and actual TRY to issue warnings.

Cannot see it happening. Like Seles, and others before her, it's part of the game. Don't like it, best thing you can do is not promote her. She is top bill at the moment.

It is annoying. I can only imagine what her singing voice would be like. I'm thinking a high pitch only small animals, like her dog in that canon commercial, could hear.

Besides the screaming, I wish she would stop yelling "vamos". Its disturbing. Isn't there a translation for it in Russian.

The Tour is kinda "handcuffed" on this. They have to be able to prove it's done to distract or cover the sound of the player's own ball strike. Only then is it a violation of the rules.

I think fans should start shrieking from the effort of having to watch her play. If enough spectators actually ridiculed her, she'd stop. (Think back to the matches where she's being thrashed by a better player: she doesn't shriek then....)

actually, i dont know why I don't get irritated by her shrieking. Maybe because I'm so used to it already but I remember in wimbledon Maria vs Venus they were shrieking louder and louder as the rallies got longer, and it was hilarious, i remember the crowd laughing as well.

I went John Newcombe's ranch for a weekend and we got onto that topic somehow, and he went further than you and called it "legalized cheating!" He was demonstrating the different spins (slice/flat/topspin) and showed how the sound was different w/ each shot and said when he was playing he relied on the sound of the hit as an important cue to what kind of shot was coming.
Sharapova he said was yelling after she hit so you couldn't pick up on that cue.

"stop shrieking" ....very true when she is losing.

i hope she lose more often than. this means that i have to pull for williams. tough one but i have too. can't believed i am typing this "go williams."
this is indeed sad and a low for me but i paid $8 a month for the tennis channel and i am going to enjoy it.

that way, i can enjoy watching tennis again.

I never thought of this really but its not a bad point. That said you would think the visual cues would be greater. I reckon that just the irritant factor must be high though. Has anyone tried shrieking to see if it works in a match? :)

I disagree, sharapova played pretty well today. It was a pretty entertaining womens match mainly due to sharapovas aggression. I saw her hit more drive volleys with her forehand and backhand then some of the guys on the tour. It kind of sucks watching womens tennis when the players arent really well known. I like watching the henin serena and sharapova. Plus it doesnt hurt when the players are hot also.

Mr. Sean. I think most members (myself included) here agreed with you on the that she is a fine looking lady and got a power game.
The fact is that we can't stand her or anyone else when they strike the ball.

i have a few ideas to fix her...

1. we need someone to dubbed her!!! like they do in the movies.
we can have a 3 second delay of the live event to do this!

2. lower the microphone volumes on the court so no human ears can hear her or any other player shriek.

Newcombe obviously has had too many beers over his life to make a statement like that. These days, sound doesn't indicate the spin, the racket movement does. If you waited for a sound, you would be a full beat behind the play.

x2!!! sharapova and williams sisters do it well after the hit, even the commentators (navratilova and ted) make comments about how it was being used for effect, NOT part of their actual playing, just game, right? stuuuuooooopid!

I think it was last year during RG and she,Sharapova was yelling so much,the people at Eurosport received complains about what they described as "indecency" because the yells didn't sound like yells anymore and the people asked them to turn the sound down:lol: :lol: :lol:

Easy, get a decibel meter. If you break a certain level three times you get a point penalty. I would also ban it on set, and match points. The point is replayed if you had a play on the ball, and is lost if you didn't.

bolleteri, he's such a scum bag, it's all his fault for giving this trend gravity and now others are preaching it to their students...it even bleeds over to the kids playing around here, they mimic it, and it's really annoying to be next to their court trying to play...maybe we should just start making fun of them all, that should curb it, huh? wouldn't be anymore unsportsmanlike than the shreiking!

this was recorded a few years back during the NBA game between SPurs & Pistons NBA FINAL....this was at the Detriot's Palace, which holds 22,000 fans.

i bet ShreikaPOVa herself would easily triple that by herself.

This is true.

Bolleteri's henchmen encouraged it during the 80's at least. If you didn't grunt, they precieved you as not trying hard enough. In turn pushing up the routine until they heard something. A little ashamed to say it, but when doing drills today I catch myself grunting. But its a low grunt like a silver back gorrilla. Not a screech (sp)..
