Novaks Stringjob

Can't say exactly why P1 do this, but I'd do this so I don't tie-off the poly crosses on the gut mains (at the top); and it gives a sort of symmetry as the bottom cross (on this frame) would tie-off on a cross.

Thanks Paul,

So do you think these racquets have custom grommets that allow this tie off location, or would P1 just stretch out the grommet before stringing to allow two strings to fit??

common practice now to have a second tie off hole available ontop for you to be able to tie off on a cross. I know a lot of the wilson racquets have it but i'm guessing they do have to enlarge a 2nd hole for it to be possible on the head racquets.

Same as Federer's rackets but PI strings them both. They tie off the mains on the mains and the crosses on the crosses. Maybe that is a question for Drrakulie to ask PI while in Cincinnati.

In order to tie off mains on mains, crosses with crosses. Especially considering the gut and poly involved.

Hi,

If you check out the pic of Djokovic's racquet at this thread (the second set of pics are clearer than the first):

http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=389215&page=2

you will see that the crosses get tied off at the top at hole 10...essentially the 2nd cross. Any ideas as to why it would be done this way and not tied off at the regular tie off location at the head??

They do this to tie off cross with a cross string and main with a main string but at the same time it's done to shorten the distance of the tie off holes. When I did the Wilson string team Roman made us tie off on third cross all the time. If you notice for the last 2 crosses on the bottom he did the last cross then came back and did the second to last cross and tied off on the 3rd cross. Doing that shortened the tie off distance so you get a better tension and less tension loss.

I do this sometimes on a 2 piece when I have a babolat frame. I would do the last main or last cross then come back and do the second to last main or second to last cross to shorten the tie off hole distance; so I would have less tension loss

Also you don't want the gut mains to be the anchor string for a poly cross it can put a lot of stress on the gut strings and casue premature breakge from a mishit.

The Wilson/**** method skips from the third cross to the bottom cross before doing the second cross last, and tying off on the third cross, but this thread shows that P1 chose to do the third cross, then the second cross, and the bottom cross last before tying off on the third cross. For this racquet the spacing of the ninth (outermost) main and second cross makes tying the bottom cross to the third cross arguably preferable to tying off on the second cross.

The Wilson/**** method results in a hard weave for the second cross.

The Wilson/**** method creates a hard weave for the second cross, and going from the third cross to the bottom cross results in more string running outside the frame, so I don't know that it necessarily allows for less tension loss.

Great thread, thanks guys. im still not sure how to duplicate this 2 piece method to get the tie offs where they are on Novaks stick...

does it require a starting clamp?
could anybody help explain how they think his stringing process is done please?

A starting clamp would definitely help.

I think the key is to stretch out that tie off grommet prior to starting the crosses. Otherwise it really isn't that much different. Tension your first 3 crosses, then you should be able to tie off the first cross on the 2nd.

The same for the throat, but tension the 3rd last, then the last, then the 2nd last and tie off on the 3rd last.

Before you start opening up a grommet hole think about what is going to happen. There are many rackets with small tight fitting grommets out there and when you start tying off somewhere other than the recommended points you could ruin the grommet or worse the racket. Some rackets Wilson makes have very larger grommet holes and it is easy to tie off anywhere you want. Others like babolat have tie off points in non standard locations.

Best advice I can give you if you're stringing rackets for others is to use the factory recommendations.

For the way P1 strings Djokovic's racquets, you are correct about the first part (top crosses), but not quite on the second part (throat). At the bottom, tension the third cross, then the second cross, then the bottom cross and tie off on the third cross.

^^^^this is incorrect. His frame is strung regular on the crosses with the noted exceptions of the tie offs.

That's what I said, isn't it?

In response to someone else's mention of Wilson/**** I wrote that sure, Wilson/**** would go from the third cross to the bottom cross before doing the second cross and tying off on the third cross, but that looking at the racquet one can see that P1 does the bottom few crosses in their natural sequence before tying off on the third cross.

^^^ oops. Sorry, misread what you wrote. Trying to post on my iPhone after stringing a week here at Cincy with P1 has me hallucinating.

Carry on......

No worry, happy stringing!

Tournament stringing is enjoyable in some ways, but usually a decent workload, so I understand...
