The USTA reported a record 957,387 spectators attended the 2023 U.S. Open during Fan Week (i.e. the qualifying rounds) and the two weeks of the main draw. The combined attendance for the event set a new, all-time record for the U.S. Open. It was also the first time a Grand Slam event attracted over 950,000 people during an entire tournament.

My girlfriend and I personally accounted for 3 of those 950k+ fans (we both attended the first Thursday, and I was also there the first Friday).

Good for them! That being said other than covid all these slams post new record attendance every year. They add more seats and venues and bla bla. But still its nice that alot of people went!

I don't have numbers for the entire tournament (qualifying + main draw) for previous U.S. Opens, but based on anecdotal evidence, in particular what sounded like a large increase in the number of fans attending during Fan Week/qualifying and sellouts for every day of the main draw, this year's U.S. Open attendance was particularly impressive.

I know from attending the first Thursday (2nd round) and first Friday (3rd round) that the crowds did seem bigger this year relative to past years, especially relative to the equivalent day of the tournament in past years. (I've attended both equivalent days of the tournament multiple times previously.) The Thursday crowd was particularly nuts relative to a "normal" first Thursday; it was crazy packed (or I saw crazy lines) at times on Grandstand, Court 17, and some of the outer courts (Courts 5, 11, and 12 in particular). And I've never seen queueing to get into Armstrong Stadium before the 4th round previously, but that definitely happened during the Tiafoe/Mannarino match on the first Friday.
