Another new slam champ in WTA

With Swiatek losing, a new slam champ is coming up this week at RG. All semi-finalists are new to Slam SFs (only Pavlyuchenkova reached even quarterfinals).

Abundance of slam winners, unpredictability and surprise victories can be seen as good or bad depending on ones tastes.

Personally, I feel that consistency is sorely lacking even among the top seeds and that is not a good place for the WTA tour to be in.

I think the ATP tour may also end up at a similar position once the Big 3 retire. (though best of 5 ensures that it may never be as random as WTA at the slams)

I’m not sure the ATP will be in the same boat. There’s just so much more consistency (even outside the Big 3) in the men’s game. The women’s game right now is just so, so open. I’m not sure if it’s best of 3 or what, but the women’s seeds seem to be dropping like crazy at all the recent slams. I’m wondering if someone has run some numbers and can make an analytical comparison between the ATP and WTA at say…the last 12 majors and check the rates of players holding their seeds. I’m just guessing but the ATP has to be way ahead, yea?

The ATP will likely never be in the situation the WTA is right now with no top women doing well on clay.

What's happening at RG for the women in the last few years is a joke and shows that nations need to train women on surfaces outside of hard court.

Stef, Diego, thiem (not this time), zverev all have been making the later stages for past 3,4 years. So ATP is gonna be fine not as bad as wta after Serena. WTA is currently not in a good state, the only small certainty being Osaka on HCs.

I was all about Iga taking it, but Sakkari looks too good right now. On par would also be Kracjkova (sp?), so we will see what's up there.

Barty’s won three titles this year (3 more then Kournikova did in her whole career) and just beat the RG champ. She is always funny in her interviews and is the face of many products here in Australia. Not saying she’s as big as the supermodel in the late 90s or Sharapova in the 2000’s but she doesn’t rely on her looks to get her sponsors, she plays the game and she does it well. If you’d rather watch the pretty woman who barely did anything at the slams having made just 1 slam SF instead of the amazing player who’s won 4 of the last 6 hard court slams then go for it.

That revolving door of winners is not good for the WTA marketing. They have the opposite problem of the ATP. The ATP has the same Big 3 winning for 15 years now. Product seems stale. The WTA has 20 'faces' . . . but none of them stand out.

All credit to Sakkari, though I do think that Iga - just turned 20 - will contend for, if not win, quite a few titles at RG.

This was a tough tourney for bigger names as Barty got injured, no Osaka after R1, Halep withdrew (injury) and Iga was a little off, with Sakk taking full advantage.
