The countdown continues. This time a blast from the past.
Also a bit of payback for 2004. Forehand was on Fire.

Thank you for that! he was passing up the Wazoo! Fun watching Roddick come in knowing he's going to to get passed.
I tend to think of 2011 as Djok's year because he beat Rafa 7 times straight and won 3 slams, but forget how good Rafa actually was that year too. He made all slam finals, as I recall.

He was destroyed by Ferrer in AO 1/4 final in straight sets.

Now that it seems that Novak will be missing the summer hardcourt season and perhaps the rest of the year, the match in Madrid has become even more important and almost symbolic. It gave Nadal the opportunity to meet him this year and finally break the losing streak. It would have been nice to see more meetings between them now that Nadal is playing much better then in the last couple of years. Who knows when the next meeting will come...

Legend
Rafael Nadal Has A New Richard Mille Watch

The year was 2005, a fresh-faced Spaniard who barely past his 18th birthday reigned supreme in clay courts worldwide, smashing his opponents into submission and winning 24 consecutive singles matches along the way to breaking Andre Agassi’s Open Era record of consecutive match wins for a male teenager. His name was Rafael Nadal and he would go on to become a household name.

When the decade was crying out for a worthy challenger to the all-conquering Roger Federer, it was Nadal who usurped the topseeded Federer at the semi-final game of the French Open. The score? 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. But Nadal didn’t stop there. He went on to win the final and was crowned the French Open men’s singles champion. The victory was his first career Grand Slam title. A more remarkable feat was that the entry into the French Open was the first time Nadal had participated in the tournament.

Subsequently, Nadal earned the moniker “King of Clay” after coming out on top on numerous times in tournaments such as the French Open and the Monte Carlo Masters. He dominated and outlasted his competitors on the dusty surfaces. However, the plaudit was seen as somewhat of a backhanded compliment. Early in his career, he would defeat his fiercest rivals on clay courts only to come second best to the same contestants on other surfaces. But Nadal was determined to evolve to become a well-rounded player, drawing upon his fortitude and inner strength.

He is a gifted athlete. As a young boy, he was equally adept at football and the racquet sport. At age 12, he was forced by his father to make the painful decision to choose between football and tennis. He chose to pursue the latter. Three years later, he turned professional. By 17, he had his first one-on-one success against Federer. So it was evident that he was never short of talent and that it was not the impediment that was stopping him from taking the next step to conquering grass and hard courts; it was about technique and experience adapting to the demands of playing on them.

In the Wimbledon final of 2008, finally, he was not to be denied as he trumped Federer in five sets, winning his first grass court Grand Slam title. He then became the first man to win Grand Slam titles on clay, grass and hard courts in the same year in 2010 when he clean swept the French Open, the Wimbledon and the US Open singles titles.

Standing firm in the face of adversity is what Nadal has done throughout his career. He has had to defeat greats like Federer to cement his spot in the tennis folklore. This is a noble trait shared by watchmaker Richard Mille. Despite only founded in 1999, what Richard Mille lacks in history, it makes up the ground through unwavering boldness and innovative spirit.

Within its portfolio are innovative materials such as Quartz TPT, Graph TPT, NTPT, among others. They are used not just for the sake of showcasing its savoir-faire but to increase the watches’ durability in all conditions. That has contributed tremendously to its respected standing today. Richard Mille is dubbed the secret billionaire’s handshake because it commands appreciation and recognition among serious watch collectors.

Their collective story started in 2008 when Richard Mille himself was introduced to Nadal through a mutual friend. Although they immediately got on, watch was not Nadal’s passion, much less wearing one during a match.

“But when Mille proposed to make me a watch that was light, robust and comfortable, I was interested in his initiative, although I was reluctant to wear it on the court!” recalls Nadal. “He came to my house in Majorca and we were on the same wavelength. As soon as I tried the watch, I loved it. It was like a second skin for me.”

“But the relationship between Mille and myself is more than just a watchmaking partnership,” Nadal explains before adding, “he is a really positive person and wants to drive the watchmaking industry forward, not just sit back and enjoy his success.”

“He seeks excellence, which I respect. In tennis, I always try to be better and I work hard for that. Richard Mille has also been working alongside me for several years to support the Rafa Nadal Foundation, which helps disadvantaged children and teenagers,” says Nadal.

After nine years of a fruitful relationship comes the birth of RM 27-03 Tourbillon Rafael Nadal, limited to only 50 pieces worldwide. The watch is not just an embodiment of technical mastery but also of aesthetic excellence. The colour scheme of the RM 27-03 Tourbillon Rafael Nadal, with the striking red and yellow hues of its Quartz TPT case, pays homage to Nadal native country, Spain. The intense burst of colour is achieved by impregnating fine layers of silica just 45 microns thick with tinted resin according to a proprietary process developed in Switzerland that stacks the filaments in layers before heating them to 120°C.

