Still weeks away but I am trying to plan a trip for the Tuesday and Wednesday semis and finals of the team nationals.

Any local info? Hotels near the location (ideally under 100 per night), places to vist while I am there (there is a lot of tennis so I may not make much else). I have driven past before but never stopped.

Cheers and hope to see some others from this at it.

There are not a ton of choices.

The Drury Inn isn't too bad. The best part is that you will get 2 draft beers and free hot food like hot dogs, chicken strips, mac and cheese and things like that from 5:30-6:30

The Holiday Inn Express and the Hampton Inn are both decent places there in Champaign but you are going to pay around $130 a night.

I would say your best bet would be to priceline/hotwire a room if you want to stay under $100.

Good luck and have fun.

Here is the schedule of events from Illinois's site. I'm planning on being there Saturday-Tuesday if all goes as planned so I'll probably see you out there.

All of the hotels off of South Neil Street near the intersection of Neil and Kirby Avenue are very close to the tennis complex (walking distance if it's nice, but maybe a 12-15 minute walk). These include Hawthorne Suites, I Hotel and Conference Center, Hilton Garden Inn, Homewood Suites. Chain restaurants around. Quick drive to downtown Champaign which has cooler bars and restaurants, and fairly close to Campustown (Green Street on campus).

Then there's all of the hotels in Champaign's mall area (the indoor mall, strip malls, book store, all the chain stores, Target, etc. like most cities) just north of 1-74 encompassing N. Prospect Ave., and N. Neil St. Those are probably a ten minute drive to the tennis complex. But near lots of (chain) shopping and food and movie theater. These include LaQuinta Inn, Super 8, Baymont Inn (fine when I stayed there), Courtyard Champaign, Country Inn and Suites, Wingate by Wyndham, Drury Inn.

Another cluster in north Urbana at 1-74 and North Lincoln- a pretty decent Holiday Inn, Sleep Inn, Comfort Suites, Super 8, Ramada. This actually isn't that far from the aforementioned mall area and still about 10 minute drive to the tennis complex.

Further east in Urbana at 1-74 and North Cummingham are Eastland Suites and Motel 6 (both south of I-74) and Hanland Inn & Suites (north of I-74). Again, just a couple of exits and 5 minutes to the mall area and maybe 10-12 min to the tennis complex. My parents stayed at Eastland for my law school graduation and it was nothing fancy, but completely fine. But, that was 9 years ago.

And if you keep going south on South Neil Street (south of the aforementioned S. Neil and Kirby area) you will reach the suburb of Savoy and there's a couple hotels, including a Best Western and Senator's Inn. That's probably a 7 minute drive from the tennis complex.

Right in the center of C-U on University Avenue one of main east-west streets that goes all the away across the cities is the Hampton Inn - centrally located - close to downtown Champaign, downtown Urbana, campus, the mall area and about 6 minutes from the tennis complex. Just slightly east of the Hampton Inn on University is America's Best Inn.

And still a few more around I think (haven't lived here for a while).

Did they ever build a hotel right in Campustown around Green Street? (I don't think so).

And, is that rag tag, faux-chalet hotel thing (Lincoln Inn i think) still open downtown Urbana. I went to a law school function there and it was pretty dirty and rundown, but it may have been rehabbed.

Nothing is going to be THAT far away. Metro C-U isn't that big.

And, finally, if you're looking for deals and can't find any in C-U, don't forget cities nearby. Mahomet is about 15 minutes west on I-72 (small town, probably a couple hotels). Decatur is about 35 minutes west on I-72 and has lots of hotels right off of I-72 to the north heading into the suburb of Forsyth (Decatur can be sketchy, but that area is fine). And, Bloomington-Normal is 40-45 minutes northeast on 1-74, another college town, State Farm headquarters, decent sized area of around 150,000 has a full range of numerous hotels, similar to Champaign. Danville, a city of 33,000 is 30 minutes to the east on I-74 and would have several hotels, which may be cheaper. Finally, Rantoul, a small city (14,000) on I-57, 20 minutes north of Champaign, will have maybe a few hotels, probably cheaper.

