Paypal or certified check?

So I was texting a guy regarding his stringer on craigslist, and asked him if he was willing to ship it and I would cover the shipping cost and I wanted the transanction to be through paypal, I got the message back with him saying that he would need a certified check and waiting for the money be in his account before sending me the stringer.
So I am a bit hesitant as to why he would want me to use a certified check instead of PP, what do you guys think?

I wouldn't do it. I like paypal so I can use my credit card. That way I have buyer's protection.

Also, one reason they might be doing it is because Paypal now takes 2 weeks to clear funds to sellers. So he might not have the money to ship it out.

He could be the nicest guy in the world but I wouldn't do it if I were you. Absolutely no need for certified checks in paypal's age. (btw, it is even illegal in Germany for any bank but Bundesbank to certify a cheque) Why? Because it has the power of cash and is 100% safe for the seller (unless your bank defaults 24h after the cheque is certified) and you are left outside in the cold if something is wrong with the item you are buying.

Oh ok I didn't know PP had a two week waiting period. I guess I can try talking to the seller and convince him to use PP. I would mind waiting a couple of weeks before my item get shipped and also I like PP because of the extra protection against frauds, rather than him cashing in the check with me not able to dispute if I need to

I was also searching up certified checks and I found out that after he cash it I could not do anything if he decided to keep his stringer. I am located in the US but I understand about banks going into default; during the recession it could happen

It could but it is highly unlikely. I said that just to provide complete info.

Interesting. Since when if I may ask? I didn't know that. After I receive the funds, they are instantly available in my PP account and cca. 72h after they are settled in my Wells Fargo ch. account.

This is true

This is also true. In fact, as soon as you sign it over to him there is nothing you can do. I purchased something on fbay a few years ago and realized just after I send the money order that it was a scam. I called the issuing bank, told them the story, and they told me that they could not legally cancel the check or do anything to stop him from cashing it (which is exactly what he did about a week later).

You have absolutely no recourse with certified check / money order. None.

If you have an established fleabay and/or PP account, there is no waiting period for payment. And you can usually complete the transfer of funds out of PP into your linked bank account in 2 to 3 days.

Since you are doing a non-local CL deal with a complete stranger, it would be risky to send a check. It is like sending him cash. If he doesn't deliver, or if the stringer is not as described, you are SOL and without recourse. PP affords you some degree of recourse. You might make the case to him that PP is actually better for him as well as checks are often forged. If you use PP, make sure you send payment for goods and specify in the transaction notes exactly what you are purchasing.

If you have great feedback (and does he) on fleabay, it might make you both a bit more comfortable with the non-local CL deal. Even so, I would advise that if he insists on a check, you may be assuming too much risk. Is this an expensive stringer or a $50 used Klippermate? If it is a low budget deal, it might be worth the risk if the price is great. Otherwise, not so much.

If you decide to do the check, make sure the name the payee is the same as the addressee. Make sure the memo portion of the check specifies what the payment is for. Make sure you have the guy's home phone number, etc. Google his email address, phone number, home address, etc and see if he has any known issues. Is he an adult or a kid? If he seems to be a kid, I would not do the deal period. (I assume given your seeming cluelessness, that you are a kid. I think it is very bad idea for kids to buy stuff from strangers on the internet because you are simply too naive to be doing these sorts of deals.)

All that said, I have sent checks for CL deals but I had some sense the other party was a trustworthy adult. In all those cases, 6?, I received the goods in the stated condition. As well, I have sold things (rackets mostly) off CL non-locally and demanded checks, received them, let them fully clear and then sent the merchandise out. It really depends on the circumstances and how accurate your gut instincts tend to be.

If it is an entry level stringer, just save your money and buy a new one, or wait until you can find one locally or thru a seller you have some data on. Klippermates and Eagnas entry level machines are $150 to $100 plus shipping. Don't know if Alpha still makes an entry level table top/portable. If they do, they make good machines. But, they all will do the job. At least you will have a warranty and have some confidence your new machine won't have any undisclosed flaws. You can also put up a wanted ad here or on your local CL for a used machine as see if you get any hits.

This is my first time dealing with non-local CL seller so I'm a bit hesitant that he wanted a certified check instead of what most people would use (PP). I have a local seller selling a gamma but I am looking for a spring tension machine. If it was an entry level I wouldn't mind buying it brand new, but in this case it is a bit harder to find this machine. I texted him back asking why he prefered certified check instead of PP, and he said that he had some bad transactions when the buyer use the amount he owed to him and withdrawed it before it went through and the guy ended up losing the item. I guess I to move on and look for something else.

His no PP story/excuse makes no sense. As such, look for another deal. Person A pays PP. PP then pays person B. PP won't pay person B unless the funds have transferred to PP.

The best deal on a new crank machine would be at Eagnas. I have had several of their machines and never had a problem.

And, it is withdrew not withdrawed. :)

Yea that how I thought PP work, so I told him if he wants to do the deal through PP to let me know. And regarding the "withdrawed" that's what happened when I dont check what I type

Irregular verbs are always tough. :)

Anyway, take a look at Eagnas. Their prices have gone up lately but you can still get a new standup crank for about $400 plus shipping.

And, in addition to CL, check flea bay. Occasionally, there are some good deals on stringers there.

Everyone should be very careful when conducting internet commerce. I have one for you. I contacted a guy on CL locally. He was selling a car at a good/not great price. Turns out it had a salvage title which he did not mention until I asked him directly. Furthermore, the title wasn't in his name but he wanted the check made out to him not the entity to which the car was titled. He assured me this was all kosher. :) He was a pakistani. Of course, I said no thanks. I checked him out and his brother was involved in a grade fraud scandal at a local college. Fraud must run in the family.

Bottom line: Lots of lying jerks out there so be very careful and trust you instincts. Don't paint yourself into corners as recourse is a great option.

I'm now looking for other stringing machines, but I prefer something that is easy to maintain, spring tensioner, and also with a stand. I guess that isn't going to happen anytime soon. I actually bought my car off of CL from an Indian, he was very nice answered any questions and sold me his car at a reasonable price. So its been a year later and my car is still running smoothly as it can be. Just to show you how one rotten apple can spoil the good apples in the basket.
