LONDON | Wed May 18, 2011 1:48am BST

LONDON (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic's 37-match winning streak since the start of the year is already more impressive than the record 42 consecutive wins posted by John McEnroe in 1984, the American said Tuesday.

World number two Djokovic has enjoyed complete domination so far this year by winning seven titles, including the Australian Open, four Masters Series events and ending world number one Rafa Nadal's supremacy on clay.

Should the Serbian reach the final of next week's French Open, he will edge ahead of McEnroe's 1984 streak, which was ended in the final at Roland Garros by arch rival Ivan Lendl.

"For me personally it brings back memories of '84," former world number one and seven-times grand slam champion McEnroe told reporters in a conference call Tuesday.

"I'm quite excited at the timing of this because he could break my record at the French Open. I've followed his progress and to put it mildly it's been quite amazing to see how much confidence he is playing with.

"Records are made to be broken but at the same time now there is more competition, more athleticism, and deeper fields and more depth in the sport so his record is even more impressive than mine.
"Also in '84 the Aussie Open was played at the end of the year so I hadn't played a major when I put that run together. My first major was the French where the streak was broken.

"It's impressive given he came in number three and to dominate Federer and Nadal the way he has, to see what he has done, it's a little surprising."

Djokovic outclasssed Nadal for the second week in succession to win the Rome Masters Sunday, having also beaten the Spanish claycourt king in Madrid the week before.

The Serb, whose total streak is 39 when taking into account his two wins in the Davis Cup final at the end of 2010, has also beaten former dominant force Roger Federer three times already this year and stands on the brink of taking over as the world number one from Nadal.

However, McEnroe, who is playing on the Champions Tour which culminates in the Aegon Masters at London's Royal Albert Hall later this year, has a word of warning for Djokovic.

"Rafa is certainly tougher to beat in a best of five match," the American great said. "Going back to '84, I beat Lendl twice on clay going into the French then got up two sets and lost in five. Certainly Novak has to be careful because Nadal fights right to the end."

 wow, imagine if Djokovic plays Nadal in the final, has a 2 set lead and loses in 5...talk about history repeating!

I think because they both wear their emotions on their sleeve. I think Jmac liked the impressions and also the post-match US Open night hit they had.

If Djok goes up 2 sets to love he will win.
Based on 4 last encounters Novak spends less energy vs Nadal and he is no quitter either.

They had bad chemistry actually... up to that night in USO when he jumped in the court and hit with him after the match.

He is cool about most everybody but also has made some bold comments about others as well.

That first match wasn't on clay. McEnroe's victories over Lendl on clay were at 1984 Forest Hills and the 1984 World Team Cup. Forest Hills was har-tru, green clay and the WTC was European red clay.

I think JMac just appreciates great players and that is a good thing to see. When Fed rose Mac was kissing his ass and then did the same to Nadal. Now it's Djoker's turn.

I believe it's a rite of passage for the top players. Their butts kissed by St. Johnny Mac.

It is so strange that Mac is the exact opposite of so many past tennis greats that is so quick to defend their accomplishment (oh yea it was harder then, competition harder, yada yada yada) when in fact he played in a golden age of tennis.

Fed, Nadal and Nole are current players, right? When he give praises to today's tennis, he's praising to ALL the players. So Mac is consistent in his opinion.

McEnroe always does this type of stuff he plays to the fans. Hes a sell out. His entire persona on television is a farce. Similar to agassi in this way.

I remember when he was trying to declare himself ambasador of tennis. Then he quite as davis cup coach which wasnt a bad thing because it shut him up for a while.

A few years ago he and Navratilova were preaching at the US Open about universal health care.

McEnroe is a politician. Always has been and always will be. What he says for the cameras and what he believes are two very different things. If he believes making comments like this are going to make him more popular then thats what he does.

He has an amazing game. Too bad he is such an ignorant and selfish twit.

What planet have you lived on?

JMac is as much a ass kisser as Bod(z)o is a clown and Simon Reed sucks at prediction.

Just b/c you disagree with him doesn't mean he's "an ass" kisser. I can understand you're against his opinion b/c Nole's run was at the expense of your boy(rafa).

Verdasco could probably beat Chang. Chang was lucky because he could beat other players that were in weak era, so his height wasn't an issue.

You underate how mental this game is at the top. Chang beat plenty of big hitters in his day ...agassi, courier, lendl, Krajicek etc. etc.

Verdasco is a chump compared to a great player like Chang. I suggest you study Changs career.

Could Chang push Nadal to 5 sets?

Chang also never played fair. Remember when he stood inside the service box against Lendl? Almost cheating.

Chang was very mentally tough. If Fiasco showed up, Chang would win. The top players could beat Chang if they played their best tennis, but if they were struggling or not playing well, Chang would win because he never beat himself.

How about a straight set beatdown from Novak to the mass cheater.

It would be fun to see and good for the game but.....the minute you count Rafa out he comes back and guts you. That is his entire career in a nutshell.

I think Rafa will not mind going into the french with less preasure this year.