When it comes to releasing a new shade of Quartz TPT, achieving colour stability compliant with Reach standards while resolving issues of biocompatibility and durability represents a tremendous display of prowess on the part of the engineers at Richard Mille and North Thin Ply Technology (NTPT). And once the composite is produced, there remain many hours of milling and finishing operations to produce the case and components.

The quartz fibres used in this case, which is water resistant to 50m, offer a very advantageous strength/weight ratio, as well as being anallergic and highly resistant to UV rays. But the main innovation of this extraordinary watch lies in the capacity of its tourbillon calibre to withstand shocks up to 10,000 Gs. This new threshold has been attained thanks to years of research and development and countless hours of testing, particularly ‘pendulum impact testing’ which simulates the linear acceleration that occurs due to sudden movements or shock to the wearer.

This virtual indestructability is vouchsafed by assembly of the ultralight tourbillon calibre on the skeletonised unibody baseplate of Carbon TPT with a precision to the nearest micron, while the reduced number of components in this configuration permits additional weight savings, lightening the whole watch.

The rapid winding barrel provides an unvarying flow of energy for the full 70 hours of running time. The magnificent finishing of the RM 27-03 calibre presents hand-polished tapered anglage and graceful satin surfaces that set off the sparkle of finely microblasted elements. The RM 27-03 Tourbillon Rafael Nadal offers an impressive play of volumes. Highly stylised, the sharp, streamlined curves of the skeletonised bridges encircling the barrel, the great wheel and the mechanical winding tourbillon beating at 3Hz together evoke the forward-facing head of a bull.

A symbol of Spain, this animal is also Nadal’s chosen emblem. As a playful nod, winding and hand setting are conducted using a torque-limiting crown of Quartz TPT in the shape of a tennis ball.

I'm mad about Djokovic tanking to Thiem in RG to avoid Nadal. Nadal could have also tanked to Sock in RG 2015 but he didn't do that, despite being in the worst form of his life.

Im sorry, I dont agree to any of that.
Of course you can disagree. This is just my opinion. I usually want to believe in fair sport, but Djokovic's RG and Wimbledon 1/4 finals performances really looked like "chickening" from meeting Nadal and Federer when they are in good form. (unlike 2015-2016)

Rafa lost matches like that being injured too.

I don't believe in Djokovic's injuries anymore. When Nadal is injured he is missing big tournaments. But Djokovic is having some "miracle injuries" that heal exactly when he needs them to. For a player who complains so many times about injuries he missed very few tournaments. I will never forget how in Madrid 2013 against Dimitrov he was 7-6 4-2 down, then took a medical time out and cried that he can barely walk. A few minutes later-he started running all around the court, faster than ever. From this moment the crowd in Madrid started supporting Dimitrov very hard by the way, they didn't like how Djokovic acted. Dimitrov missed the lead and lost the second set. Somehow still won the match though. That's only one example of many I can bring. So...I will believe his injury only if he will skip USO.

I think that Madrid win against Djok gave Rafa the confidence he needed to lift his game toyet another level. I wanted a healthy Djok back and playing for two reasons--I think Rafa might still beat him because Rafa has changed his game since Djok had the long winning streak; and two--Djok in top form might actually be better at beating Fed now than Rafa, because Fed got in Rafa's head.

Rafael Nadal talks to Juan Monaco in Ibiza about starting a family, world No1 ranking and more on Argentinean TV show
Rafael Nadal appeared on Juan Monaco's TV show while they were together in Ibiza, where the Spaniard talked marriage, tennis, Roger Federer and more. Watch the video below.

26th July 2017

BFFs: Pico and Rafa.
Rafael Nadal and Juan Monaco go to Ibiza, hang out on a boat, and chat life, tennis and everything in between. Sounds like a great TV show, right? Well it actually is!
The two long-time friends spent time together in Ibiza recently, where Monaco, who recently retired and is a co-host on the Argentinean talk show ‘Con Amigos Asi‘ got to interview Nadal, who enjoyed some R&R at sea following his Wimbledon fourth round exit to Gilles Muller.

Monaco asked Nadal if he saw the remainder of this season as a head-to-head battle with Roger Federer. Nadal is No1 in the ATP Race to London but Federer is close behind, having claimed a second major of the season, winning Wimbledon earlier this month.
The pair of veterans have hit peak form in 2017, rolling back the years, and have split the first three majors of the season between them.
“The truth is, I always follow my own path,” Nadal told Monaco.
“It’s true that we (Roger and I) are better prepared to compete for nice things at the end of the year but it depends on what we’re able to do from now until the end of the year. We’ll have to wait and see.

“The person who will be able to keep his high level for a longer period of time will have more options to fight for the world No1 ranking. But the same can be said of (Andy) Murray or (Novak) Djokovic and many others who are up there. Maybe they haven’t had the best six months this year but they are also candidates.”
Monaco got Nadal to talk about his private life and whether the Mallorcan was thinking of starting a family soon with his long-time girlfriend Maria Francisca Perello, now that he’s passed the 30-year-old mark. “You’re older than I am,” Nadal laughed, referring to the fact that Monaco himself is 33 yet unmarried. Nadal added: “I would love to have children, boys, girls… I’m a person who loves kids and I’m a family guy.”

