Dumb question about polys

I'm very sorry about this dumb question that I have but oh well...

Do polys offer a significant difference in power and spin compared to synthetics and multis? The only strings that I play and like are the Gosen OG Sheep Micro 17 and the Klip Venom 17. I would like to get a little more pop on my topspin so is it true that polys help with this?

Thanks to those that answer my question. I'm kinda old school and just starting to explore the poly craze.

For this discussion, I am assuming Luxilon is a poly.

It is less powerful. What I observe when playing is more spin, less power, and exceptional control.

The increase in spin that I see may be because of the loss of power, but no loss of spin for any given shot. I don't really know how it all breaks down, but it seems to be lower powered. This goes for ALU Power and Luxilon Original.

People will argue that strings don't effect spin and you don't get more from Luxilon, but I would argue against them. I think you're crazy if you can't get more spin with a poly.

some polys are more powerful then others. Alu power, actually is rated to have better power then other polys and multi's etc. You could also try stringing a few pounds lower, which might help, but you would most likely lose some of your topspin. I say check out luxilon, since they are an excellent maker of polys, and try their alu power or alu power rough if you want more spin. Ace is a softer feeling poly, but gives massive spin (18g) as well as timo 18, but I have heard timo loses tension incredibly fast, so I suggest ace as well. If you want something cheaper from luxilon try their monotec zolo which is 3-4 bucks cheaper but it still a good all round poly. Comes in rough or 18 g or 16L.

The only dumb question is the one that's not asked. Hummm, having said that, your question was, indeed, dumb, but because you could have found the answer by searching. Anyway, regarding the power issues between Alu and syn guts, you'll find that there will, forever, be contradicting positions.

Ripper, I could say that your response was dumber than my question because you have built most of your 1,ooo+ posts by telling people to search. Just an FYI, I did search but did not want to take more time to look for an answer to the question I asked when it would just take me a minute to type my post. Thanks for the feedback but keep the "seek and ye shall find" reponses to yourself.

Cheers!!!

Yes, I have a mental disorder called "Mariushancusitis".

Joking aside, this is a serious problem on these forums; people are lazy about reading.

You too, my friend.

I'm glad you didn't take my post too seriously. You see so many guys get offended on here and they forget that this is nothing more than a website for people to post their opinions. Anyway, have a great rest of the week.

Strings like Luxilon create more spin by decreasing string-on-string friction between mains and crosses. This allows the main-strings to be stretched downward by ball-string friction, and then the strings can snap back up as the ball decompresses. The net result is that the main strings remain in rolling contact mode with the strings for a longer period of time.

Luxilon strings, like ALL poly's, are less powerful than most synthetic guts and multi's. However, there are a few multifiliment poly's that make up for some of the power loss. If you read the Luxilon string package, it says to string "at least 10% lower than you normally string". So, stringing it at 10% lower tension will help with the power too.

If you are really into spin, most poly's are an extruded, monofiliment construction. They can be made in about any shape, it just depends on the mold they are extruded through. Luxilon 5-Star is a hexagonal shape (from what I can tell). You can feel the edges, and it was made for spin, even though it is a thick 15L string. Isospeed Pyramid has a triangular cross section. When I string it, I feel like I'm getting paper cuts on my fingers because the 3 edges are so sharp. It's made to really bite the ball.
