So a big F U to the fans in Shanghai again. Why even bother having a tournament there? The fans know the top players aren't going to show up. Maybe relocation is necessary for this tournament.

He'll be there.

All he said was that he was tired. Nothing a couple of weeks rest won't fix. The press, as usual, exaggerated trying to create content when there was no story.

Then he would think " i need to play it to keep going for year end no.1 . i need the points ".

And he would play.

I hope he does. If Djokovic wins the China Open, and then wins Shanghai, Federer would need to at least win a few matches there otherwise he might be stuck at 299 weeks at #1, as his final total. Worth it to get to 300.

I would be surprised if he played, but it'd be dumb for him not to play. This is his last chance to get a sixth year end #1, the only remaining record Sampras has over him. He should make a final push and realize that 2013 may be another 2011 or worse for him. Unlikely to hit #1 again given the rise of Murray, consistency of Djoke (who has stealthily racked up 10 straight slam semis), and the return of Nadal.

Whether or not he plays Shanghai it would be highly unlikely for him to finish as YE#1 given that Djoko is 1,000 points ahead of him. Outperforming Djoko by 1,000 points this fall is a very tall order.

But as some folks have said, he need only win a match or two in Shanghai to reach 300 weeks at #1 which has a nice ring to it, so if he plays that could be a nice reward :)

I think he'll play, but I can't work out if he will be genuinely trying to contend the tournament, or if it's a mixture of pressure from Rolex and keeping his nose ahead in the rankings for that little bit longer.

This time of year, they're all tired, so he should manage a few manage a few matches without keeling over from exhaustion. The question would be whether or not he is genuinely concerned he'll struggle and the potential dent to his pride and image if he has an early exit compared with the pull of a record number of weeks at number one. I think the latter is stronger.