Yes great stuff, Im still in limbo as I may have to be in California. If not I do plan to go but the Indiana doubles team of Juneau/Monette qualified and play on the 23rd so that adds another twist.

I believe they have some but not too many livestreams from them.

Well silly, I am going there with my boys. Does those android app work well in finding good restaurants ? which one do you use ? I just hate ending up with bad food in a place I don't know. I am not looking for fancy place or anything but just good Italian or Chinese place we can have good dinner in.

Do they have good restaurants there ?

Papa Dells mentioned above for true Chicago style Pan pizza.

Flat Tops for Asian stir fry, you load the bowls and they whip it up in the wok for you

Several excellent BBQ's in the area from simple sandwich from Lil Porgy's to full spreads. Black Dog has a thousand different ales, and Hickory Rivers is good as well.

Too many Mexican eateries to count.

The Rib Eye for an excellent steak.

All the generic TGI Fridays, Chillis, Ruby Tuesdays and all the others that are similar.

Good, yes. Great, I'm not sure. C-U isn't really a fine dining or foodie type of town overall. I was a student there, so was just trying save money and don't really know the restaurant dining scene that well. My impression was that overall, it's very typical Midw'strn, but it is a college town, so there's independent cafes, organic bakeries, vegeterian restaurants, a variety of ethnic eatieres (for example, a really good halal Indian restaurant had opened up right before I left), sushi joints, and some local, non-chain restaurants.

So, there is good stuff there, just not as much, IMO, as a big city, or even some other college towns of C-U's size. Some really nice bars and microbrews have opened up since I've left and they might have some really good pub grub - fresher, more interesting than a chain.

I remember Radio Maria being very good

Eat at Papa Dels on Green Street. It has better Chicago deep dish than anywhere in Chicago.

As a Chicagoan who has eaten at Papa Dels on multiple occasions, this is just ridiculously wrong.

I haven't been to a great restaurant in Champaign-Urbana, but it does have some great restaurants when it comes to bang for the buck.

Empire for Chinese, Dos Reales for Mexican, and Black Dog for BBQ would be my three recommendations for good, cheap food. Black Dog especially.

So, are you a Gino's East or Giordano's afficianado, or something different?

I lived in Chicago and Evanston for 11 years and never really took to Chicago style pizza (I'm origially from Minnesota). It's delicious, but SO rich, and just sits in your stomach, ugh. I always thought of it as "pizza casserole" lol. So, I'd eat it if it was at some gathering, or if I was going out with people who wanted it, but after my initial exposure to it, I never really ever chose it.

My favorite deep dish was probably Carmen's in Evanston, and when I arrived in 1991, there were two Carmen's within 4 blocks of each other downtown Evanston, which I always thought was weird. Anyway, a place called Gigio's in Evanston became my go-to pizza joint, for NY style pizza by the slice.

Giordano's is my favorite of the chains, though I also think of it as stuffed pizza rather than true deep dish. Lou's has the best pure deep dish of the chains. Art of Pizza makes the best deep dish pizza in the city (this was once my little secret, but word has gotten out over the last few years).

MUCH to my consternation as a beer drinker, Champaign has become sort of mini-beer drinker's parasdise since I left after law school (2004). The bar scene is much better and much more diverse and there's a number of great beer bars, which have lots of interesting taps and bottles - variety is pretty amazing. Why couldn't they have been around when I was there?

1. Radio Maria (Champaign) - tapas bar, cocktail bar, and beer bar - this actually was around when I was in school. Cool place. I think you can sample all 25+ taps for 40 bucks

2. Blind Pig (Champaign)

3. Seven Saints (Champaign)

5. Black Dog (Urbana)

5. Crane Alley (Urbana)

How accepting is Champaign of alternative lifestyles?

What's the "alternative"? Marijuana/drug use, gay/lesbian, alternative religion?

It's a fairly liberal/tolerant place, as many college towns are. But, it's certainly not Berkeley or Cambridge. Solidly "blue" politically, though obviously the range of liberalness within "blue" is pretty broad.

So, I guess "fairly" or "generally" accepting would my vague answer. But, I lived there as a grad student, so my universe was the University and Campustown, downtown Champaign, and I lived in Urbana (the People's Republic of). In that sphere, it was as I've described.
