Captains question...Just wondering

How many of you who been captains of USTA teams have asked someone to play on your team and they accepted and then later they say the following phrase

"Oh yeah, I'm sorry....I forgot that I told captain X that I would play for them"

Whenever my friends and I hear of someone doing this we just laugh because 99% of the time it's a lie. Just wondering how many of you guys have had this happen.

Heh, yeah, it is a lie.

I've never had it happen to me, at least not that I can remember.

But honestly, just let it roll...don't let it bother you at all. Figure it is *their* loss, right? :)

Yes, I've it happen. The only thing that bothers me is if I've either turned down or not recruited other players if I was close to the roster limit. Otherwise, I figure it's the type of player we'd be better off not having on the team.

Also..

Yeah, you gotta love the captains who try to "recruit" all the best players from other teams. They always do it on the sly. hehe
One local captain offers to pay state and local league dues for players that are wanted.

No, hasn't happened. I wouldn't sweat it.

It's like trying to hang onto a husband who doesn't want you. In all cases, you're better off without him.

Or so I've been told. :)

I do believe there is more than 1 type of player out there that you might run into on this thing. I do believe that many (most?) of them are lying, I have run into a few that are just organizational messes and really don't know what they've committed to OR believe for some reason they can play on two teams. I know this as these are the same people who have trouble making it to the matches!

Anyway - there seems to be a lot of politics in building teams, especially at clubs where you are building more that 1 team from the same 'pool' of people. My advice to both players and captains is to be upfront about your decisions and make sure you know what you want out of a team. I'm not getting paid for this afterall!!
