Bodo in 2007: Novak the "perfect player"

The Perfect Player, Revisited

Pretty prescient stuff.

"But today I’m here to talk about the theoretical Perfect Player, and I see him in the physical container of Novak Djokovic.

...

Trunk rotation is a big thing for me, has been every since I first saw the best practitioner, Miloslav Big Cat Mecir – a guy who did not appear to run (he was always just there, waiting for the ball) and who did not appear to swing a racquet hard enough to break an electric-eye beam."

Points for the Mecir reference. Mecir would have been a great if he weren't more interested in fishing than tennis.

Jim Courier hardly rotated his trunk on his forehand at all, one of the biggest forehands in tennis history.

Anyone can be cherry-picked to sound like a genius. Day-in-day-out, Bodo is an over-rated sports writer with surprisingly little insight into tennis.

If you want sensationalism, quotes, and bad psychoanalysis, he is your man. Tennis is just not his forte.

I don't like Bodo. He is not very objective. I do read his stuff when I have nothing better to do. I shouldn't be even commenting about him... not worth it.

He sucks. I don't even know how he managed to get his job.

Bodo is a good writer but very opinionated. He slam dunks his points, there is a finality in his statements that dares you to think any different.

When it comes to sports we have two other types of writing. One is who uses words like a paint to create a pleasant picture of the events(Foster Wallace) or a logical analysis of what has happened or reasons for what may be happen next ( Christopher Clarey).

Bodo is neither. He seems to write to please himself, or to show off.

True that. Bodo is an idiot, and nothing he says about tennis should be taken seriously.

Of the 1400+ posts you've made since April of this year (very high score on the need-a-life meter BTW) not a single one is worth the bandwidth it takes up.

What's with the ragging on Bodo? He's opinionated, sure, and I can hardly say I agree with most of his notions, but the dude knows his tennis - he's been an analyst for a very long time. The guy I don't really care for is Collins, who's definitely lost something on his fastball and takes snubs very childishly.

That's the thing though. Opinions are dime a dozen. Even NadalAgassi has them. Insight is a different story.

Unfortunately, his experience has not made him better. As has been remarked often on these boards, Bodo gravitates toward the sensational interview quotes, the ham-handed "human" backstory, and some after-the-fact bandwagon-jumping. When it comes to act of describing the actual game of tennis, its technique, the dance of racquet and ball, the techniques of different players, he is surprisingly pedestrian.

The guy I don't really care for is Collins, who's definitely lost something on his fastball and takes snubs very childishly.
Collins is old now, a little senile, and somewhat irritating, but IMO, this guy surely knows his tennis.

2007 was Djokovic's break out year... So for a dude to call him on having that great year was just reporting what happened.