Nadal in Ibiza

While he has no immediate plans for starting family, Nadal says he imagines he would do so after he retires from tennis as he feels the life of too much travel is not necessarily an ideal one for kids.

Switching to tennis, Monaco asked Nadal how he’s been able to return to his best level this season, and claim a 10th Roland Garros and sit atop of the ATP Race.
“The first thing is to maintain your ambition to do so, that’s the key,” said the world No2. “Also my body, for a few months now, has been (cooperating), without that, it would have been practically impossible (to compete at a high level). “And the truth is, last year I was at a high level before I got injured. I was in a position to go to Roland Garros and try and win it. I’m not saying I would have won it, but I was ready to compete to win it, but it wasn’t meant to be. 2015 was a tough year mentally but after that I believed I could recover my level.”

Does Nadal find himself being extra careful now of his body compared to when he was younger?
“Obviously I am being more careful now than I was when I was younger. When I was younger, we didn’t know that, as young ones, we’re complicated and are doing a terrible job at taking care of ourselves. As you get older, you have the choice to be more conscious of everything needed to try to keep doing what you like,” he explained.

Rafa told Pico he is very grateful for being famous and doesn't take it for granted, knows that's all thanks to his fans.
Pico talks about knowing Rafa for long time, since he was 15 yrs old. Says he is down to earth & still has the same friends from childhood.
Rafa talked w/ Pico about his relationship w/ Maria saying that he knows he is in his 30s but as long as he plays tennis won't start family.
Rafa says he wants to have a few kids whom he really adores. It's not so easy for kids when they can't see parents who travel so much.
Pico's question was more oriented how it is hard for players to have kids. A humble Rafa thinks 1stly about how hard that must be for kids.
Also Rafa told Pico he loves the place where he lives cause, loves his sea, playing golf and he is a huge football fan.
Despite Real Madrid sold Morata and James, Rafa still thinks his fav club has many strong players. Thinks it would be wise to sign Mbappé.
In today's interview @picomonaco did a really good job. He talked with so many passion about his friendship with @RafaelNadal. Loved it!

Lolololololol

Rafa Nadal just as a name is worth millions and millions. Even Federer wants to send his kids there.

Agree. It would be crazy not to use the name recognition of Nadal, and it makes sense to name it that way.

Good to hear ;)
That itself says a lot. Rafa fans much better :D:D:D All saints hahahahaha:cool::p

I am a Rafa fan and I am probably one of the bad ones with criticizing players. But not Federer, no way. I have too much respect for his career and play. That's the way it should be imo. Give credit where it is due, otherwise you can seem irrational or not a full tennis fan ignoring the best quality tennis.

Does he know Why RAFA lost at Wimby to old balding fellow named Muller? and why he was no where to be found while that was going on ?

Too many unforced errors in the final set and didn't convert break point opportunities. It's frustrating because generally he returned well at this years wimbledon and he was in excellent form there.

No fan w integrity would go into other fan threads to spread negativity. No class at all. Respect!

Unfortunately, I have done that :(

Lol, his kids could get lessons for free from the GOAT! ;)

But I think somewhere he said that he'd be okay if they didn't want to go into tennis, he's not going to like force them to play if they don't want to.

Federer has said that. He has said some quite funny things about teaching his daughters. He said they don't follow his instructions properly and don't think he is a good teacher lol.

Have you seen the opening of the Academy? Federer on stage for an hour. He(humble as he is) told Rafa he would be at the opening and contribute :p its on youtube. Federer so nice, leaves all the nasty Fans here to shame. Fed fans has a lot to learn from "their master' :)

Agree, as fans we should have mutual respects the same way the top 5 respect each other. Fed and Nadal fans unfortunately behave the same way Gulbis and Batista Agut behave with each other lol.

Looks like rafas kept busy after Wimbledon. Can't wait for Canada now.

Another famous & charismatic Spanish sporting bachelor is getting married next week, pro golfer Sergio Garcia! More pressure on Rafa to pop the question?? :)

There should be pressure! Lol, I think he is mad not to have married Xisca ten times over. Of the Big 4, Rafa has the best taste. She is so beautiful and whenever I have heard her interviewed she is incredibly intelligent but above all has an excellent personality.

Rafa is back to work after spending his holidays in Ibiza (the third largest of the Balearic Islands) and on his yacht Beethoven. Rafa named his yacht 'Beethoven' in honor of his grandfather Rafel Nadal, who was a musician/conductor (died in 2015). His fellow islanders gave him the nickname 'Beethoven'. :)

Is Monaco's TV show all about sports? A talking heads interview kind of thing? Just seems unusual for a tennis player to have a TV show--though I'm all for it!
