Top Newcomer of the Year (So far)?

This year so far has been a good one. The younger guys have finally began making their move into the top echelon of players and we're getting a glimpse of what's to come in the near distant future. At the moment I can think of four guys that have so far made the most progress

Milos Raonic (CAN) Current Ranking: No. 28 (July 18, 2011)

Raonic made a lot of fans early in the year and his early Verdasco drummings made for some LOLs on the forum. Made a surprise run to the 4th round at the Australian Open. He Had some decent runs in 250s and 500s afterwards and managed to win SAP Open and makes the finals of Morgan Keegan consecutively. After IW and Miami...not a whole lot. Raonic Had some success during the clay season making the semis of Estoril but crashed out in the first round of the French. Since then he's been MIA after his injury at Wimbledon

The guy is huge first and foremost and has easily one of the best serves on tour. He has a surprisingly decent all-court game and has good touch at the net. The only gaping flaw in his game is his return. A lot of his matches are going to tiebreaks and he's hardly aggressive enough on snail second serves either. His movement is also pretty suspect and considering how big guys like Del Potro and Soderling have good movement, it's definitely something that can be improved.

Grigor Dimitrov (BGR) Current Ranking: No. 57 (July 25, 2011)

Promising junior hyped to oblivion, but has made some ground in the rankings. Made the second round of the AO and Wimbledon, losing both times to decent seeded players (Wawrinka and Tsonga) Since then Dimitrov have made a couple quarter finals; at Atlanta and Munich.

Dimitrov's game is very pretty, his game is obviously modeled after Federer which isn't a bad thing, but reminds me too much of Rampras. Despite the Federer imitation, his movement is nowhere near as graceful as Fed's. His movement is his biggest limitation. The guy almost inevitably stumbles after every shot under pressure which makes for easy points wrong footing him. Court IQ is also questionable at times, makes head-scratcher shots from time to time.

Ryan Harrison (USA) Current Ranking: No. 94 (July 25, 2011)

Up till only recent, had mediocre success at tour level events with the exception of Indian Wells where he made the 4th round beating Raonic and giving Fed a decent match. Had meh success at slams but pushed Soderling at the French to four sets. Despite his minimal success early in the year, he definitely made good progress by reaching two straight semi finals in Atlanta and at the on-going Farmer's Classic beating Lu too.

He has a all-round solid game. His serve is pretty good and can get his some free points. Net play is pretty good too. Overall has a great game and is fun to watch, only drawback is that he comes off as a dooosh. The guy screams, throws rackets and whines when the chips are down. Easily the most annoying of the top young players coming out. He's Andy Roddick 2.0, in more ways than one...

Bernard Tomic (AUS) Current Ranking: No. 68 (25 July 2011)

The youngest and probably the most promising of all the prospects. Made a great QF run at Wimbledon beating quality players like Soderling, Malisse, Andrev and Davydenko. Lost to Djokovic in four. He also made a decent third round run at Australia. Haven't made a whole lot of success on main tour events but has had good results at Challenger events.

Haven't seen him play at all yet, but from what I hear, he has great court sense but not that many weapons. This may be his biggest advantage over the rest of the guys; if he can already mess with some of the top guys heads at age 18, then there's no telling how much he will improve in the future.

Bernard Tomic and Milos Raonic lead right now with good results in slams. Though right now Harrison is picking up steam....and he can do well at the Upcoming masters and US open!

Tomic has the best results, Raonic most consistent (as shown by his ranking) and Harrison's the most recent

Harrison acts like a brat, and is the least likely of the new guys to really make it. Nice serve, but not much else to really make him stand out. Tomic & Raonic would be my picks.

Eh yeah...Harrison struggled with Lu and thats a guy with imo a very limited arsenal. I agree with tomic and raonic leading the pack.

regarding dmitrov. I saw how Tsonga hammered his bh at their Wimbly match. if he is fed 2.0, then he needs to work on that, as his bh didnt even seem tour level in that match. baby fed had a much better bh than that.

As an American....I want Harrison to achieve a lot :p he has a nice all court game, and he actually uses is slice very well (unlike fellow American Roddick, lol), I think a couple of years at most, he will put it all together and start his big run to the top.

Good analysis.

