Edberg's record in aussie impressive.

I thought that the move to RA in 88' would have stalled the s@v domination
but edberg continued to do very well...5 finals..3 after 88..and reached semis
as well including 1994....wonder whats aspects of RA helped him...high bounce maybe? what's best performance of his in aussie? 93 vs sampras?

Edberg is a very classy player; always impeccable.

The ATP did name the Sportsmanship Award after the right guy.

Prime Edberg vs Federer would be quite a match...

I could care less about the poly in Fed's stick, or his "new and improved" proStaff, Edberg would win. But just for the nay-sayers, Roger can still use his k90 but NO POLY...have to use a full bed of gut.

Fed's passing shots would really have to be clicking if he were to have a good chance. Edberg takes the net soooo fast.

The Edberg first service is a FLAT serve, tossed to a location directly above his head, employing an EBH grip. He gets nice net clearance (also an impressive 1st serve %) and impressive kick off the bounce because of his grip. He saves precious milliseconds using this grip, allowing him to stick first volleys from well inside the service line. The toss location allows him to crush the underbelly of the ball easily.

This grip, along with impressive and consistent knee flex, is what allows the Edberg service to be the impressive weapon it was, a weapon that simply set up his volleys. that comfortably hurdles the net and sinks its teeth into the court, dancing and skipping all over the stringbed of his opponents' racquets. No he didn't ace often, didn't need to. But he could have with a more traditional flat serve. He was certainly as strong or stronger than Sampras, and didn't have to field so many half-volleys as Pete either.

The Edberg first serve is not a kick serve.

The Edberg second serve is.

As I remember, many people, including Sampras, felt that Edberg liked the heat, even though he was from a very cold country (Sweden), and he played very well in such a temperature.

Sampras himself said he did not play that well in Australia because it was too hot, as so many other players of his calibre thought.

Edberg, meanwhile, thrived.

Also, about the Edberg '93 semi against Sampras, I think Sampras was up 5-2 in the 1st set and a break in the 2nd before dropping both.

I don't think Edberg played particularly well in that semi, he was just luck to hold on while the heat got to Pete (get it!).

Yes it is. It was well known. I don't consider Edberg to have a flat serve, not at all. Also, your initial statement makes no sense...contradicts what you stated in bold. You toss the ball directly over your head for a flat serve and an EBH grip??

The guy had a terrific KICK serve on 1st serve as well as 2nd.

Not to take anything away from Lendl, but I really believe Edberg would have won the 1990 AO if he had not had to withdraw because of a pulled stomach muscle. Lendl was up 4-6 7-6 5-2 in the final when Edberg retired, but Edberg was up a set and a break before the injury, after which he really couldn't serve effectively.

And Edberg was a guy who troubled Lendl, actually having a 14-13 career lead in the head-to-head.

Of course, Lendl is no slouch and he could have came back anyway if Edberg had not been injured. But, having watched the beginning of the match, I really think Edberg would have won.

So, his great AO record could have been even better.

Agreed. Edberg was a fantastic player during that time. Lendl began to slide at that point. Between 89-92 Edberg was a beast...I think he made at least 7-8 finals in majors.

I bet the '94 AO semis between Edberg and Todd Martin was a S&V-fest!

6-3, 6-7, 6-7, 6-7

Evert has an odd little record. Never played the Australian Open without getting to the final ( all but one of which was on grass) Mind you that was all of 6 times she entered but it belies her supposed weakness on grass.
