4.5 playing in opens

well guys this weekend i played on another open division here in the south. im form california witch i played a lot of 4.5 tournaments when i was a 4.0 because i always liked competition it doesn't matter if i win or lose , i guess for me is all about the experience i gain in every match, using different techniques on different players. sometimes i won sometimes i lost, more winnings than loses haha.
now i consider myself a strong 4.5 i have heavy top spin on back hand and forehand and a great kick serve. i been playing in the open division since there is not to many 5.0 division tournaments and its just amazing the experience i got playing in an open, there is so many good players and just makes me wana practice with my ball machine everyday so i can comeback next week or next month and try to get a better result.
in my first open i got spanked 6 0 6 2 by a 5.5 player in the first round. i was trying to play as hard as i could and trying to keep the ball in court but he was just good at pushing the ball in until i made a mistake and he will put the ball away. i learn that technique from him and it worked on the second set. thats how i got those 2 games i broke his serve twice just playing him with heavy topspin and making him make the error and just take advantage of it. he still killed me tho .
this weekend i went to another open. this time i played with a 5.0 player. guys it was a tough match. i was down 4.1 he was playing very good i was making a lot of errors but i came back and we went on a tie break he won the first set 12 10 . i was playing with fear trying to hard to keep the ball in and i wasnt playing my game and going for winners. second set was same thing he was up 4.1 i was playing the same until for some reason i was ok im gona lose so im just gonna try to hit my shots just like hitting my ball machine and suddenly we tied 4.4 and i came back to win the set 7.5 . 3rd set was a tie break and i won 10.7 , it was an awesome feeling my first win playing an open as a 4.5 the match was over 2 hours and my body was in bad shape i was cramping in 6 different spots legs forearm even in my stomach i was drinking a lot of water idk how i got so dehydrated i had to stretch for an hour and rest since my second round match was schedule for noon and my match was over at 10.20 in the morning.

2 round match was another 5.0 player young tennis couch pretty cool guy. while warming up he saw me cramping up and stuff and he gave me couple of minutes to stretch and stuff very cool.
we start playing and it was a tied match 3.3 and he broke me 4.3 after that was tryng my hardest to keep playing but he notice i was tired and started to give me drop shots and just making me run all over the court , very smart guy , i probably would have done the same haha. he ended up biting me 6.3 6.3

my hole body is sore from yesterday im kinda glad i lost. i was gona be hurting today if i would have played another match. the best advice to give you guys to play with those dudes that have heavy shots and play hard is to play your game, they hate slow high balls makes them make errors and when u get the chance you can hit your winner and get the point. patience is the key at least for me.

in 2 weeks im gona try to play another open. i will let you know guys how it goes.

btw sorry for my grammar im not born in the US lol

Great job !!!

You sound like a great competitor

Yes if your a strong 4.5 and competitive u should play with big boys in open

What areas of your game are u trying to work on??

Is 4.5 tourneys too easy for you ??
They are hard to find
Mostly 4.0 or open

Bionic slice

Semi-Pro
Congrats on challenging yourself and getting a win. I applaud you for wanting to improve and adapt your game more. Great Job!!

Its kind of weird, at the pro level players aren't playing multiple matches normally in the same day unless they play dubs or mixed. I have always struggled with match #3 or match #4 in a tourney and my body would break down. When i played tourneys, i would do triathlon training for about 3 to 5 weeks and was in good shape but my body would break down usually cramping and dehydration.

Thanks dgold44
Mainly improve my footwork and condition , i have the shots . And probably lose the 20 pounds i put on in the holidays haha.

4.5 got to a point that it was easy i guess. I started winning tournoments . And some people will look me bad like i was a 5 or so . But im not. The couches i played they told me i was a legit 4.5 . I always wanted to see whats out there . So i can always improve and maybe copy strategies

Yes just do a lot of wind sprints then and some hill running or jogs

I myself am trying to improve my serve to start playing 4.5 in spring or fall
I usually win at 4.0 if I play well

No open in this life time !!
Those guys are crazy good and every point u have to earn

Man i have a pretty good serve strong slice and flat serve acording to my pure aero play. Stronges fastest serve was a138mph idk if is true but what is funny everytime i was serving hard the 5.0 player will block the shot and the return will be a winner for him because of the momentum of the ball is all about placement. After that i started to use my second serve as my first . Strong high kick serve in his back hand and he had way more issues than my flat fast serve haha

Don't let Startzel see this or he will accuse the 5.5 of not playing real tennis.

Congratulations on a great effort and your bravery in entering Open. I think I'd like to try that just to say I've done it; sort of a "Tennis Bucket List".

You may be surprised at what you get in an open tourney. I played in a local rec tourney and, by accident, registered at the open level. I played a guy who claimed to be a 5.0+ reasonably close. I suspect he was a 4.5 based on his play. I lost 4 & 4 but I found some confidence in that loss. I played up at 4.5 a year and a half ago and went 0-9 across singles & dubs. I asked a couple guys on the 4.5 team what I needed to do to compete and they told me a weekly lesson and at least 3 practices a week. I wish I had the time to play that much. I'll be at 4.0 until my kids are a little older. But I may enter that same tourney again.....this time at 4.5

Sometimes hitting it harder just makes it come back harder.

Congrats on competing and getting a win. I love to hear these types of stories about people willing to lose in order to get better rather than the guys who stay at 3.5 their whole life and get mad about line calls.

That seems a bit extreme. Very helpful if you have the time and $. But I suspect it depends a lot on your own athletic ability: maybe their advice applies more to the average person. You need to judge where you are in the continuum. Maybe a weekly or bi-monthly lesson + one practice/week will be enough to push you to the next level.

It also depends on how strong of a 4.0 you are. The stronger you are, the less it will take to push through.

Good to know. Not sure if our section's lack of various Ntrp levels is also a factor in my league & tourney experiences. As far as leagues, we have USTA 18+ 3.5, 4.0 & 4.5. That be it except for the senior (65+) bracket. They tried to organize a few 40+ 4.0 & 4.5 leagues but couldn't get enough players. I notice more than a few 5.0 teaching Pro's in the 4.5 league. Tourneys are worse. Most have only open & 40+ open. I have to travel an hour & half to find a good tournament with Ntrp levels.

Btw, Franco if you consistently hit a 138mph serve, you should try some challengers tourneys! Top tour level players, like Fed, don't even crank that speed often!!

im not sure i hit that . thats just the pure aero play app or babolat app that records speed of the serve and shots , its a nice app but no sure how accurate is it.

4.5 has some really strong players who could be in 5.0 but it is also full of 4.0s who are trying to play up
Most 4.0 tourneys are more like iron man because the draws can be huge

I have seen some excellent 4.5 doubles teams
The guys looked really out of shape but all had high skill levels
They looked very good
