I picked up the game about 3 months ago and instantly fell in love with it. I bought a cheapo wilson racquet from walmart and it was perfectly fine the first few times i played. Then i started to actually practice my strokes everyday and started to develop a long loopy swing and a topspin serve. But now when I play a match it seems like I have no control over the ball. Of course it ran across my mind that maybe i should have paid more than $17.99 for a racquet. So my question to you is, how much benefit will I get if I buy a decent racquet? Will a nice racquet help me improve my game faster? Will it hinder my progress to keep using my wal-son?

Going from a $17.99 racquet to higher quality racquet will definately help. Since your just starting out I'd check out some of the sale racquets on TW. Great frames and great prices. No need to drop $150+ on a frame since you'll likely change the different characterisitcs of what you like in a frame more than a few times.

the other cheap solution is to lead it up like crazy, although it would be easier to look at a new racquet. demo some of the racquets in TW's liquidation section and see if one of them is to your liking.
It depends on the particular cheap racquet you got. Some of those cheap frames are pretty decent.
I think a good string setup in a frames is also important, and you will pay more than $18 for that.
Most good players can play well with almost any frame. When and how you decide to upgrade to a better frame is totally up to you, but the main thing you want to do is find a frame and string that feels good to you when you hit the ball.

The problem with the wm racquets is not that you can't play with them, but that they don't last. Mine broke in less than 3 months, so it's really not that cheap at all if you have to replace it several times a year. When yours breaks, buy the Prince Triple Threat Bandit for 54.95 at a major internet retailer. That will keep you going for a long time. As you improve, you can add weight to it.