Why. I don't get it. Because you happened to have been born near the same piece of dirt ? He makes you feel better about yourself if he wins ? I don't get it. I'm American too. Why should I root for a dooosh just because his nationality is the same as mine (see OP analysis).

Incidentally he is supposed to not be a dooosh off the court. Not that that excuses on court doooshery.

hear hear. I couldnt stand Roddick when he first broke out on the tour, because of his *******ry on court. He isnt my favorite player now, but since he has been disabused of notions of being best in the world, he is a lot less of a dick on court and I like him much better. but from say 98-2005, he was an ******* of the highest order.

So far it has to be Tomic after he made his run at Wimbledon. I don't know how Raonic will play after the injury. Harrison is somtimes a brat (like yesterday he threw his racquet across the court), and I wish he didn't do that cause otherwise he would be a likeable kid. I haven't seen much from Dimitrov, but I know he lost a tough 4-setter to Tsonga at Wimbledon.

Anyway I think Harrison will have the brightest future.

Not Exactly "Newcomers"

All of the OP's nominees have been pro since '08 or before. I would nominate Denis Kudla as a true "newcomer" with his two wins at Newport, including one over one aforementioned nominee (Dimitrov).

As to the four listed, Raonic is the most impressive with the title in San Jose plus his Memphis final and AO 4R. He has cooled off since and the injury is a big question-mark, but his upside is stronger in my mind.

Tomic is a natural, has more weaponry than some people suggest, and is just more of a player than his peers at this stage. I'm quite confident that he can challenge for grand slams once he's reached maturity.

I just can't make up my mind about Harrison; he'll break the top 10 eventually and quite possibly stick around for a while, this seems a given what with all the room at the top. But as to whether he's a contender for majors, I'm just not sure. He's making a mini-breakthrough at the beginning of this North American swing, so I hope to see more of him so as to gauge his potential.

I don't get why you are so offended by someone's reasons for liking a player?
I root for the Red Sox and Patriots and Celtics cause I'm from Boston, I root for Roddick and Isner and Harrison because I'm from USA. I also love Nadal, Tsonga, Simon, Gasquet...but you really don't get it? I think you do.

I would personally put Raonic as the best newcomer this year, with Tomic next, then Harrison and then Dimitrov, I would put Berankis over Dimitrov if Berankis kept up his earlier form.

Dimitrov has been very, very disappointing considering the hype and the "talent" he has shown this year and in the past.

He is the worst possible young newcomer one could be - Raonic is the complete opposite and Tomic too, to an extent.

And that reflects in the rankings.

Great thread.. i gotta say Tomic for his delievery in Wimby, but the most solid one is probably Raonic.

I'm looking forward to see Tomic soon again... a guy that i think may be interesting up ahead is Kenny de Schepper, who is climbing every week now. Playing final in a CH today - again.

The Dog, Dolgopolov, would have to be on this list too since he came on the scene strong at the Aussie Open, and he is currently ranked 26 above Raonic.

Dolgo boy beat Cilic in Cilic's hometown for his first title....dang nice performance he should be on the list too but he a little too old!

When Dimitrov was playing Tsonga at Wimby, John McEnroe firmly stated his belief in the Dimitrov hype and talent. Out of all the upcoming guys, I firmly feel that Dimitrov is going to end up at #1.

On a side note..if Tomic actually has a successful career, I am going to lose hope in humanity because his footwork and movement is just horrendous.

I disagree, aside from the subtle ******baggery of Tomic from last year, I definitely see him being the best of the new comers. Not to mention, after watching a few highlights, his movement certainly isn't a liability. Not phenomenal by any stretch but serviceable, adequate to say the least. If you want to see the fine definition of bad movement, just check out Dimitrov.

Out of the 2 weekend winners, I really like Dolgo, but Gulbis has all the tools to be a top 10 player.

Take a look at their photos...could be twins, except for age difference. Also, both were born in Kiev...Kudla immigrated to US as a young child.

I agree with the point you are making, but it is clear that many people like to cheer for their countrymen. You should see the comments on any Djokovic video on youtube. The entire section is littered with comments like "Pride of Serbia" and " I am proud to be a Serb".

Has to be Raonic, no question. He went as high as #25. I think he wasn't even in the top 200 in January, and he climbed the rankings like crazy in less than 5 months. Dolgopolov and Raonic are close actually, but Raonic's rise was more spectacular.
