In my opinion the BU can be used only when your original pick wins with a WO or when your original pick withdraws.

If you pick a player that you already used because you forgot or something like that (and you don't change your pick in time), sorry, you are out.

I'm with @sosa09 on this one, original pick and backup pick stand as they are unless the person specifically changes it - the only time a pick is assumed is when you've reached the semis and only have a default pick left for the final.
